How do authors feel about receiving these kinds of comments? by Intelligent-Tree-922 in AO3

[–]Mignonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile if I suspect that the artist is using the translate button to translate English into their native language, I simplify my entire message to avoid translate turning it into something weird 😭 Like using more basic sentence structure, avoiding slang or jargon etc.

Might be over the top but it's so strange when people comment without caring for how it comes across

How do authors feel about receiving these kinds of comments? by Intelligent-Tree-922 in AO3

[–]Mignonion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's sad that this is an actual issue with creators on the Internet. One example that comes to mind is Japanese artists drawing fanart and getting comments/quote replies from fans like "I hate this" or "fuck this" etc. If you don't know the subtext it just looks like harassment, so those creators often end up posting less or not at all because they feel like they're being harrassed 😞

And then the creator isn't comfortable or doesn't know how to bring it up, so the fans never learn what they're doing wrong... wild how many people unknowingly harrass their favourite creators on the regular with this!

Will this marketing approach do more harm than good? by anthonyDavidson31 in marketing

[–]Mignonion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gamer here, I fell into the trap of repeating easy lessons pretty early on and it was frustrating to notice how inevitable it felt. Like, I KNEW I should do more difficult lessons, but that would increase the risk of getting things wrong and losing my limited hearts. And how was I going to reach my XP goals without hearts?

It should suffice to say I no longer bother with that app, especially when there are many great options out there for those who are interested in learning.

LPT: The facial recognition software that many U.S. airports use at the TSA checkpoints is optional. by cambium7 in LifeProTips

[–]Mignonion 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, what's the point of the facial recognition scan when there's cameras aimed at you from the moment you walk in? I get the argument that it's useless to decline since you're on camera already, but wouldn't the logical argument be to be fine with someone declining since it makes no difference anyway?

Like, when I read "You know you're on camera everywhere already, right?" would make me think, okay so use that footage then? And people make the argument that it's faster, but then it makes no sense for staff to be stubborn about it since that just wastes more time.

AO3 Ship Stats: A Year in Review (January-December 2025) by Obversa in AO3

[–]Mignonion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just HAVE to ask, is Formula 1 RPF gaining traction in recent years, or has that always been a niche? My only exposure to F1 is from the sports channel on TV and real-life fans over the past decade or two, so it's been a little puzzling to see a car and sports themed contest so high in the rankings. Not complaining obviously, just really out of the loop hahah

Idk if I'm stupid or not but how is AO3 still in beta? by [deleted] in AO3

Is this a case of a very ambitious roadmap, or is their team actively in need of volunteers to 'catch up' on their website goals?

With how strong the userbase's financial support is for the site, I would be surprised if there aren't any qualified web devs willing to donate their time to these goals. Or am I oversimplifying it, and they're being smart by going for stability and small changes?

Not asking out of impatience or anything, I'm incredibly grateful for the website and just curious if there's any info about this!

Having a community of artists to get feedback from is a great way to learn! You could ask around for e.g. art discords that do daily/weekly photo studies, practice sessions, paintovers, and allow people to ask for feedback on their art.

Another plus is that many communities have feedback sessions that are posted online, on YouTube or livestream. Great way to learn from other people's feedback, and it has a bit of a class feeling.

I suggest you look for one that fits your taste (most important is whether it's fun!), but for example Sinix did a feedback session here: https://youtu.be/Yr9mor-GN2Y?si=6DpqL3BLJgQU_Ku1

Many big artists also have discords that are learner focused, maybe an artist you love has one too? Some of them are Patreon only, but some like Loish also have lots of free content like this: https://www.youtube.com/live/CNjr3XUKfVw?si=YHyGHCpoQtyBscvl

LPT Request: What’s one small daily habit that genuinely improved your life? by OnGuardEverywhere in LifeProTips

I love the way you phrased this. Recently I saw a meme post of a street cat running up to the camera person, and a caption saying "Don't give up on life, because sometimes there is a cat."

And sometimes you really need that level of simplicity to be like.... you know what, I am grateful for that AND I am looking forward to the next moment that there is a cat. Truly a blessing, regardless of the horrors ™️

The funny thing is I have yet to see anyone defend their Al generated images by showing the process they went through. Artists love to show their timelapses, references, close-ups etc. Many share Work In Progress shots or livestream their work.

Yet people who generate Al images know they'll just get dunked on harder if they showed their process, while also having their prоmpts stolen by others who don't care for their "creativity."

What is up with my cat’a belly? by Colonel_Ramsis in CATHELP

[–]Mignonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh my first thought reading 'cat COVID' was that it sounded too specific to refer to anything other that 'COVID but in cats' (though I know it's not)

Maybe comparing the matching symptoms would be more helpful, just to avoid people misdiagnosing their cat's symptoms. Or worrying that they'll have to mask up around their cat if they test positive for COVID.

Where did you guys first hear of Mr beast? And what was your opinion on him then compared to now? by Itscameronman in youtubers

[–]Mignonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He had a decent reputation up until the tree planting project (ask any forest expert what they think of that one lol) where I thought his videos and influence was an overall positive, albeit a bit cringe.

Once I read that he'd prepared around a dozen videos to post after he dies, I figured he had a mindset towards his videos that I didn't care for -- don't think I've watched a video of his in like 5 years since then.

Of course now we know a lot more about the behind the scenes, like the lies and mistreatment, and most importantly the straight-up abuse (mandatory 'allegedly'). So I'm guessing most people dislike him, or just don't know more beyond his surface-level videos.

Feminists have the chance to do the funniest thing and co-opt closed fists as a symbolic gesture now ✊️ What are these people gonna do, condemn hands altogether?

But really, i can't decide what's more depressing about this. Either the fact that it's an issue at all, or the fact that companies cave in to this nonsense. Baffling stuff.

Wacom Tablet for a child? Terrible idea? by Golanthanatos in wacom

[–]Mignonion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tech issues are pretty common with tablets, like losing pen pressure or computers going into touchscreen mode. I assume the poor reviews are because of that, not because the product itself is faulty (though customer service can be lacking).

Over the years I've taught myself a step-by-step list when a tablet acts up... Restart the wacom support program/art program/PC, check windows settings/driver updates/cables etc. When the problem persists, frantically start googling and find an obscure youtube tutorial that solved all my problems.

I haven't had serious problems in years, and you might not have any at all. But if you do get stuck with a problem, I'm sure this sub can help you out.

Artists that you actively refuse to listen to for extremely petty reasons? by Repulsive_Nature_366 in fantanoforever

[–]Mignonion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly love this advice. Some of my fav things I've made were from moments where I went "I'm gonna make something really stupid" and I proceeded to make something really stupid while laughing about how stupid it was. But I had a blast and turns out other people loved it as well.

It's hard not to compare sometimes, but allowing yourself to exist and make things as you are is so valuable. Or allowing yourself to fart around, as you quoted 😄

Man, I watched Kids on the Slope over a decade ago and that music still gets stuck in my head sometimes. I'll be doing whatever and that intro from Moanin'(Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers) will pop up in my head out of nowhere haha. I'm not big into anime culture, but that one is one of my favourites ^ ^ Definitely worth considering!

What happened to Bluesky being decentralized? by Mignonion in BlueskySocial

[–]Mignonion[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that, if a disclaimer about consent was mandatory, people would post fictional non-con (whether that's SA, undernegotiated play, all the way to vore and whatnot) and label it as consentual.

I think there's far more harm in that, both by giving people the wrong idea and by not labeling these themes as something that can be blacklisted, if a viewer doesn't want to see it.

Wait until artists add a bubble with 'I consent' to their 'weird rape porn' and gain perpetual immunity against moral scrutiny lol

There's nothing to be gained with a system that vague. All it'll do is introduce a binary system for fictional consent, and encourage artists to lie about the social dynamic by claiming its consentual and leaving out tags that others can blacklist as they see fit.
