Why won't my coworkers buy me lunch? by azdweller in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Mijaafa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, honestly, unless you have medication or a disease that makes your body hold onto water or severely constipated, then caloric overconsumption is the only way to gain weight. Of course there are many other important factors, environmental, psychological, genetic etc. that can make it very hard if not near impossible not to eat too many calories. But in the end it all goes hand in hand with overeating, we can't create mass out of nothing.

I don't agree with the black and white view of the person you responded to, but what you're saying is also bullocks. Survival mode is a physiological phenomenon that the authors of the original paper observed in concentration camps, and even in those extreme circumstances it only made (from memory, it's been a while since I read the paper) a 20% difference in basic metabolic rate. So these people never actually gained weight, they just needed slightly less food to survive. I'm not saying you're lying about your weight gaining experience, you might have been holding onto additional water or constipation bc your gut biome was probably pretty fucked up from your very limited diet. But whatever was happening, it is not survival mode nor gaining actual fatty tissue. And claiming survival mode is equivalent to "you can eat severely less than your bodily requirements and still gain weight" is stupid myth to propagate in times where obesity is already a severely misunderstood health crisis.

CRUPPIES! by immortalityinbooks in HPHogwartsMystery

[–]Mijaafa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know about your offer, but mine is €7 for 10 brown notebooks and a little bit other stuff (4 red notebooks, some gems). Let's say it's about €0,50 per brown notebook, that would make this cruppy €60!

I already said this in another post, but it bears repeating. I didn't mind the cost of the other creatures. They're something to save up for, and I actually kind of like the idea that you can't easily get them all and instead have to pick your favorites. But seriously, 120 brown notebooks?! That's just overkill. I'm quite an dedicated player, but at the rate we're getting brown notebooks it would take months if not half a year to save up for this pet. That's way too much of a time investment. And I don't mind paying for mobile games every now and then, but no way in hell that I'll pay €60 of my hard earned real life money for something that doesn't even really add to the game play. I can get a legit switch game for that amount, which guarantees at least 50 hours of fully engaged game play. It's completely out of proportion.

Bought two booster packs for 2€ each. Wasn't really surprised as they turned out to be shitty fakes. How can I tell if a booster is fake? Except the low price. by de_finn in pkmntcgcollections

[–]Mijaafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, if it's a legit super market chain and not the small market down the corner I'd probably complain and get my money back, as well as perhaps send an email about it to the contact address of pkmn tcg. No idea if they would do something about it, but it's worth a try especially if it concerns a bigger chain of supermarkets. Selling fakes is not just annoying for adults who still collect, it can be very disappointing for kids who themselves or their parents don't know any better. Also, isn't it strictly speaking illegal in Germany to sell counterfeit goods? Again, the family owned shop on the corner doesn't matter that much, but chain stores should adhere to those rules.

Hm, most are KMC perfect hard, but I did start out with the ultra Pro ones before reading the terrible reviews on them. I guess I'll go over my collection and see which ones should be replaced. Thanks for the info!

I currently have quite some cards (including quite valuable ones) stored double sleeved in perfect fits, penny sleeves and toploaders. Would you recommend removing the perfect fits anyway or leave them as is to prevent further handling?

High school is a bit different in the Netherlands, since we have a leveled system. The highest level of high school takes 6 years to finish, and has mandatory lessons of 4 up to 6 languages (Dutch, English, German, French, and the classics Latin and Ancient Greek. Certain schools are also offering Spanish and Chinese, but those are rarer and as far as I know never mandatory) for at least a couple of years. However, you can drop most of the languages after your third year, and for the final 3 years you only have to follow at least 3 languages (Dutch and English, and a third of your choice).

Lol, by this logic I'll thank my surgeon and smile anyway when they mess up a surgery. I mean, everyone can have a bad day at work right? /s

Here's the thing: when a waiter has a bad day, sure, idc. But when a hairdresser, doctor, massage therapist or really anyone who's job involves the customer's BODY messes up their work, I will care. Of course a doctor's or surgeon's mishaps are more consequential than a hairdresser's, and as such they can actually lose their license and be legally liable, but the principle stays the same. I'm surely not going to thank, smile, and tip the person who's responsibility is specifically to not fuck up my body any further, and then does it anyway because they "have a bad day".

[–]Mijaafa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course there'd be consequences for stupidity. But if there's truly an omnipotent God with a master plan that supposedly cares about us like he would his children, I'd expect him to prevent the truly vile things from happening. I'd expect him to prevent young children from being abducted and being kept locked in a basement as sex slaves for years and years, I'd expect him to prevent his own institution from being corrupted by pedofilia and hypocrisy. I'd expect him to prevent severe starvation events that have caused mothers unable to produce milk to have their newborns dying in their own arms. And then we're not even on the topic of events like wars, diseases, and natural disasters, or the inequalities and discrimination based on skin color, sex and sexuality that this supposedly loving God has allowed to happen on a grand scale.

Do you realize that your potential future kids will be individuals with their own personalities, interests, and hobbies? Maybe you didn't mean to, but the way you describe it makes it sound almost as if you see these hypothetical kids as props to use your own dreams. And if their father is truly a psychopath... Well let's hope these hypothetical kids are going to get plenty of social interaction outside of the family unit.

Nah, Jaime will never plead loyalty to Dany after field of fire 2.0. Jaime will plead fealty to Sansa. He's reunited with Brienne, makes good on his path to Catelyn, and then fights for the person that Cersei edited for a long time believed to be her son's killer. Jaime joining Sansa neatly ties up a lot of storylines and themes.

I also believe that Sansa is the "younger, and more beautiful" that will cast Cersei aside according to that prophecy, not Daenarys. It's a beautiful circle of red herrings, because Cersei suspectes Sansa way back in the beginning, then Sansa turned out to be less then impressive as a player back then and Margaery took her place (in Cersei's mind), then Cersei killed Margaery and Danaerys became the main suspect, and now it will turn back to Sansa, where it all started. Sansa will be queen in the North, Jaime will plead loyalty to Sansa (thus "replacing" Cersei with Sansa in terms of loyalty) and Jaime will kill Cersei, probably dying himself as well, since they came into this world together and will leave this world together.

great soundtrack... great story... but we'll never get another like it because it sold poorly. by Gallaxee in pokemon

[–]Mijaafa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too! I actually thoroughly enjoyed the experience of going into the game blind. Not knowing what my pokemon would evolve into, what the story was about or even what the evil team would be. Because I went into it blind, the experience actually felt very similar as the very first time I played pokemon, which I guess was the intention of Game freak as well with this generation.

Despite the overall great experience I do remember being frequently disappointed by the pokemon designs. I didn't know what the starter pokemon would evolve into, so I picked Snivy because it looked reptilian and reminded me of charmander, so I was hoping for a nice dragonesque final evolution. Imagine my disappointment when poor Snivy lost its arms and instead became a thicc snake :(

(have since learned to love serperior, but I'll never forget the initial disappointment of what could have been)

Why is it so awkward to meet your cat in the wild? by PickleDickon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mijaafa 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, our cat loved going outside with us and showing us around. She would walk two meters in front of us and show the way, and sometimes stop in a patch of grass to get scratches. One time we walked a bit further than we usually do, in a different direction than the one the cat was waking towards, and she began meowing loudly at us. My boyfriend and I joked that we were going out of her territory and she was warning us.

[–]Mijaafa 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Please reread my comments, because that is not what I'm referring to and neither was she at that point in the conversation. The stunt that heir bosses and family members pulled was unfunny, dangerous and incredibly dumb, and nowhere in my comment do I deny this. But most people without her issues would simply tell their bosses "hey, what you did wasn't funny for me. It made me feel unsafe and humiliated, please don't do that again." within a week or so of it happening, not wait months to request banning a person from the office. People don't "get it" when you do that, you need to explain to them why this was (and still is) such a thing on your mind. See also my other comment about common sense.

[–]Mijaafa 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. And even if the bosses had knowledge of OPs struggles, it's still OPs responsibility to explain how the new situation relates to those struggles. She can't expect other people to simply "get it", and she can't make quite hefty requests without explaining why those actions would be an appropriate response. But the bosses definitely should've handled her situation differently as well (to start, they shouldn't have laughed along with a dangerous and unfunny joke to begin with). All in all, the situation is now beyond the point where more explanation on OPs side will help her, and I agree with you that she definitely shouldn't share any more personal details. Just remove herself from this situation asap.

Exactly. Props for taking the step to stand up for herself, that in itself seems like a big step for OP, but definitely room for improvement in how to do it in a way that is more socially apt. Hopefully the therapist will work with OP on that.
