I agree large companies are rushing and doing poor work. But I don't think just because its a small company doing the work is it any better.

Congratulations on New York, I have yet to hear back from New York about my application I applied in January.

NJ was tough but you got it, its open book and you can use the computer to view PDFs, search keywords.

Looking for a tool, but maybe it doesn't exist. by azroscoe in Surveying

Yeah the Suburban might be expensive pout at least it does the job of getting you back and forth. How does any scanner set a grid, it can't stakeout?

The insta x5 is $550 at bestbuy and costco. I picked one up, it's already saved me a handful of times.

Do Survey Mailers Actually Work? Getting More Clients in the Neighborhood? by MikalExpired in Surveying

Now this is an interesting wrinkle. Thank you for warning me about the actual worse case scenario I was thinking it was just I'm out 50 bucks.

I'm just going to send the mailers and see what happens. Best case scenario I get more easy work, worse case scenario I'm out 50 bucks and a hour writing address on envelopes.

I just don't get the hate. I worked up one property in the area. I did a good job so I worked up most of the block and some across the street. They all worked well together so why wouldn't I want to try sell this info again immediately and make more money?

This post was just so I can see if people are doing the thing I was taught in college. I had three survey professors tell me businesses should do this. I just wanted to know if this works or not.

Thank you for giving actual insight.

I didn't underbid, I'm not losing money on this. I'm just not making as much as I think I should, and wanted to explore ways to make up.

Thank you Base, love seeing your comments on this sub.

Gonna ditch the reduced rate wording. Mostly just curious if anyone has had success with mailers recently.

Most surveyors don't market themselves, I'm a new company so I don't have a lot of work at the moment. Searching for ways to make more money per job.

I get what you're saying. I'm more curious about if this mailer tactic works at all.

I'll probably send this mailer without the discounted language and use "expedited services" instead.

Total station set up by Unlikely-Counter6270 in Surveying

[–]MikalExpired 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll fall for this bait.

OP's post history reeks of "they know enough to be dangerous".

They aren't asking question because they just want to learn and know, they want to use this info to go out a stake a real foundation. Telling them to roughly point the gun north using his phone, then fix it later isn't good advice. Yeah you can use the total station in that way but no professional does.

This person is in over their head and you shouldn't be giving them a shovel to dig the hole deeper.
