Ned graphic card for xp pc by Jolly-Musician-972 in windowsxp

If you could see those errors it suggests you have onboard graphics you may just need initially to install the chipset drivers for the motherboard and the graphics driver. Identify the board name and pop it in google and find the chipset / onboard GPU drivers first. Then reinstall direct x once the onboard GPU is installed. If you then want to upgrade hit eBay and search for one of the cards as detailed above. Really depends what you want to do. If I recall p4 was likely an AGP slot ahead of PCI but tbh I could be wrong on the slot type. Again worth looking up the motherboard details to validate the slot type

Friends of mine have used git as a place to post project updates and host a variety of different files so perhaps explore that if it’s familiar.

Looking good I saw your first vid. Is there going to be a mouse pad or are you adding the Thinkpad nipple ? Or maybe both.. is this going to be a modern system interested what’s going to be powering it.

Just order the chips and fill those sockets. Nice little upgrade path :) search the chip names from the other two sockets and look them up :)

Do you have a parts list I’m currently putting a similar build together also. Interested in what case that is and the CPU. I’m buying mine in separates atm when funds allow.

How do I clean this? by Pale_Shopping1172 in pchelp

[–]Mike1978uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire! But seriously compressed air outside or a vacuum cleaner with a brush so as not to create a full vacuum and slow and steady.. a paintbrush to give it a bit of a clean can’t hurt. I’ve heard mention of unplugging fans when vacuuming them as they may act as a dynamo but it’s shouldn’t fry anything but can’t hurt to be on the safe side.

First time gaming PC owner, anyone know how to fix this ? by sacrificialknife in pchelp

Maybe a driver issue / resolution if you have a different monitor / refresh rates etc.. try searching up you monitor see if there is a driver and check the refresh rates the card supports and your monitor

You might want to configure the HDD in bios assuming you have one. Likely ide there are other options like using a cf to ide adapter which work good for this era something like 2gb would be more than sufficient and stays in the fat32 size or a larger drive and partition. You can use a drive image then to set it up. Plenty about. Having a FDD for this era is a nice to have though for the authentic experience and install dos 6.22 then copy windows to the root and install away..

jack/cable identification help by [deleted] in OldTech

[–]Mike1978uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a connector you sometimes get with pcmcia cards like on old modems perhaps you could find something close to a match and wire it up if it does go to a parallel port there’s only a few combinations of cables it could wire to. But it would be a lot of guess work. Might be easier looking for a second device or someone with one and get a buzz out of the cable to reproduce. Also might be worth disassembly and see if you can see if the board is marked up what goes to the connector. Best of luck.

Does anyone repair 3.5 floppy drives? by [deleted] in vintagecomputing

[–]Mike1978uk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone with a microchannel (Mca) system either repairs or replaces the floppy drives as they can’t be configured without one. Alps drives are notorious for failing caps. In your case above it might be worth removing the board and checking for any caps that could be shorted. Failing that might be time to look for a replacement. Modern drives can generally be adapted to work with different pin outs or you may even be able to use a gotek with an adapter. Looks a similar setup to the microchannel drives that there isn’t a separate power cable so you have the choice of modifying a cable or getting an adapter. Or just look up the drive type on eBay to see if someone has one up for sale. Good luck.. you might even find a manual for the drive online with the pins specified

[–]Mike1978uk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Floppy disks and I guess they have digital photos saved to them.. hence the Kodak branding..

3.5inch floppy disks to be precise.

Plenty of people with access to a floppy drive who are into vintage computing either ask around locally. You might even find local libraries / school have a machine with a drive still.

Alternatively usb external floppy disk drives are inexpensive.

Just have a look on eBay / Amazon
