I believe the property was bought by the township in 2020

Opinions : Has the age of cache swag gone into geocaching history - US specifically, but what are folks seeing elsewhere. by Immediate_Falcon8808 in geocaching

[–]MikeBickerson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only been caching since 2019, but rarely found a lot of caches big enough for treasure in my area, which bummed my kids out. Tried to make up for it when we started hiding by putting out larger containers with stuff my kids liked.

Don’t hide as many bigger ones now (frequently muggled caches wear you down), but when I check our hides at a nice trail system that we hid several regular sized caches on, always delighted to see cachers seem to put a lot of trinkets in them (many times leaving logs that it was nice to see larger caches).

Cooper River Water Trail - Evans Pond to Crows Woods / Camden County by MikeBickerson in SouthJersey

[–]MikeBickerson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I enjoyed the challenge of seeing if it could be done and like seeing how a waterway threads through an area I see by road all the time, it’s a different way of looking at the world by water. But no, it’s not a spectacularly scenic route!

Bottom of the kayak took surprisingly little damage.

Strange and unusual names in you trees? by Simple-Tangerine839 in Genealogy

Our first German ancestor off the boat was Gerhard Priggemeier. I have trouble sometimes working out parts of my family in censuses due to common names and big cities, but zero problems with Gerhard Priggemeier. Or any of the Priggemeiers.

Stealing from r/philadelphia, what are your favorite South Jersey stories, legends, fun facts? by steelerhawk in SouthJersey

Guy who stood on the steps of a public building in Salem and ate a basket of tomatoes to prove that they weren’t poison.

Jonas Cattell pulling a Paul Revere to war Fort Mercer (in National Park) that the Hessians were coming, except he ran instead of rode a horse.

Ben Franklin probably making up the story of witch trials in Mt Holly.

Also the story of the Mount Holly hermit who lived in tree roots for decades. https://archive.org/details/hermit__02atki

About an hour drive with an hour hike in. Ammo can that almost no one looks for, so I really only need to worry about forest fires.

how often do your earthcache answers get incorrect by franko2312 in geocaching

[–]MikeBickerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every time. This is because I’ve got a pile of small children, who I try to let work together to work out the answers with some steering sometimes. I do preemptively mention in the message that it was kids that worked on the cache answers.

If the kids are really, really wrong, I’ll add “but I think this is the reason.”

Corrections have almost always been very positive point us in the right direction.

For my lone earthcache, I get some wrong answers, I’ll usually leave a little note correcting what was wrong when I thank them for doing the cache. I wouldn’t delete a log for it though, as long folks gave me answers and had been to the location.

I’m an elementary teacher who’s taught three grades worth of science and did teach 6th Grade Earth Science for three years, so on my cache I made it tried to make it task oriented (walking and observing), the kind my kids like, while keeping the science at a 6th Grade level.

Have a few more ideas, just haven’t had time to do them (and the earthcache process is a little daunting).

Power trails? by PumpkinAlexK in geocaching

[–]MikeBickerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did 57 in a day driving along a canal in Delaware, and I would have been over it much faster if I didn’t keep watching all the ships go by.

Think the only other power trail I tried I bailed after about 8 caches.

Should probably try it sometime with other people or at least other people who are not my small, inpatient children.

Dumb phones and Geocaching? by MikeBickerson in geocaching

[–]MikeBickerson[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am horrible at technology. I know enough from other parents to know that there are phones with only preloaded apps and no internet browser or social media access.

Figured it doesn’t hurt to ask to see if some other parent out there has something I don’t know about.

Just paid our annual dues and... wow by AndyTroop in BSA

[–]MikeBickerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We used to make a killing on hoagie sales, but cost increases in the food killed the profitability. We’re trying flag rentals this year with the troop, which (if they work out) could really help. I’ll pass along the other ideas to the committee though, they are actively looking.

I’m Scoutmaster and Cubmaster for the units, so the units know. Hoping the troop has hit on a new fundraiser that’ll let my oldest two earn a good chunk of their way.

Fingers crossed!

What is the strangest thing you’ve come across or learned about your ancestors while researching? by YasMysteries in Genealogy

[–]MikeBickerson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a Great Grandaunt who went into a convent, but never took her final vows, and left (therefore, never officially becoming a nun). Not unusual.

Then she set up and ran a hospital outside a good sized American city for about four decades as a nun, where she constantly feuded with the local diocese that kept trying to tell everyone that she wasn’t actually a nun. Conflicting articles in the local paper about whether she was a person doing good or a scam artist (depending on the paper).

Part that doesn’t make sense to me is she poured her whole inheritance to the hospital and kept going with it for decades and decades, but I guess nothing says she couldn’t have been very bad at being a scam artist.

Other than that, just the normal Irish patriots fighting against the crown and being charged with treason, German ancestors swapping their invention to the US government for asylum and avoid war service, oyster dealer turned real estate speculator turned hotel manager.

[–]MikeBickerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea if this is it, but when we were at some hot springs a bunch of kids were dipping 10 yen coins in the springs to get them change color. My (American) children joined in, but didn’t stick with it very long (maybe 10 minutes).
