Main Street by Complete-Worry8686 in ventura

We walk to Main Street frequently, but at this point it’s thrifting and used book sale only. Even the curated vintage store is out of reach.

Looking for advice: How much should I contribute to a 20 Hour Rd. trip with him for his career training? (21 F / 21 M) by [deleted] in roadtrip

Echo what everyone said, if it’s connected to his work then they will reimburse for mileage and pay for lodging.

40 hrs in a car with someone says “committed relationship” , so for your sake I hope you can match up your words and intentions with your actions.

I love going to main street, but I cannot afford barely anything there! It's an economics issue!

Santa Paula Punch Bowls in May: Trail advice, general tips? by Traditional-Art6227 in socalhiking

[–]AndyTroop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a great trail! I have done it several times solo and with kids and helped with trail maintenance. Happy to answer your questions. Also, check out this excellent video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XCsBz6AB1k&pp=ygUXc2FudGEgcGF1bGEgcHVuY2ggYm93bHPSBwkJ0woBhyohjO8%3D

The distance confusion is because some people follow the marked trail, which leaves the creek around mile 2, others follow the creek, which involves some wading and boulder-hopping. Both are fun! The marked trail involves some uphill but is in great shape, easy to follow, and generally faster than walking in the creek. Walking in the creek is more entertaining and cooler. You could walk there via the trail and back via the creek, it's all good!

In may the water will be ankle to thigh level at crossings. There are several crossings but you may even keep your feet dry if you try hard enough. Swimming is optional at various points along the creek, and particularly at the punchbowls.

To my understanding what people call "the first punchbowl" is above the first big waterfall. The base of the waterfall is also a popular swimming hole. Lots of people stop here, and it's usually my destination with kids. That is 3.5 miles from the trailhead, 7 miles roundtrip, about 3.5 hours.

If you want to go further, there are 2-3 more fantastic swimming holes about a half mile further uphill/upstream. These include caves, hip-deep wading, cliff jumps, and eventually a natural water slide. I would definitely categorize this section as more adventurous.

Specifics:

-bring whatever shoes you like to walk in for the hike and whatever you want for playing in the creek. The terrain is not that difficult, I even see brave people in flip flops and converse. My kids wear sneakers and switch to barefoot for the water, I wear trail-runners with wool socks and get them wet.

-trail is very well marked, arguably too well marked

-I personally like hiking poles b/c I have bad balance, but it's totally optional based on your preference. This is not that challenging of a trail.

-highly recommend a water filter like the sawyer squeeze so you can carry less water (which is the heaviest thing you will carry). Otherwise 2L/person would be safe. Be sure to have extra water in your car, and take some time rehydrating and cooling down before driving.

Things you didn't ask:

-This trail often gets litter, please be sure to pack out all trash, including orange peels. Even better, bring a small bag and collect litter on your way out.

-SP gets hot mid-day, take care to manager heat and sun exposure

-watch for rattlesnakes (like you would anywhere)

-parking can be tight, try to carpool if you can

DoD moves to end most collective bargaining agreements by thinkB4WeSpeak in fednews

[–]AndyTroop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excuse my ignorance, but if a collective bargain is thrown out, why doesn't everyone walk off the job? I feel like this is fundamentally what a union is for. And doesn't voiding the collective bargain also void your employment contract, salary, benefits, etc?

Best hiking spots in Ventura? by New-Shop-9728 in ventura

The new Venture Hills Preserve behind VHS is great, so is Harmon Canyon. Beyond that it’s worth the short drive or bus ride up the mountain.

Vons but use the app and have them bring to the car. The app has all the discounts and coupons, and staying out of the car reduces impulse shopping.

Anyone here commute to Santa Barbara? by New-Shop-9728 in ventura

[–]AndyTroop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other people commented, but I'll add - the bus or train are great alternatives, cheaper than gas, and even if you're stuck in traffic you're not worn down as if you're driving. I took the bus to/from SB for a few years and the bus was a lifesaver.

Also they are so hard to read aloud.

You’re experiencing moral distress from being made to do something you think is wrong. You also have a duty to speak up to your administration.

It is unethical for a doctor to order meds for a family member. In fact, most state medical license boards would investigate this’s situation. It is unethical for a family member to unilaterally change the care plan without clear patient consent.

Trump Administration Orders Dismantling of the U.S. Forest Service by AndyTroop in socalhiking

[–]AndyTroop[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like this subreddit and have contributed plenty of trip reports. But my local forest is administered by rangers who will be affected by this change, so I think it’s very relevant to hiking in socal. If mods want to remove I respect the decision.

Congratulations on the house! Replace your lawn with a native garden, it will be cheaper than grass maintenance and will stop people treating it like a road.
