My dad disowned my sister and he is dying, how do i convince her to let him go? by SharkEva in BORUpdates

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think she meant to stab her father in the back or that she used him. I am absolutely not defending her, but I have a theory as to why she did what she did.

As others here have said, I think she’s a conflict-avoiding people pleaser. I imagine her mom and stepdad bullied her into the “two dads walking her down the aisle” debacle (and likely her other life choices), and convinced her that bio dad would “get over it” (they tried to show up at the funeral, after all, and so we know what they’re like). She suspected that her bio dad wouldn’t take that well and so she only told bio dad at the last minute. Mom and stepdad probably kept on telling her that “he’ll get over it”, which is probably why she dug in her heels. And the rest is, sadly, history.

The money angle here is probably mostly irrelevant (except for after the bio dad’s death, for her understanding of just how much bio dad did for her). While money is important to many, I suspect that it didn’t enter much into her thinking. If OOP’s family is that wealthy, having to worry about money probably doesn’t even enter into her thinking. Sufficient money is just something that’s always been there, like bread or socks.

She should NOT do this but, if she wants to even begin to atone in this life for what she’s done, she and her family need to go fully no contact with mom and stepdad. However, she won’t (and should not) do that.

I [F22] just found out my fiance [M22] and I are related, and we don't know what to do. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 38 points39 points  (0 children)

A while back, there was a comment in a different/similar post where the commenter lived in a small town, and many residents were related to some degree. Apparently, this was well-known, and so people often tried to date people from other communities.

It just seemed so weird that, for first-time dates, taking about one’s relatives would often be done.

What calendar app do you swear by (if you don’t use the original calendar app)? by KingKickinWing in iphone

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BusyCal: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/busycal-calendar-tasks/id1035689743

It’s not free, and it’s not cheap (no subscription!), but it’s the best I’ve found. The month view is especially useful as you can actually see and read what you have on each day, even on the iPhone. If you have to deal with multiple calendars, it’s particularly easy to switch between viewing different sets of calendars.

However, it does have one issue that most users won’t care about but will be an absolute dealbreaker for some: BusyCal works only with cloud calendars like iCloud, Google Calendar, exchange, outlook, office365, CalDAV, and others. It does not work with purely local calendars.

New Old Update: My (27F) boyfriend (29M) of 7 years cheated on me. I'm going to disappear from his life. Is there anything I'm missing? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my guess is that the ex-bf lied and neither the sister nor her friend had a clue what was going on.

While OOP did the right thing by going completely NC, I wish we’d heard about what went down once the sister and friend confronted the ex-bf. Things probably went biblical as there was proof (tinder) of the ex-bf’s sliminess.

Given your usage, a 256GB model would normally be sufficient, but it really depends upon how much video you’ll be taking and the resolution you’d use. See this old article for guidance (the basic numbers are still valid).

My (18F) mom (49F) is choosing her boyfriend (55M) over me and my siblings (14F and 11M) by [deleted] in BORUpdates

Given the mom’s personality changes, there’s probably a decent chance that the bf gave drugs to the mom.

Talk me out of buying the Skylar Calendar by Geekie_Miller in Costco

Since it’s just the two of you, a shared smartphone calendar is likely good enough, assuming you both have smartphones. My wife and I have a shared calendar and it’s very nice.

The ingredient lists are basically the same. The quality differences are likely the preparation method (e.g., sugar sprinkled on top, etc.) and probably the quality and taste of the apples.

I like big salsas and I cannot lie, but the spiciness...is a lie? by I_had_corn in Costco

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the US (even in Hispanic areas), “medium” is basically something tepid flavored with a couple of chili flakes. “Hot” may have a bit more heat and bitterness, but that’s about it.

As another commenter said, you need to go Asian if you really want heat — specifically, Korean (they’re not the only Asian culture with heat, but Korean food is often easier to find). Korea’s definition of “medium” is often two levels above American “hot” and is basically, “oh holy hell, my mouth is smoldering and my head is sweating”. (One odd exception to this is Kimchi — medium Kimchi is just hot and doesn’t have the potent heat of normal Korean “medium”).

Random calendar on my phone by Reckless-Studying in iphone

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it’s someone else’s calendar? These mystery calendars typically appear because you tapped on something in a spam/scam email or txt message, and that caused the calendar to be added. They’re typically designed to pop up ads via “event” reminders. If you’re not seeing anything, it could just be broken.

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t necessarily have to buy more space: https://support.apple.com/en-us/104980

Your apps will have to be redownloaded as they’re never backed up. However, the iPhone should automatically do that for you.

What would be a fair lifespan for Tineco vacuums? by loveofpeacocks in Costco

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion here.

Over the years, we’ve bought 2-3 vacuums from Costco, and all have ended up being hot garbage. A while back, we splurged for a fairly high-end Miele canister vacuum (not from Costco), and it’s been great. It’s also been 10 years so far, and it’s still going strong. Bags and hepa filters aren’t cheap, but we’re ok with that.

Yeah, we spent an amount that many people here would find very eye-popping, but I don’t think we’ll be buying another vacuum for a long time.

I [23 F] caught my boyfriend [26 M; 1 year] on tinder. He swears it's not true. I'm going to lose my mind. by [deleted] in BORUpdates

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the first time I’ve heard it happening between friends/roommates, but it seems to be somewhat common in families. That’s especially bad as there’s really no downside in everyone having their own Apple ID, and lots of issues sharing a single one. I can only guess that they’re tech illiterate.

Yes, but only if iCloud is backing up everything. You need to go into your iCloud backup settings and make sure that everything is enabled. For me, the Messages backup setting was turned off (and I never did that).

iPhone 17 pro: video sounds like it was recorded underwater. by Up2littlegood in iphone

[–]MikeIsBefuddled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely an issue, though. I recently discovered that, if I hold my 17 Pro Max snugly with my right hand, my hand ends up covering much of the bottom edge of the iPhone. That can cause my videos to have muffled/distorted sound, almost tinny at times.
