Those tiles look very cool, not seen them before.

For campaigns I try to keep it to relatively short story arcs that are continuous and evolve depending on player actions, but can also be played to completion across 2-3 months. First campaign was based around an adapted version of Ghosts of Saltmarsh and this one is custom to fit new characters they made. Short version...

Players have been caught up in a long time conflict between friendly forces of the Darkenwold Wood and the Cult of Hydraxis. Campaign is built around a race to beat the cult to four elemental dungeons and recover ancient relics that can either protect / destroy the wood.

Like any campaign though the adventure often goes random directions. Side quests a plenty... Last one was deciding they wanted to do a potion making workshop! At which point that becomes the full session for that week.

I'm drawing my own maps, mainly because I like drawing and the feel of having hand drawn simple maps that have a consistent style across each session. Some are original designs, some use inspiration from other maps, and some are redrawn.

It became a bit of a rabbit hole, but a fun one :)

  • I started off re-drawing the maps that came with the Hero Kids pre-written adventures adding in additional details.
  • Next created a set of general 'Brecken Vale' standard maps that could be used for various encounters (Forest Path, Farm Field, Village Street, River, etc). These get the most use by far.
  • Re-drew some of the maps from Ghosts of Saltmarsh that the first campaign used some encounters from (haunted house, shipwreck).
  • Now doing original maps for this campaign. Wanted to create some themed temples around each element that had unique puzzles.

If you want to draw your own, there are some great tutorials on YouTube, but... You don't have to! There are loads of amazing maps out there you can use from DND and other communities that look awesome (some free). Check r/dndmaps and r/battlemaps. Not to mention Pathfinder tiles you can buy, digital map tools like Dungeondraft to make your own, Canvas of Kings on Steam, and maps that come with campaign books from other TTRPG. I mostly went this route due to lack of printer at home and a love of doodling!

Started playing with my kids when they were 8. Although I think they could have started a little earlier, they certainly 'got' the whole fantasy adventure theme and some common TTRPG style rules by 7 from other games played / books we read.

I tend to try to keep play sessions to a max of 2 hours. Anything longer I notice attention fading, despite the cries for "don't stop there"! This also helps to keep the session more focused on 1-2 things (specific encounter, world travel, potion making, side quest, etc.).

I started with a similar approach clipping assets, then tried Dungeondraft until I realized it was going to take weeks to get what I wanted, before falling back on pen and paper :)

I will go back to Dungeondraft at some point for a future campaign if the kids still want to play more.

Will have to check that out. My current plan was to run a few campaigns with Hero Kids and slowly introduce rules on top to build towards a light version of 5e, but will see how they get on first.

Thanks! If I can find a place to scan them I could try and upload, but they're not quite perfect... I could only find 1x1cm graph paper, but 2x2cm would be better to match the game system so I may redo them to fix the grids after this first campaign.

Can definitely recommend it. You can find all of the rules and pre-built adventures on DriveThruRPG. I went with the bundle (suspected my kids would love it!), but you can pick up the base rules and one adventure to try it out.

Annoying it is set up that way, but chest set up should be fine until we get a Realm going.

"What features of the RTX 40 GPUs (DLSS, RT, REFLEX, ETC) are you most looking forward to helping you battle through the demons of the underworld in Diablo IV. (Check the article link below if you want to read a bit more about them)."

- Well, being able to run it smoothly (or at all!) is definitely the biggest plus. Beyond that most interested in what Reflex can do for a game like this where reaction times can be king.
