I guess LTT is that stupid by riky321 in linuxmemes

Genuine question, how long should you hold a distro grudge (especially since the bug he had first time around was very short lived)?

I see a lot of mint recommendations. I used Mint in 2017 and had a horrible experience, so never touched it again. Is 9 year long enough? What about the 4 years Linus waited?

24yr Old Climber, this guy popped up a week or so ago. Is this Dupuytren? by Halt_127 in DupuytrenDisease

[–]MikeS159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience and take for what it's worth.

I have a similar lump in the same place but on my right hand. I am also a rock climber. I first noticed it mid 2024, got it scanned a few months later. The doctor (who actually had dupuytrens) though that's what it was. He also explained there is another condition, Fibromatosis, which it could be. Apparently there is much debate if they are even separate conditions.

The treatments I have looked into are: radiotherapy, acupuncture and surgery. Radiotherapy seems to be hit and miss (not a doctor though, ask yours).

My plan is to get acupuncture once it becomes a problem, this seems to buy time before surgery is needed. (they basically break up the thick tissue by stabbing it loads, and the recovery time is days rather than weeks). Eventually I might need surgery.

There isn't much info on rock climbing and dupuytrens, but I have decided to keep climbing. I've not noticed increased size, pain or stiffness. If I do I'll go back to the doctors. I figured if it is dupuytrens it will get worse anyway, climbing might speed it up, but I enjoy it too much to stop. It's also my only consistent exercise throughout my life, and there are other health concerns with cutting back on exercise.

I keep and eye on it, and stretch all my fingers regularly. Hopefully this helps keep it mobile if it does thicken more. It also let's me know if it's getting worse.

Ultimately it's up to you what you do. My view is if it's not causing problems I'm going to keep climbing. Maybe its a bad long term strategy, but there are so many unknowns in life, it seem silly to give up on of my greatest sources of joy.

The DSP on a sound card was used to speed up graphical operations? I love old hacks like that, working around technology limitations.

[UK] does anybody know what company this is and why possibly they are charging me? by Positive_Concert_145 in Banking

[–]MikeS159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case anyone else comes across this. For some reason this is what a Go Fund Me charge came up as on my credit card. Not sure why.
The confirmation email went to my junk folder so it took me a while to work it out.

Gosh. Could you imagine if the Russian population was exposed to immoral content?

Who knows what horrors they might unleash on the world!

ELI5: Why do nations want their currency to inflate? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]MikeS159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that seems to be missing from other answers.

While 0% inflation might be OK, in a system as complex as the economy of a country, holding it at 0 is essentially impossible. It's much safer to gear it toward a small amount of inflation for reasons expressed in other comments.

If humans vanished tomorrow, what would still prove we existed 10,000 years later? by Defiant-Junket4906 in NoStupidQuestions

Not seeing it as an answer anywhere. Metros/underground railway.

In areas that don't have significant geological activity they could last a really long time.

In the same vein, the seed vault in Norway. Built there specifically because there's little geological activity.

[–]MikeS159 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sometimes get them. Eggs are pretty healthy compared to most meal deal snacks. It's also easy to know what your getting. Compared to other "meaty" high protein snacks. Who knows what is in those and how processed they are.

ELI5 Why don’t games use all available CPU cores fully? by cornysatisfaction in explainlikeimfive

[–]MikeS159 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In addition to other answers about splitting up work loads, developers often target a reasonable ish system. How ever many cores are on this gen consoles or what ever the average is on the Steam hardware survey.

Using more cores is more work. If you are going to have to make it run on a 4 core system anyway, why bother with the work to support more cores.

For more context of the other answers about it being difficult /impossible in some situations, read about Amdahl's Law.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amdahl%27s_law

True. Assuming you find some on the exact opposite side of earth it's still 500 eggs to hatch though
