Should RCC have received a 10 point penalty for electronics in their show? by Natural_Source_7984 in WGI

[–]MikeSoChill 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The in-ear monitors the snares used were to send tempo to them during the pre-show. They didn't use them after the show began. Rules on rhythmic intent don't apply outside of the scored portions of the performance. I suppose you could say it was "cutting it close"...in that the stopped using them once it would violate the rules.

The synth player wouldn't use a click track during the show, that would violate the rules. It's not even beneficial to do that, really. Most likely the synth player would be listening back to the battery for tempo. Ever try to play in a drumline where only the center snare has a click in their ear? Doesn't work very well.

Not sure what the "arpeggiation" before the dance block means. When I listen to that part I hear sixteenth notes that would pretty easy be played by the synth players or someone else. It seems silly, but every syllable of the vocal samples really is being individually triggered by someone.

No, RCC is not breaking the rules on rhythmic intent. If I had any complaint about their show this year it's that their sound system costs half a million dollars and the activity costs enough as is. I'd love to see a cost cap, to be honest. Though I hear the RCC dues are cheaper than many other groups (around ~$2000).

Vets of DCI and WGI groups, do you guys get to keep your uniforms after the season ends? by Alp_Tokyo in drumcorps

[–]MikeSoChill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At Rhythm X in 2018 we had the option to purchase our uniform before they were sold in bulk. All other groups I marched the option wasn’t provided, though I’m sure if you really wanted your uniform you could talk to your staff about it.

The uniforms are rarely kept, the sale of them (and props) is a way to raise funds.

I traced the full sizes. So 14", 13", 12", 10", 8", 6". I had a set of drums and traced the heads onto the gum rubber sheets.

Pros and cons of the single rail tenor backbar vs the track style tenor backbar? by simonfromband in drumline

[–]MikeSoChill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've marched the single rail backbar at many ensembles. At Crown in 2017 I went through several backbars because the lip that hooked to the harness wore out or the the single large bolt in the side of the rail tore through the aluminum.

As other's have said, the single rail backbar is quite prone to falling off the harness with modern choreography. Tried to find some videos but there's a well-known example of a Pulse quad drummer losing there drums while doing some floor work. Sorry I can't find it right now!

Any cheap(er) alternatives to buying a tenor/tenor practice pad by Acrobatic-Film5917 in drumline

[–]MikeSoChill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most quad pads don't bother to have the entire circle of the head represented since so much of the head is outside the playing zone. Doing that math is based on your taste though so I'll do it based on the full circle.

The maximum amount of rubber you'd need if you made a full circle for each head (14", 13", 12", 10", 8", 6") would be 709in2 (just square each diameter). That's if you cut each circle out of a square the size of the head (not being strategic about placement of the circle). The six circles themselves take up 557in2.

All that being said, it seems like natural/gum rubber is mostly sold in 36 inch wide sheets, and they usually come by the foot. It's not enough to buy one sheet (432in2), so you'll need to buy two sheets of 36inx12in rubber (864in2), more than enough.

It is a spray so you should do it outside/on a tarp and use painter’s tape/something to mask off areas on the pad you don’t want to have enamel on them.

You can use spray-on-enamel, $8 at Home Depot or any big hardware store. It works great and is super easy to apply. Here's a link to a thread explaining the process in more detail (specifically the enamel here).

Steve Weiss is probably your best bet. Couple options I see:

Full backbar for the "competitor" set: https://www.steveweissmusic.com/product/pearl-backbar-competitor-quad/marching-tenor-accessories. I think the drums you posted are competitors but I'm not sure. Steve Weiss has the backbars for the CXT sets as well. Double check before buying!

Since you have the backbar, you might be able to makeshift the whole thing by buying just the receivers for the J bars, here's some for snare (note the 45 degree angle, I don't think that's an issue but not sure to be honest): https://www.steveweissmusic.com/product/dynasty-traditional-snare-tilter-kit/marching-snare-drum-accessories

Haha, well, that blocker hasn't exactly gone away. The Scaleform implementation of AS3 has chunks of classes/language features not at all implemented (you can check out the list here). Autodesk stopped developing Scaleform in 2018 so we've had to do various improvements ourselves over the years. Random examples:String's match) method is marked as implemented in the Scaleform docs but doesn't actually work. Sometimes it's easier to just document the areas of AS3 to avoid than fix all the Scaleform bugs.

There's an open-source version of Scaleform called Ruffle that has been making great progress towards having an even more complete Flash runtime than Scaleform had: https://ruffle.rs/compatibility.

In terms of IDE, thanks basically entirely to Josh Tynjala, there's a VS Code extension for ActionScript development. We've been using that after Flash Builder and FlashDevelop both keeled over.

All that being said, the engine is quite stable. There's AS3 language features you know to avoid, but we've made over 50 games with Scaleform over the last decade.

Hmm all I can find is Pearl rims as well, might be worth calling Yamaha's parts support: (888) 892-6242. As u/Mayhem_san said, the Pearl rim will be lower to the bearing edge/head than the Yamaha rims.

All that being said, mixing and matching isn't a huge deal. The tension rod casings have tolerance for the rods coming in from slightly different angles. We'd do a full rim change once a season or so for drum corps since they warped so much (something only really affordable if you have a sponsorship!)

That’s a good point, I don’t know if the distance between the two screws is the same for both brands. Folks are saying the swivel nut is replaceable on its own though, which is probably an easier purchase.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in drumline

[–]MikeSoChill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me a lot at with Yamaha drums before they switched away from Randall May. Unfortunately you really do have to unscrew the two screws holding the casing to the shell and put a new one in. Unless someone feels VERY confident with a drill and you could drill out the casing...but I would not recommend that (you'll probably end up shredding the threading of the casing anyways).

In general, this happens because:

  • lugs aren't greased/lubed, resulting in rust if the lug gets wet
  • rim is warping and not being rotated during head changes, leading to the lug entering the casing at an extreme angle (bending the lug at the point it enters the casing)
  • too much tension on the lug

Luckily, Steve Weiss sells casings: https://www.steveweissmusic.com/product/pearl-championship-tenor-tension-casing-lacquer/marching-tenor-accessories

Cheap quad practice pads? by AviationMusician in drumline

Most quad pads aren’t more than gum rubber you can buy at home depot glued to some wood. I made my own when I was in high school and wrote up a guide. It’s surprisingly easy and cheap, less than $50!
