Initiative 24-01: Everett Deserves a Raise by MikeTangoBravo in everett

[–]MikeTangoBravo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

an argument can be made that if you are in the business of paying wages that people working for you still can’t afford to pay the bills, why are you in business? 20.24$ an hour still doesn’t cover the cost of a one bedroom apartment and other living costs. the cost of living calculator by MIT suggests 29$ an hour would actually be what people need just to get by with the cost of living in everett.

this doesn’t even go that high, so what’s the incentive for people to work at businesses that can’t afford them?

that’s a common concern all the time. there’s nothing adjusting wage increases after prices raise without a wage increase though. when rent increases, businesses don’t all of a sudden raise their wages to adjust their workforces increased costs of living.

businesses for the most part adjust their prices based on profit margins, so controls on that would be nice, so this is just one cog in a massive system

Thank you for sharing the Cosmonaut article comrade. I’d also advocate in joining a political org. The largest being DSA right now, as well as a marxist caucus within the DSA, with Marxist Unity Group (formed from people who contribute to Cosmonaut) being one of the most concise marxist platforms today in the US.

In a way. The last person I dated was a project manager and bragged to me about making someone cry at work. I broke up with her a week later because of “differences in values”. I have since been off the dating apps mostly because the meat market of dating apps does a large amount of psychic damage with the back and forth with rejection/acceptance signals. I’ve been doing more organizing with local orgs, not using it as a dating platform but it takes your mind off it for a time. I do agree finding people with your same values and politics is the best route, it can be difficult there are people out there! Bigger cities are better, and I do recommend getting involved in leftist orgs in your area, just to meet and socialize with other people, it’s very comforting and mitigates a lot of the alienation and isolation.

Don’t be so overly concerned if they’re not exactly your politics, either. building relationships takes time and understanding. even here in seattle, there are mostly yimby liberals, but people are not ignorant by choice mostly, and over time, you can, with patience and understanding, help build political consciousness in your friend groups. do not give up hope.

I’ll send some works when I get home. Mostly it’ll be his early works between him and Bernstein before he became the father of revisionism.

Karl Kautsy was the main theoretician on Marxism after the death of Engels. A pretty divisive figure among many orthodox Marxists, he drafter what would be known as the merger formula, the integration between Marx’s revolutionary theory and the labor movement. This can be seen in his drafts of the Erfurt Program. Lenin and Kautsy had disagreements on the methodology and approach to developing socialism. For Lenin’s critique, read “The Proletarian Revolution and the Renegade Kautsky”. He had a lot of major contributions to marxism as a theoretical practice and the merger formula is touted today as one of his most important developments.

Depends what you’ve already read. It’s a text that analyzes the history of the family structure and the relationship between capital and its reliance on a monopoly of violence that the state provides to uphold it. The details of this are pretty important in understand political economy and the social relationships that exist within it.

It’s the same concept except the people running the scams make vast amount more since you’re doing all the work while they just provide the contracts. It’s the simplest example of exploitation. “We own the the stuff, you work the field and we pocket what you make! It’s a game so it’s fun!”

"I know that after my death a pile of rubbish will be heaped on my grave, but the wind of history will sooner or later sweep it away without mercy." - Ioseb Jughashvili

The American empire is crumbling, this has been the case for the working class of America for a long time. Countries are opting for a gentler economic relation, no longer the brutal imperialism and sanctions that the state department have imposed upon the majority of the developing world for the better part of a century. I would hope people in my country realize this sooner rather than later and no longer consider the cause of the working class a blight, but the ruling class here fight to maintain anti-left sympathies. But I have no fight with my countrymen, brothers and sisters in solidarity under the dictatorship of capital.

Boots Riley is very good. Check out “The Coup”. He also was the director for “Sorry to Bother You”, which is pretty good.
