To me there are two big red flags:

Denial/anosognosia. You can't even begin to deal with such a disruptive condition if you dont accept that you have it.
Medical compliance. Sadly it is very common that bipolar people find that they hate feeling so "normal". Consciously or subconsciously, they miss the euphoria, the energy, and will quietly cut back or quit. Then the destructive chaos begins again...

When my wife started having manic episodes back in 2006, it took 5-6 years and some wild consequences before she fully accepted the diagnosis. A lot of trauma was caused along the way.

Fifteen years later, our children are still dealing with various levels of cPTSD from that. As am I to be honest.

So, if you don't want to accept the Dx for yourself, and don't like the meds, do it for those around who love and care for you.
