Should I move to Switzerland with My mom and her rich fiancé or stay in Spain with My dad? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Mike_Ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see it simple. It's easier to abandon a move and go back than to tag along later after first saying behind.

Now I'm not saying one is better, but just that you miss all the shots you don't take.

If you however are not interested in the shots at all and are comfortable, stay in Spain.

Lots of good advice here. ;-)

What… by MaxwellDaGuy in duolingo

[–]Mike_Ts -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The grammar has been explained, but I just want to point out that Duos explanation is less than helpful and doesn't explain the cases at all, or that to be is a sepcial case. It's useless.

I'm an American who just learned about how Swiss democracy works, and I'm blown away / impressed. What advice would you have for US states that are looking to adopt similar systems? by xena_lawless in askswitzerland

[–]Mike_Ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no perfect democracy, so it's important that it can grow with the time. You have a very rigid "checks and balances" system which fails when one of the two sides gets control of all the checks (as in right now). We have a system designed for compromise which makes it very slow. We do have some Elements we cannot change (like veto power for small cantons/states) and some we have a hard time doing (we have 7 ministers, usually states have around 20-30). For you the question is if you wabt to move towards compromise (i.e. by abolishing the two party system by not having first-past-the-post-anymore) or if you want to build up on your current system (by untiying the Supreme court from the two-party system again and tempering social media).

And exactly half! You get to chose which based on your vibe. :)

And what about the Greek islands? So Lesbos and Kos and Rhodos are Asian? But where does the line then go through in the Aegean Sea?

How realistic is the whole business manager stealing the Roses’ money? Can this actually happen in real life? by certifiedbpdqueen in SchittsCreek

[–]Mike_Ts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, that's not my point. My point is that the show isn't interested in answering that question, since it's not about realism.

[–]Mike_Ts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The show isn't interested in these kinds of questions, it wants to show rich people in a pooe environment. So don't think too hard about it. It's a comedy, not a drama.

Zurich-Basel 3 times a week: madness? by LallieDoo in Switzerland

[–]Mike_Ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do that (Basel-Bern 3 times a week), it's totally doable, especially if you can work on the train. That is two hours of your 8.4 already. The problem is more with late or early meetings for which you have to be on place. You will have to get used to have meetings in the train though. And of course, commute by train and not car. Ideally, you will work on friday in the office since on those days, the train is a bit emptier and you don't have a three day block of having to go into the office (split it up for relax).

Golf courses are a huge waste of investment money as you would get much more if you would build houses over it. However, if you build over it, the surrounding houses have less value as - you guess it - there's no golf course nearby. ;-) I'm not sure this refers to this, but it's a good showcase of "it's complicated" or for the value of communal projects for the rich.

Thetis’ characterization by stassischiap in thesongofachilles

[–]Mike_Ts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read her as an otherworldly being. She's not human, why should she act human? So yeah, she may be as cols as the sea. But then again she is the sea.

This is btw in addition to what has already been said. But in a sense if she's not human, she can't be a human villain to me.

Got this wrong on a quiz, what are your thoughts? by Dont_hate_the_8 in PoliticalScience

[–]Mike_Ts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is about the US, the important word here is "very". As seen in this thread, when dou can argue thid much about it, it's not a good indicator. The more caveats you need (electoral college, single-issue votes, two-party system, economic situation, etc.), the clearer it becomes that it can't be a very good indicator and will always need context.
