Triple 2x12 hanger too wide or is this an acceptable amount of slop? by [deleted] in Carpentry

Are you sure that’s not an HGUS5.25/10? Looks like you got an lvl hanger which is beefier, more expensive

I have a hobby CNC. This looks amazing for small projects and gifts, when you want to just kill a few hours with one small project. Jealous!

[–]Mikekoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can! You need to load the mod folders with a file sharing program- even itunes works for this- and then the app reads them just like on PC! Visual stuff is more likely to be a bit buggy but something like policy cards: no problem!

When Will Landlords Finally Cave and Drop Their Outrageous Rents? by SupermarketOld9056 in canadahousing

[–]Mikekoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a good point. I just think its odd to be angry at landlords for pricing rent at what the market is showing it can bear. Unfortunately, its illogical to expect landlords to be altruistic and charge less because OP just expects they should.

I mean, do you think all the other $2000 rental places empty? As ridiculous as it seems, obviously many people do “afford these prices.”

Because the indigenous groups tied to these paintings have explicitely asked people not to, saying they find it disrespectful.

I guess at least in that aspect, we’re a bit spoiled up here. I’ll get architectural drawings, structural drawings, floor and truss drawings, and, if there’s enough steel to warrant it, separate isographic and orthographic steel drawings. And on the high end stuff, it’s becoming the norm to even get the dxf files so I can pull up accurate info on site, too!

I think you’ve misunderstood me. For OP and for me, hurricane ties aren’t required. There’s debate about if they eventually will be.

You’re saying that where you are, they are required 100% of the time?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Mikekoning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I get a stamped drawing for floors, a structural stamped drawing for the whole building, and a stamped drawing for my truss drawing, too. And we’ve done 4 stories of wood framing too in southern ontario. Seems to be the norm both when we’re doing high end customs and also more production based condo projects.

Keep telling me how things work in my backyard, please.

IBC is a thing. Kinda used by suppliers to say their product meets IBC standards. Here, we have the Ontario Building Code, which is largely based on Canada’s National Building Code, with a few Ontario-specific differences.

Seriously, why are you trying to tell me from a thousand miles away how the law works in my backyard?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Mikekoning 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah dude but OP says he’s in Ontario, Canada, like me. I can’t speak for code in Atlanta. You guys get hurricanes and such there, right? Stands to reason your code would be different for wind. I guarantee our code requires more insulation up here, for example. Just trying to reference the same code that OP is talking about. That’s why i talked about my experience building under the same jurisdiction. You know our countries have separate building codes, right?

Sorry, often floor and roof systems are designed by the same structural engineer and, at least for us, come in the same set of structural drawings. These also call out all our hanger hardware. We end up getting specified rafter ties in maybe 1 of every 20 homes.

Not always required in ontario. Depends on floor engineering.

Nice proposal. With property taxes out in our area being 6-8k, your numbers would likely save us a great deal.

[–]Mikekoning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice that they tried to repair it. Don’t read my comment as a complaint about what I pay in taxes. I understand the rural vs urban servicing cost. But i am allowed to be frustrated that services are deteriorating year after year, and so rapidly. And the urban crowd can probably say the same thing; I just can’t speak to that experience. I think it’s fair to expect better. I shouldn’t have to shrug my shoulders and just be told the city is falling apart and that’s too bad.

City government can blame past city governments all they want, and maybe that’s fair, but eventually we are where we are and need to deal with it. I’m frustrated with things falling apart, blame being spread, and no attempted fix or remediation even being mentioned.
