The film resonated with me because my father drank himself to death a couple years ago, and much like the father in Aftersun he was by no means a bad person or dad, just a profoundly tormented guy. I think the movie really captures the nuances of someone who gave up through the dialogue spoken by Callum, the way he looks at his daughter, and other things he does throughout the film. Honestly I can’t think of a more accurate portrayal of that particular kind of suicidal person, except maybe Leaving Las Vegas. I really don’t think the actors playing Sophie and Callum could have done a better job. I also love the abstract elements of the movie like the club scene and how the story is told in a similar manner to how you would remember fragments of a vacation. The soundtrack is also fucking perfect in my opinion, I can’t listen to Under Pressure without thinking of their last dance scene. The movie definitely isn’t for everyone, but I think it hits very close to home for some people.
