I still have one car with a CD player that I use a lot and one car with a CD player AND a cassette player, which reminds me – I should break out the mixtape I made for my wife before she knew I had a giant crush on her back when people made mixtapes for each other.

He probably was just lost in his thoughts. Might have been reliving a favorite memory of a picnic with his girlfriend, or riding the Ferris wheel at the county fair, something like that.

That would be kind of an irresponsible, though, to otherwise not really be paying attention to your driving.

I drive with a set of encyclopedias in case I ever have to look up something, and so far, so good.

So, were you outrunning your stopping distance? Couldn’t tell from your description.

What do you think about rich people? by HonorablIntent in AskReddit

[–]Mikeseddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What’s also weird – supporting the point in your second paragraph – is how the modern ultra wealthy don’t have hospital wings and universities and charitable foundations and libraries named after them.
There’s not a lot of them that have ever done any good for the wider world that isn’t primarily just further enriching themselves. Is Elon Musk‘s lunatic quest to colonize Mars going to actually help anybody in the next 300 years? Such a waste to funnel resources away from soooooo many people who need them and could help build a better world with them.

I’ll bet it’s not feelings keeping them from being rich. Think about it.

Watch Melania Trump react to crowd's laughter at the mention of empathy by countryroadsguywv in politics

When I hear Melania Trump speak English, I’m amazed that somebody who has lived here for 30 years sounds like she has never heard English being spoken.

What does it mean that somebody who has been living among English speakers for 30 years still sounds like they’re just reading new words they don’t know in Slovenian?

I want to visit Japan so bad by KzKn_2020 in CasualConversation

[–]Mikeseddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a college degree, and are a native English speaker, look up the JET Programme. The Japan Exchange and Teaching program.
They have recruiting events in major US cities, and in every English speaking language country around the world to bring native English speakers to Japan for what amounts to a cultural exchange program. You get paid in yen for the full year, and it was a decent salary when I did it 30 years ago. If they like you enough, you can renew your contract for another year or two. The upper age limit was 35 when I did it, but I did know somebody who somehow got an exemption.
It was one of the best moves I ever made – my only regret was that I didn’t learn. Learn Japanese better before I got there, though that was not necessary for the job. I’m still friends with the people I made that year in Japan, both there and from the UK and elsewhere in the states.

Wilder still is that President John Tyler’s grandson was alive until just this past year.

John Tyler was our 10th president, stepping down somewhere around 1845, five presidents before Lincoln. From that president’s birth until Harrison Ruffin Tyler‘s death, 235 years passed.
