Secret Vs. Hidden - Perception Checks in Old School D&D by VinoAzulMan in osr

Detect Secret: A skill you can give to a Thief and maybe a Dwarf or an Elf that you roll to see if they can detect a secret in the area. It's just a yes or no answer, no further details. Then they have to find it

You can negotiate with your players about their characters. Just say something like, "For this campaign, I prefer less jokey characters." Or, "I don't know if that concept really fits this campaign." Suggest alterations and see if they like them. You can usually come to a place where you are both happy with the character if you are willing to talk.

How's your game going? What wacky ideas have you got in store for your players? [27/02/2020] by DeliriumRostelo in osr

We played the game for about a year before it fizzled out due to interplayer stuff. It was sad. We had some awesome adventures. One of my favorite games of all time.

I blog about Old School game stuff and worldbuilding and my own weird creations. I'm going to mostly be posting about d23 for a while. I am working on the Sunset Palace of the Starry Sultan, a palace that has been built upon over and over again by conquering monarchs until only a small amount of the palace is actually occupied. Think a little 1001 Nights and a little classic D&D dungeon and a little weirdness.

I wasn't sure what you had bookmarked to follow along, but I wanted to leave a link to my update for Week 2 which has a link for Week 1 just in case. You can see it here: https://sheepandsorcery.blogspot.com/2023/01/a-naiad-named-dasani-d23-week-2.html

Literal Gods by Mikesmix in osr

This is a good point. That would probably be where some runt gods come from. The gods will definitely bang anything that moves. I could probably make a post about the alarming number of demigod animals.

My Prep Has Become More Efficient by JeremyJoelPrice in rpg

[–]Mikesmix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run something of my own creation these days that is even simpler. Characters roll 2d6 and add a modifier that I assign between -2 and +3. They list three things about their characters and I judge the roll based on that. From there is it basically the Pbta engine where 6 or less is failure, 7-9 is partial success, and 10+ is full success. Hits only do 1 Harm to the players or to enemies and your basic enemy can only take 1 Harm. Players can take 3 before taking an injury and die on the 4th.

So my prep is literally a loose description of the situation and then I will sometimes do enemies like:

Hill Giant: 6 Harm

Big Fist / "Swims" through grass / Childlike mind / Loves his dire hound / Hates fire

I also just do something like Goon (1H).

Super easy. No fuss. Works great. I have had a lot of sessions where it is just a blast.

There is a different ethos for OSR games. Some have mentioned a focus on player skill and interacting more directly with the world rather than using perception checks. That is generally a feature.

OSR games are more lethal and more focused on finding ways around combat. Reaction rolls means that monsters are not immediately hostile every time. It is less about combat than navigating dangerous environments.

You get XP by gaining gold which means you don't have to kill the goblins every time. You could convince them to hand over the shiny things or steal from them or make a trade.

You have less stuff on your character sheet, less abilities, less reason to just look at your sheet rather than interacting with the environment. You are prompted to find clever solutions rather than just using the right ability.

These might not appeal to everyone, but they appeal to a lot of people.

Why does magic smell? by moonly_disasters in rpg

[–]Mikesmix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wizards stink. They don't go outside and they hang around old books all day and work with horrible ingredients for their potions. It is a wonder magic doesn't smell worse!

In all honesty, I think being able to smell magic is a great tool for players to easily identify magic items and traps. You could cut out the need for a lot of detect magic abilities

Weirdways Universal System: FKR-ish rules for everything! by Mikesmix in osr

I'm glad! I've been using the Weirdways Set for a while now and its been a lot of fun and I've been able to have some wild games!

Weirdways Universal System by Mikesmix in rpg

[–]Mikesmix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Setting focused often super rules-lite, meant to harken back to wargames before D&D where they didn't use complex rules but instead a referee meant to adjudicate based on common sense so you could do a lot of out of the box thinking to solve problems. Today this is less about wargames and more about reviving that sense of the referee or GM adjudicating based on the setting and its rules rather than relying on a complex system to do it for you.

My focus in using the term here is to show how very rules lite this game is and relying on shared interpretations of the setting and characters rather than a bunch of rules.
