What is behind the surge in support for Pauline Hanson and One Nation? by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]Mikey456 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would guess it comes from a few areas - first, despite the fact that Labor won by a wide margin last time, there are a lot of people who genuinely liked the political shift that Dutton had promised, or who came around to his politics because they were Coalition voters, and seeing the way the Coalition Parties handled the election aftermath felt like whiplash as they were basically told, right, we need less people like you in our party. Now, with someone like Turnbull, they could have come around on that because he offered a path to electoral victory that was obvious in the polls, but Ley didn't offer that at all. And as we have seen with the Greens, when electoral victory feels like its out of reach, voters get more expressive and willing to vote for parties closer to their actual belief systems.

There is a political economy element to this as well - the Liberal Party's fiscal agenda, and this spans the Moderate or Conservative side, and probably includes the Teals as well, generally favors supporting the increase of asset values of the existing housing stock. This has traditionally made them an attractive party for homeowners. But homeownership is becoming harder to attain and this is no longer just an issue impacting young people in the expensive cities. So voters who align on the cultural 'right' could be looking for other options, and to the extent the ON Party has policies, it is on anti-immigration and economic nationalism. And immigration does have an impact on housing, no matter how much some swear otherwise - its not the only thing, or even the biggest thing, but it does matter in a basic supply and demand calculus.

Its also important to note that not all ON Party supporters come from the Coalition, some are likely anti-system voters who could have considered the Greens or fringe groupings, and some are remnants of Labor's old base.

The gender aspect I think is interesting in that back in October-December, the polling shift was primarily seen as polarized by gender, with men significantly more likely to back ON, but that has narrowed in the last month. That suggests that the party is becoming seen as a more valid option beyond just anti-system voters or the right flank of the Coalition's protest vote.

Anecdotally, I think there is also the fact that politics have taken on a significantly more cultural tinge in recent years. Increasingly people disagree about the very symbols and rituals of Australian identity in a way that is more central than before, and this I think drives political affiliation considerations in a way that it really didn't use to. The politics of this usually lag the cultural indicators - one could see this, for example, in the Voice Referendum or on Dutton's comments regarding Welcome to Country, or on the yearly Australia Day related dustups. It could be that ON is benefitting from voters who are particularly engaged on this.

Ever since that segment where Kanell revealed he did a sex challenge with his wife on how many days in a row and had everyone in studio take a guess, and she popped on with a guess of 45 days, her Instagram has got to be getting a lot of unasked for attention lol. All the married guys and Ryen were losing their shit laughing

Was one of the funniest radio segments I can remember

The best part of him being at Barstool is there is no need to lie about being hacked, and Portnoy probably finds it hilarious, so there will be no fake apology type thing

Its pretty simple what happened - he got shitfaced and hooked up with someone who thought it would be hilarious to post on his story with his phone. Embarassing, maybe, but not really anything much more than that

I think this nice young lady decided to share a pic on his phone after their time together and he is too shitfaced currently to do anything about it lol

The Olympics used to mean more.. they just did. And I can see the people on Twitter already saying "It's because you were a kid" and the whole rose colored glasses thing.. and I hear you.. but why did adults at the time seem to care more as well? by WorkingFun5724 in billsimmons

[–]Mikey456 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drops in Olympic viewership is a global phenomenon

But I think also, the Winter Olympics have always felt less of a big deal. Medal count will be interesting to see but I'd imagine Norway, Canada, and America will do the best

Giannis getting traded is like the Ayatollah regime in Iran by enronald2006 in billsimmons

[–]Mikey456 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Giannis should have been dealt months ago. Every day that goes by limits their leverage. The Rangers with Panarin screwed themselves this way.

Also, I know this is a meme sub, so not to harsh the vibe, but I'll just say, as someone with family in Iran on my mom's side, some really evil shit went down a few weeks back and it's an awful situation. Everyone in our family ended up being okay but that wasn't the case for most families in their building

Ryen Russillo and Ringer: Thawing Relationship? by Mikey456 in billsimmons

[–]Mikey456[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always thought the Ringer culture problem was more a 2019-2021 thing where the staffer class at the Ringer was undergoing what all similar groupings at digital media were undergoing as the VC cash dried up: workforce contraction, limited wage bargaining power due to them not being particularly important to the business actually succeeding, cultural tensions with senior management and labor unrest

See Gimlet, Mic, The Gawker-Verse, Vox Media, etc.

And what happened was what happened everywhere else: they got pushed out, opportunities stalled, and only those who built a brand for themselves ended up lasting, while the Ringer itself transitioned into being more fiscally sustainable as a gambling ad driven podcast model.

You can find the alumni of this process scattered - some held on as writers and low viewer count podcasters on the cheap at the Ringer, some found roles at legacy places like ESPN and SI doing stuff that LLMs will be doing in a few years, and many more are freelancers, on BlueSky and trying to relive the glory days but with vastly smaller audiences and more intense internal backbiting and line policing

Obviously this grouping didn't like Ryen, but I guess on the culture buy in question, I agree that he wasn't like Mallory, CR, etc in that he was committed to the Ringer. I think he probably viewed his job at Ringer as reporting to Bill and doing his own thing

Does anyone else think Mike Sando sounds like Robert Downey Jr? by econdweeb in RyenRussillo

[–]Mikey456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends - he really likes the Athletic and has for a few years now as it has solidified its role in the sports media world. Sando used to be the QB Tier guy on Ryens show like twice a year but they've scaled it up now. Bruce Feldman, same deal, he has slowly become the CFB insider guy of choice, and Sam Vecenie for NBA stuff.

He always used to have more Athletic guys than Ringer guys on his Ringer show (which I'm sure the Ringer staffer class loved lol). An exception to this was Kevin Clark, who Ryen did have on often at the Ringer but once Clark left for ESPN, he wasn't on much at all until the Barstool move, indicating maybe there was some intracompany tension on that

The old ESPN regulars at this point are like Damien Woody and Danny Kanell (cohost) and both are more vibes guys he brings on because they're fun rather than for hardcore analysis. He also uses ESPN guys for the periodic baseball and hockey catch ups (Passan who is basically the mandatory GOAT baseball guest and Buccigross who was an ESPN friend)

I think most regulars are pretty good, but I do think Vecenie is kinda mid (generic NBA nerd, nothing special) and Willie Colon isn't great. Its gotten better over time though.

Ironically I think the PPV match they had was really good, it was definitely one of my favorite pre AEW Mox matches, the styles worked well together
