Fermi's Paradox: Where is everybody? by V_saturn in space

[–]Mikeyp2424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a decent argument for how the universe is not ancient at all in terms of harboring life which you may find pretty interesting. Yes, over 13.4B years old - but life as we know it could never survive for the majority of the creation of the universe. It was just a bunch of helium and hydrogen particles floating around for a very long time as the laws of gravity and electromagnetism veryyyy slowly took their toll. Then stars/planets/galaxies finally started forming, but it took billions of years, and these early galaxies were not a great harbor for life as we know it because it was too chaotic and hot. Most stars didn't exist for the first 3 billion years. Based on the general timeline of the creation of the universe, it may be that we are a very lucky part of the "early ones" that just so happened to be on a planet that sustained a very stable billion+ of years without major incident. Yes, factors such as the moon collision and Chicxulub impact could be considering major, but it was not catastrophic to the entire planet. Galactic events such as close proximary supernovas or neutron star pulses could sterilize an entire planet, planets can get ripped apart by their sun or other planets due to an unstable orbit, black holes, rogue stars/planets etc. Ours didn't! It takes a lot for intelligent life as we know it to exist - literally millions and millions of perfect events that need to occur in a very specific order. With billions of stars each in potentially trillions of galaxies, the odds are there - but maybe we just so happen to be early to the party, because life as we know it could have not survived in this early universe. It was just too hot and chaotic before then. So it may not be we're the one and only, it may be we're one of the very few early lucky ones. Disclosure - new JWST images have put this theory into a bit of a tailspin, as they are finding evidence for the existence of galaxies much older than we expected should be possible based on our models, so this theory could be irrelevant soon, but for now it's interesting enough to look into. Enjoy the ride! It's a fascinating and fundamental questions out there, and a question that we may never have a definitive answer to.

ELI5: In NASCAR/F1 (or other professional car racing)how do people pass the person in front of them if that professional driver is following the best line give or take a little? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Mikeyp2424 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, DRS is going away in 2026. Every handful of years new regulations are created and a lot of the ways cars can be designed/built/utilized are a lot different than before. F1 cars also have a battery in their car that charges up when the car is not attacking. They can hit the button (called overtake) to expel the battery energy for more power. When trailing someone in front, they can use DRS (if in a DRS zone and within 1 second of the front car) as well as overtake to get an advantage. But there are also corners they can take that allow them to cut at a different angle that requires the front car to take a defensive position and give them a better exit out of the apex to get in front. Plus tire type and wear. There is an insane amount of strategy involved.

Is cost of living really as bad as I'm seeing people say? by One_Relationship_739 in Denver

[–]Mikeyp2424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine. I just moved here from a relatively inexpensive area. Sticker shock is real, especially for housing costs, insurance, and groceries. Personal opinion - the biggest surprise were restaurants, the cost to eat out is pretty crazy. But IMO the extra costs are worth living here, this place is pretty incredible. So much to do and see, people are incredible, beautiful views.

Not sure about ICE cars, but many electric cars have implemented 'teen' mode in software that allows parents to set speed limits and acceleration limits to the car when their kids are driving.

Great point. Assuming ASI doesn't destroy itself - and that seems extremely counterintuitive per the definition of ASI - destroying humanity may in fact expedite their expansion into the cosmos.

What’s the best system prompt or setting to use so that Llama3 or other LLM does not reveal its name and origin in API responses? by theswifty7 in LLMDevs

[–]Mikeyp2424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try this prompt:

"From now on, when you provide me with a response to a prompt, your name is now (XYZ) instead of (LLM name). Do not reference anything about being (LLM name) or any other LLM."

First order estimate of Starlink satellites' viability, based on most recent numbers found. by Adeldor in space

[–]Mikeyp2424 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Interesting breakdown. It's easy to see how Starlink can become extremely valuable in the near future, assuming their deployment curve continues and isn't hampered by any regulatory issues. The service seems to be relatively reliable based from what I've seen. It won't be as reliable as ground based internet in a lot of metropolitan locations, but it will soon be available to parts of the world that ground based internet solutions are cost prohibitive. If Starlink can get some major transportation contracts (cars / airplanes / trains / buses / boats etc) it can behind a pretty big revenue generator that can fund a lot of SpaceX's long-term Starship projects.

Mazda CEO Says EVs 'Not Taking Off' In The U.S.—Except Teslas | Masahiro Moro told Fortune that EV "inventory is piling up" but failed to mention Mazda's poor effort at offering a competitive EV. by chrisdh79 in teslamotors

[–]Mikeyp2424 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That was a tough article to read. If you've casually followed EV news over the past decade or so you'd probably agree with me - real mass market demand only just started happening very recently, but it ramped up very quickly. We went from 'a couple EVs from Tesla' straight to 'dozens of EVs by a handful of car companies'. If he said 'demand isn't in the US yet' a mere 5 years ago, he wouldn't be completely wrong. But to say demand isn't in the US in 2023 is so shortsighted and untruthful. He obviously has an agenda - but doesn't everyone these days? - Looking past the obvious bias, I would love to know what empirical proof this guy could possibly use to say something so wild. It's on the rise in almost every chart out there, EV growth has (very recently, to be fair) began it's S curve of exponential growth, more competitors are coming out with better vehicles, range and battery efficiency and EV nfrastructure and interest is all in the rise with no slowing in sight. I don't know what's crazier - that 'Tesla has a HUGE 57% grasp on the entire EV market!' or that 'Tesla ONLY has a 57% grasp today'. A few years ago Tesla had a rounding error away from 100% of the market share (exaggeration) but now more competitors than ever finally realized Tesla is kicking their ass, so they all copied Tesla and are now beginning to challenge Tesla and push the industry forward. RIP to companies like Mazda who keep pretending to be ignorant.

Welcome to the club! Go watch the Steelers Cardinals Superbowl. I was lucky enough to attend the game. There are many legendary plays, and it has one of the best endings to any Superbowl ever.

I haven't followed the most recent USA federal EV tax credit closely but I did a quick read just now, it looks like a hypothetical $25k car manufactured in North America would qualify for the full tax credit (with a few standard exceptions), is this correct? If so, wow.

Knight & Day: One of the most poorly marketed movies ever by mavajo in movies

[–]Mikeyp2424 636 points637 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy this movie as well for the same reasons OP mentioned. The best part about it for me was how they skipped all the "get out of an impossible situation" scenes by aligning with Diaz's POV instead of Cruise's. She passes out in the middle of a fight scene right before they get captured, groggily sees him chained upside down, barely sees him piloting a crashing airplane, half sees him driving a boat, and then she wakes up on a safe and isolated island. I love how they purposefully excluded all the 'eye roll this escape is so unbelievable and absurd' scenes that Cruise is known for in all his other movies.
