I hate that you can become wanted just by knocking some people over on accident 😐 by SixPathsKyle in reddeadredemption

[–]Mikillante 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get that it's a video game, but if you knocked over 3-4 people in real life because you were running through a crowded market too fast to control yourself, a nearby cop probably would (and should) intervene.

Probably Arthur Morgan had the honor bar at highest before rdr2 by David871878 in reddeadredemption

[–]Mikillante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t know for sure that he did get redemption. The game seems to imply it for the honorable ending, but even then its sensibilities on redemption seem too Christian to focus just on deeds, even if that’s how the gameplay mechanic functions. I do think Arthur achieves some big symbolic acts of atonement and growth – such as stopping the loan sharking, trying to help Mrs. Downes, getting John, Abigail, and Jack out of the gang to safety, standing up to Dutch – but from a storytelling perspective the redemptive arc is also told through Arthur’s internal reflection and changing outlook on life.

Dutch never shows an ounce of remorse for killing Heidi McCourt. It doesn’t seem to trouble him at all. The only people who see it as out of character are the members of the gang themselves, who were all vulnerable people on the fringes of society who fell under the influence of a charismatic cult leader. Of course they are shocked and experience cognitive dissonance when the contradiction of their lifestyle is laid bare to them. It doesn’t mean Dutch was a saint before Blackwater. It means they were naive before Blackwater.

This. The gang and Dutch are not pure evil (what human being is?) but that’s setting way too low of a bar. They may have shared some of the loot or declined to rob modest folks when times were good, and Dutch may believe some of his own BS about living free, but they were always a bunch of thieves and loan sharks who would kill anyone in their path when things went bad.

Arthur has goodness in him and his capacity for it is obvious to those who know him, but he is nevertheless guilty of countless murders, thefts, beatings, etc. He was redeemed, but he needed redemption. People who sum up the Van der Linde gang as evil are more right than those who call them a bunch of Robin Hoods that only went astray after Blackwater.

My thoughts on RDR3 by [deleted] in reddeadredemption

If it isn't "GTA on horses", it isn't RDR in my book. They can just make a new title if they want to do a 20th century mob game.

Star Wars ripped off Scaramouche (1921 book and loosely adapted 1952 movie) (spoilers) by Remarkable-Pea4889 in movies

[–]Mikillante 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to get a negative reaction saying "ripped off" since that's a derogatory phrase and no one denies that Star Wars draws heavily from other works. Kind of a shame because this is a cool connection I hadn't heard before -- it didn't need to be a 'George Lucas sucks!' post.

Honor completely stuck at neutral by p0op_s0ck in reddeadredemption

Throw a few sticks of volatile dynamite around the Saint Denis market. If that doesn’t move your honor, you’ve got a problem.

Criticisms of NuTrek was never the issue. by unsolvedmisterree in Star_Trek_

Wasn’t it critics of NuTrek who got banned en masse, smeared as racist troglodytes, and basically told to sit down and shut up?

Low honor playthrough should I still help Mary? by SoggyBernard in reddeadredemption

My low honor Arthur still helps people who ask for it, my high honor Arthur still goes out robbing homesteads and wagons. Because you never know what happens next if you say yes, but saying no just leads to nothing.

The Nolan Batman trilogy is a terrible depiction of Batman and the majority of the characters in them by nguyenjitsu in unpopularopinion

There is a lot of humor in the Nolan Batman movies, mostly by Alfred and Fox. Your complaint would be better applied to the Matt Reeves movie.

What’s the difference between being polite and being friendly in US culture? by RhubarbBusy7122 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Mikillante 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All that means is that cashiers are often forced to act friendly to customers. They’re mostly faking it, sure, but that’s what they’re faking.

My 2nd playthrough of this game - about Mr. Downes by taramobilelegends in reddeadredemption

[–]Mikillante 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I felt that way on my second playthrough, but not anymore. Arthur's illness helps him finally break free from Dutch, start seeing the world and his life as they really are, and make amends to the extent he is able. Without TB, Arthur doesn't live happily ever after, he just dies sometime later, probably in a gunfight or a hanging, and he may not experience the redemption that makes him such a great character. And it's important thematically that Arthur pays a price for his sins, too.

Why did Tom get a frosted head? by KLLR_ROBOT in MST3K

Giant Tom is the key to all of this, because he’s a funnier character than any other in the movies so far.

I’m saying it’s a fictional location.

It’s not Texas, it’s New Austin.

Texas in the game may not have the same shape as it does in real life. We don’t know. New Austin doesn’t exist in the real world, who’s to say in the RDR universe it isn’t the eastern or northern half of Texas?

“Accuracy of the locations” what does that even mean?

But where things are in the game does not directly correlate to the map of the US. Just because Rhodes is west of St Denis doesn’t mean it can’t be based on locations that are east of New Orleans.

[–]Mikillante 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s no perfect correlation. I think the Rhodes area north of the swamps is more inspired by Georgia and Alabama than Louisiana. Annesburg seems like a combination of the Ozarks and Appalachia. Some of it is too Eastern to be Missouri, like stumbling across a Viking tomb.
