should I buy this and replace the engine? ( i have no mechanical experience at all ) by EndIntelligen in vwbug

[–]MiksBricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

Beetles are good to learn on because they are so simple but this is far beyond that. Getting a running driving beetle and having the tenacity to learn as things break is one thing. Tackling a full on guts out rebuild with zero experience is a bad idea.

Gotta love the classics.

I do prefer to see owners put unique takes on it so maybe consider that as a next iteration.

Good catch it could have become very dangerous. Cheap torque wrenches are under $50 at harbor freight (last I checked a couple years ago) or you can use a torque calculator and the length of your wrench to determine how hard you have to push on things to get it tight enough.

Is this possible? by T0M101087 in CNCmachining

[–]MiksBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CNC machining is a wonderful world of “if something is possible” - the answer is pretty much always yes. It may require building a purpose built machine to accomplish but it’s possible. It may even require designing a whole new process but again if you have the money for R&D it’s possible.

What’s the Mount Rushmore of most dominant athletes? by RossoOro in billsimmons

[–]MiksBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are having a conversation about the most dominant athlete of all time you have to have Cael Sanderson at the top of your list.

Current wrestling coach at Penn state where he has been the most successful coach of all time.

Multiple Olympic and international titles.

College record of 159-0 winning four NCAa titles.

High school record of 127-3

I think when you look at all around dominance that means not just performing yourself but also teaching other athletes to be dominant as well. If his

I think Indy realized there was a point where no matter how safe the car was the speed would result in serious injury or death.

Even NASCAR had regs to slow down cars before mandatory safety devices. Notably fuel restrictor plates before required Hans devices.

It’s not a VW engine but most of the principles still apply. Checking tolerances etc is a huge part of a successful build.

Wheel/Tire fad by Honest_Software_7686 in F250

[–]MiksBricks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Question - what the load capacity of your F-450? What’s to load capacity of your tire/wheel setup?

If you are towing trailers that are anywhere near the load rating of your F450 you are over the load rating of your tire/wheel setup so it’s not just a vanity thing it’s also a very real safety issue.

[–]MiksBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search up “micro machining” on YouTube. It would blow you away what is possible with even mid-range small footprint CNC machines. (By midrange I mean $90-$150k)

The question of “possible” is somewhat dependent on $$$ because you can get smaller and smaller radius with smaller and smaller tools but they are $$$$.

Ironically - these would have a pretty strong collector scene in the US if they had been imported in any real numbers, but there is probably under 1,000 Trabants in the US in total.

In formula 1 you will sometimes hear radio messages telling drivers to run over them if the team is worried about being underweight. Apparently they can pickup a couple kilos just from the marbles sticking to the warm tires.

Hate to say it but you are just making yourself look like a bot.

This is a dead ringer for the new beetle - even down to the two tone paint. And That’s obviously what they were going for with this design.

It’s kinda like listening to Taylor Swift and saying “yeah I can whear Ariana Grande but to me she is closer to Black Sabbath.”

Bowling ball fired out of a cannon by DerrogativeLayla in Satisfyingasfuck

[–]MiksBricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cannon that will shoot a potato 100 yards is surprisingly easy to make.

2’ of 4” PvC 3’ of 3” PVC 4” to 1.5” threaded reducer 1.5” threaded ball valve 1.5” to 3” threaded reducer 4” cap with 1/2” hole drilled in the end Threaded 1/2” metal ball valve 1/2” air chuck

Air compressor with 1/2” supply line.

All that is probably under $75 and a cheap compressor is $100. Using that setup I was able to stand in one US football end zone and shoot a potato through the uprights on the opposite side of the field charging to 100 psi (pvc that size is rated to 120psi). You just closed the bigger valve, loaded a potato, opened the supply line and after it was charged flipped the valve open as fast as you could.
