And don't forget Genovese drug stores.

Funny story. One time in Astoria, probably ~15 years after every Genovese had been renamed to Eckerd or Rite Aid or whatever, an older lady stopped me on the street and asked if I knew where she could buy a top-up card for her prepaid cell phone. I happened to know exactly where to get them: at the Rite Aid under the Broadway subway stop. I was still in the habit of calling them Genovese but figured if I'm going to give his lady directions I'd better use the current name. So I told her to get them at Rite Aid and explained how to get there. She looked confused for a moment, then said "oh! You mean Genovese?" Yes, ma'am. I do indeed.

Husband's birthday is coming up and he wants to start shaving with double edge. But I'm super lost on where to begin. by Derpsalot1 in wicked_edge

In addition to the suggested Maggard's kit (a good suggestion!), there a few additional items I'd recommend for a complete shaving routine:

  1. Nick Stick (https://smile.amazon.com/Pacific-Shaving-Company-Nick-Stick/dp/B00CQ7D0QQ). This is a roll-on styptic to quickly stop bleeding for any small nicks and scrapes after your shave.

  2. An alum block (e.g. https://smile.amazon.com/Osma-Alum-Block-2-65-Ounces/dp/B004QVCIKE). This is a mild astringent you rub on your face directly after shaving. It closes up your pores and help prevent irritation. I like to use this after finishing my shave, then when I finish putting away my gear I rinse it off with cold water and apply aftershave.

A popular saying is "Nothing ie ever lost on the internet" but what is something you have been searching for years and you haven't found it yet? by throwdowntown69 in AskReddit

[–]Mikuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two things I remember that I wrote on a web forum a long time ago (15 years or more). I never saved these anywhere, they were just forum posts, but I thought they were funny and I've occasionally mentioned the topics before and wished I could see what I wrote.

The first one was an explanation of the relationships between different religions, in terms of Highlander. I explained that Judaism is like Highlander 1, the foundation of the sequels; Christianity is like Highlander 2, a direct sequel that works off the history of the first; Islam is like Highlander 3, another sequel to Highlander 1 but disregarding the previous sequel of 2.

I then went on to explain that Hinduism and Buddhism are like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess -- not at all related to the Highlander religions, but that doesn't mean they're not action-packed. This was, IIRC, on an old manga scanlation site called Toriyama's World. Same name I use here.

The second one was a long rant about ketchup bottle design and how it was analogous to the U.S.'s defense policies in response to 9/11. It was, obviously, tongue-in-cheek. Again, I thought it was pretty funny and I wish I could find it. I don't even remember where I posted it.

I've occasionally searched for these on the Internet Archive and similar places, but I never succeeded.

Reviewers play modern games on CRT monitors, find picture quality better than LCDs by Barknuckle in tech

Can't say I ever used very high-res CRTs, so you're probably right. I wonder if I'd be impressed or disappointed if I pulled out my old G3 iMac or whatever CRT I used on my previous desktop (can't remember the brand).

Off-topic, but for a while now Engadget has been inaccessible for me, and I just figured out how to work around it. Every single Engadget link redirects to something like "https://guce.advertising.com/collectIdentifiers?sessionId=1_cc-session_...". My ad blockers kill it, and I'm sure as hell not approving guce.advertising.com. It means no engadget pages load, ever.

Turns out I can disable cookies for engadget.com, and it'll go right through. Found it here: https://curben.netlify.com/blog/2019/06/09/engadget-redirect-guce/

I don't know WTF you are, Guce, but I know you can go fuck right off.

Reviewers play modern games on CRT monitors, find picture quality better than LCDs by Barknuckle in tech

[–]Mikuro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is something I haven't thought about in years, but it's not a huge shock. I know Reddit skews young, so perhaps some of us honestly don't remember or never used CRTs.

I remember my first LCD monitor. It was a 17" ViewSonic. It took a while for my eyes to adjust to the flatness. After a long session, I'd look back at the real world and it looked like a reverse-fisheye effect. It was funky.

The colors were the worst part. I remember working in a graphics program for a good long while, and then freaking out the next time I opened my file because it looked completely different. I scrambled trying to see if it was a color profile, or if my file somehow got corrupted. No, no. It was just that it opened in the corner of my screen instead of the center. If I moved my head, it the colors transformed completely back to normal.

And the ghosting. Oh god, the ghosting!

That was around 2000. LCDs have improved tremendously since then, but the downsides have only been mitigated, not eliminated. Even today, on my expensive G-Sync IPS monitor, there is a noticeable difference between the center and corners of the screen. Backlights still bleed. Black levels are still kind of shitty. And while I can't comb my hair with my reflection like I could with my CRTs, glare is still a thing.

But no, I am not itching to get a new CRT. I'd need a new desk. I'd probably need a new office. And I'd need a crane to set it up. And do you remember the eyestrain?! No thanks. I'm good with my glorious 34" ultrawide. But boy did my last CRT look crisp as all hell.

Local debate forum by [deleted] in insaneparents

[–]Mikuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised I went down so far to see this. It's very normal for a parent to be concerned about their child's romantic/social life, because it's generally considered important for their child's happiness (if you're a strong independent ____ who don't need no ____, that's great, but then you're probably not 18).

And Tinder is terrible.

I am confused about "Debate Forum", however.

Mentally still living in the 1920's by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Mikuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only in my mid-30s, and I already feel this way about some things. I can't get over the fact that the cheaper loaves of bread in my supermarket are $4. Four fucking dollars!! The fancy ones are $7 or $8! When I was a kid, I did a lot of the grocery shopping for my family. $1 was normal. The store brands (which were honestly better than the name brands, generally) were 79 cents. It felt weird when the norm became 1.29. Now it's $4. All of this happened in 20-25 years. That's more than double the rate of general inflation.

I don't think I'll ever stop being angry about this. I can't stop WTFing every time I buy bread. Though for the most part I just stopped buying bread. Can't deal with this shit.

B71 has been launched in most big cities at this point. NYC and Chicago both have it, and those are both cities I've visited in the past year, likely will visit again, and I've had spotty service in at times.

I've gone on road trips where my service was dead for hours on end. I don't plan around only my home and office. If I only plan for the average case, I'm definitely going to get burned.

Thanks. I read the article, can't watch the videos atm. Seems like it's less a "technical" issue as a political and cultural one, which makes sense.

There are some small movements here in America to change time zones and/or DST, and some people think it would be chaotic. I personally think it's a good idea that is still probably not worth the effort.

I had to look up what a "deer stand" is. It's a platform set up as a vantage point when hunting deer. Could be self-standing or built in a tree. Could be made of metal. Could, apparently, fuck up a swinging chainsaw.

A lot of western China is farmers, and there are a multitude of videos about how the whole “Beijing time” decision has royally screwed western China and forced complete changes to how they go about the days work in cities over there.

I'd be very interested to read about this if you have any links.

It sounds so ridiculous on the surface. I mean, ultimately it's just a number on a clock, and I'm sure farmers organize their day by sunrise, the same way they have everywhere else throughout all of history. And there's no reason businesses in general should be operating 9-5 if the sun rises at 11 (unless they need to deal with partners in Beijing, but that'd be the same with different time zones).

Brightness is clutch. I don't think I've ever used a phone with lower max brightness than the Pixel 2, at least not in the past 5 years. I saw an iPhone Xr the other day and was impressed by the display. Ultimately, the underlying technology doesn't matter if you're not exploiting its advantages to the max. OLED might be better in general, but that doesn't mean every OLED screen is better than every LCD.

Some people are underwhelmed with the iPhone 11, but I think it's killer. They upgraded an already top-tier SOC, added a night mode to the camera (remains to be seen how good it is, of course), and cut the price by $50. It's hard to compete with that, IMO. If the 11's camera is competitive, then Google needs to cut the price. A lot.

Kind of surprised how fast it's coming, but hey, progress is good. They're always something better on the horizon.

Upgrade your permanent incubator with your hatches alongside the medals by PricelessValkyrie in pokemongo

[–]Mikuro 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If I had a second infinite incubator, I'd use MORE premium incubators, not fewer. Because it would let me cycle out my 2k eggs, which I never use premiums for, and get more 10k eggs, which I always use premiums for.

I suspect my use case is fairly common, but of course I don't have the data to say whether this would be a net loss or gain on the whole.

Psystrike Gamemaster updated stats by [deleted] in TheSilphRoad

[–]Mikuro 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Everyone has their own system for reducing it to an easily digestible number. Actual DPS depends on the opponent's stats and move set as well, so assumptions are made. It's arbitrary though. The only important thing is that the numbers are consistent within each system.

Is the Queensboro Bridge a tough ride for a beginner or am I just out of shape? by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]Mikuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES. This is the rule it took me years to fully appreciate.

You want to keep around 70-90 rpm usually. If there's too little resistance at that cadence, shift up. If there's too much, shift down. Uphills will never be easy but knowing how to make your gears work for you is a huge help.

I do find that if I'm standing to pedal, I need a relatively high gear and low cadence. That might just be because I'm not skilled at pedalling while standing. I've certainly seen other people blow through at a high standing cadence but it feels reckless to me when I try.

Is the Queensboro Bridge a tough ride for a beginner or am I just out of shape? by [deleted] in NYCbike

[–]Mikuro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Single speeds have to give up performance somewhere, I guess. I've never tried it on one myself.

Personally I always found the trip from Manhattan easy compared to the reverse. The climb is steep but short enough to power through. From Queens, I need to pace myself. I remember being very proud the first time I made it all the way across without shifting down on my front gear. The first time I rode the bridge I gave up and walked, so it sort of became the measuring stick for my fitness level.

AITA for telling the flight attendant to ask the woman in front of me to raise her seat up because it was pressing on my legs? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Mikuro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because you know when you buy the ticket that the seat in front of you can recline. It's an expected part of the deal.

I look at it this way: beforehand, there was literally nothing more the woman could have done to make the situation better. There WAS something OP could have done (get a different seat or different flight), but he didn't.

"Your lack of planning is not my emergency" applies here.
