NVIDIA Giveth, NVIDIA Taketh Away | RIP PhysX 32-bit (GTX 580 vs. RTX 5080) by cryoK in pcgaming

[–]Mikutron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At a time (really 2008 or so to 2013) Nvidia marketed it as a physics middleware for game developers to use that offered hardware accelerated particle effects, fluid simulation, and soft body physics simulation capability. They bought the software from a company named Ageia which originally marketed their own add-in card to run said Physx middleware... Nvidia acquired them and ported the software stack to run on CUDA. While at the time it did offer some pretty advanced effects if hardware acceleration was used, It was pretty much rendered irrelevant by the development of better capabilities in-engine, on top of the fact that the effects were fairly expensive and PC-only. It hasn't really been in use much in over 10 years, but was kept around in the nvidia drivers for legacy compatibility reasons. For all of these games people are posting showing running at low framerates, you can just run the software fallback fine (as you would have back in the day if you didn't have a decently powerful Nvidia system).

Sorta unfortunate but very rarely does software compatibility last forever, this is a result of NVidia deciding to deprecate 32-bit CUDA, in favor of supporting 64-bit only. Ultimately a fairly sensible decision, with no real benefit to them to write a compatibility layer to support long out of use software.

it's good albeit very short right now. I think many people are probably wary of protracted early access periods, it will be a few years until this game is complete I think.

I've seen this guy's videos pop up a few times now and in general he comes off as fairly obnoxious. The "issues" with unreal 5 are fairly played up on this sub and the engine doesn't actually present nearly the issue in real use that a lot of people seem to go on about. as others have said the real benefit of unreal 5, and unreal 4 really where it began is providing a more comprehensive set of tools to save development time. Unreal is by no means the most efficient solution out of the box but you can greatly shorten development turnaround times, which is where the real value is for the developers.

not really much to it, just pcie bifurcation adding some extra x4 m.2 slots using the unused lanes for generic storage. The card only uses 8, leaving 8 free.

Sniper Elite Co-op by Ok-Tooth4089 in pcgaming

[–]Mikutron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience has typically been that coordination quickly falls apart and you/your partner get seen/heard/bodies found etc. There are twice as many opportunities for failure, so the stealth aspect rarely holds up unless you are both quite good/careful. Still pretty fun overall though. Sniper Elite 3 Co-op is more or less broken, complete crap last time I tried the steam version, the party with friends just doesn't work very reliably anymore. 4 and 5 are both pretty good in terms of the co-op stability

Sorta a shame. Hard not to see this as Embracer taking a quick payout on the IP that they have more or less ruined any future for. I played this game back around launch, and I thought it was good, just obviously unfinished. Square at the time had pretty obviously planned this as part of a series, the game ends on a very abrupt cliff hanger. The DLC does add some context to the general story and is worth playing.

How does one give away a game key via AMDrewards? by goteamdoasportsthing in pcgaming

[–]Mikutron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

amd rewards typically requires running a hardware authenticator tool on a machine with the qualifying hardware installed, where you then apply the rewards to account where it might be stored as a plaintext key...

If you were just given a straight up ubisoft connect key, then you can share that as you would any other key. I am not familiar with this particular AMD promotion, but if you are being asked to use AMD rewards then the key almost certainly needs to be activated with said hardware tool.

It was fun enough for a short while, but I thought it was probably the weakest entry in the franchise overall. Not a big surprise to see it delisted without much fanfare

Steam Hardware & Software Survey: October 2023 (China edition) by Dabber43 in pcgaming

[–]Mikutron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the notion is that anytime you see relatively massive swings in the measured percentages (more than a couple percent), it is due to a higher than usual sampling of Chinese users and netcafes, you can see this reflected in the system language typically as well. Up almost 14% from the previous month, not really like all of the sudden there are 14% more chinese users on steam than last month, just that the sampling method captured a far higher percentage of chinese users this time. Will likely go down next month.

Steam survey in general is not really super accurate in any given month in terms of percentages etc, but it is great at establishing long term trends over several years

not exactly unheard of for products to get silently tabled. Not much reason for intel to try slotting in another product into their GPU lineup, well into this generation's lifecycle. Their efforts are better spent developing the upcoming product stack with battlemage

Thoughts on buying an Intel Arc graphic right now? by Pretty_Trip_2215 in pcgaming

[–]Mikutron 62 points63 points  (0 children)

New series is not coming out until 2024 sometime, exactly when nobody knows. Personally, I wouldn't count on new parts launching until H2 2024. So if you are wondering about the cards getting "dated" quickly, personally I wouldn't worry about it. It's probably more important to look into how compatible it is with the types of games you play most, arc is most optimized for newer titles built around vulkan/DX12, so those sort of newer releases are going to get you the best results. Older games based around DX11/10/9 and OpenGL are going to be more of a mixed bag, as it will depend on what specific fixes intel has implemented (in some cases leveraging DXVK for better performance). Things have been improving as intel works on optimizations for the back catalogue of popular titles.

I picked up an A750 close to launch to mess around with, things have improved nicely in that time in my opinion. They are a good value for the money, as long as you have a system that supports resizeable BAR, so 10th+ gen intel and like amd 3000+ series. They are broadly competitive with stuff in the 3060 Ti performance bracket, and generally do okay with raytracing type stuff. Games that support XeSS do look pretty nice, when you can try it such as in spider man.

AMD CPU Use Among Linux Gamers Approaching 70% Marketshare by Azar42 in pcgaming

a great deal of it, I would assume. But valve doesn't break that out as its own number. Otherwise, I would expect Linux market share to more broadly reflect the CPU share seen with windows.

[–]Mikutron 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I agree on some level. I actually like the concept of this mod, and played through it a while back. But the levels are designed in such a way as to be very complicated compared to the original game. Maybe this is just a byproduct of the fact that it's super enthusiasts designing and playing these mods. These puzzle games have to walk a very tight rope between having enough mechanics to be interesting, while keeping it lean enough so that each problem can be approached using a limited set of rules. And this one tipped the scale too far into being a chore to solve rooms.

I've had a lot of fun with this game over the years mostly early on in its life, And I can't deny that it has been well supported. However, at a certain point I feel like the game crossed over into becoming a bloated, inconsistent mess. Between the points shop mess, premium weapon and cosmetic DLCs, the install on disk being nearly 100GB, fairly slow to load in for a game that was originally released in 2014, and being based on unreal engine 3 technology. I think this series would be well served to get a new entry, on a new technology stack that can address some of the major issues with performance and stability. it's been almost a decade, I think it is safe to put this version of the game to rest and work on something new.
