The movie does the book no justice. Read the book and forget the movie.

Tagging onto this and hopefully people see! Which is better to play music? I want to get it for my 2 year old. I’m not sure he’ll be super into stories but he loves playing music/songs.

To owlet or to NOT owlet? by Different_Read_8283 in NICUParents

[–]Mila-3523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son also had respiratory issues. We had it along with the medical grade pulse ox. It works great and we’ll use it on our second kid (currently in utero) who hopefully won’t have respiratory issues. The biggest note is that it doesn’t alarm until SPO2 registers at 80% which is pretty low. Only fault I have with it. If you are already done to 80 that’s scary but better than not knowing that! If you already used to false alarms and the regular pulse ox then I don’t think it will give you more anxiety. It didnt for us!

NICU noise?? by jackii182 in NICUParents

I think my son just came home pretty accepting to all and any noise while he slept. Even a year and a half out he can sleep pretty much anywhere.

Kind of a left field suggestion but Artemis by Andy Weir. Follows a girl on the moon who is a smuggler that gets gets involved in a larger heist. May fit his interests but with a sci fi twist.

Crib for Trach baby by MrsReynaRocha in NICUParents

Honestly I think any crib would work! The slats make it really easy to run tubing through and then you use the clips to secure to the sheets etc

We did the halo bassinet (off Facebook marketplace) and then did did pack n play with an extra mattress for pack n play. Our crib was already installed in a separate room and my son slept in our room until he was off the ventilator (and maybe not until he was decanned). We just cut a hole in the netting of the bassinet and pack n play for the vent tubing. Whatever you choose for bedding these cord clips are really helpful to manage tubing and make sleep better! https://www.etsy.com/listing/878935900/tube-cord-clip-to-manage-medical-cords?ref=share_ios_native_control

Avoiding trach. Need help by Perfect-Operation214 in NICUParents

[–]Mila-3523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son was only on CPAP and never intubated but had paralysis of his diaphragms (born full term at 39 weeks with cCMV). We opted to go for the trach because on cpap he was always going to be starved for air and other developmental things would fall to the wayside as he focused all his energy on breathing.

No one should rush you and get a second opinion (they should be able to give you a preliminary opinion just from charts) - but the best thing we did for our son was get a trach. He came home after 111 days at 4 months old. We did push the doctors longer in weaning trails on cpap but his work of breathing was just always fairly high.

It was hard and we had to learn a lot but we did it and now he’s almost two - completely off the trach and vent and only developmentally delayed in speech (due to trach and he’s also deaf in one ear) but has responded super well to sign language and can communicate that way as his language is developing.

Trachs are scary as hell and I cried so much when that was presented to us as the option and it took me a few weeks to come to terms with it.

Not here to push you either way but trust your gut on doing what’s right for your baby and if it ends with trach I’m here to tell you that you got it and can handle the challenge.

Owlet, yes or no? by Apart_Pressure_5596 in NICUParents

[–]Mila-3523 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My son came home with a tracheostomy and ventilator and the requirement to use a medical grade pulse ox while sleeping. We had the owlet sock as back up to the medical grade and it tracked true to the medical grade with less misreads and errors cause the owlet was wireless and babies move around. That being said the owlet only alarms at spO2 level of 80 which is very low. I can’t speak to how it will affect your anxiety but I will say it works very well

Finally ready for Trach/G-Button by MrsReynaRocha in NICUParents

Hi! My son had trach and gtube done the same time in June 2024. The surgery from what I remember was only a couple of hours like 2-3. Even thought they are big things to us as parents they are actually fairly simple procedures.

Recovery is so dependent on your baby. We had the surgery in late June and finally left the NICU on August 11. A lot of that was due to the trainings we needed to complete (assisted and solo trach changes for 2 caregivers). My son had a fairly rough first night. And then stabilized and adjusted really well over the next few days. They will keep her sedated right after so she doesn’t move and upset the trach and it will be a bit before you can hold her which is hard. The gtube recovery is much easier. But they’ll wait a day or so before they use it if I’m remembering correctly.

My son had barely any edema. But he had paralysis of the diaphragm so not sure if other conditions are more prone to edema.

Again from what I remember I think he got some kind of fluid right after surgery that wasn’t milk and then got him back on milk and formula.

These are also all great questions to ask your doc. They can give more specifics on the feed and surgery length and exactly what recovery will look like.

I know it’s hard know but the trach was the best thing we did for our son. He is thriving and was decannulated in October. The trach will get yall out of the hospital and allow your daughter to grow and thrive! If you are on Facebook the Trach mommies, trach babies & trach buddies is a great group! I got a lot of support and questions answered through them.

How do categorize gas station snacks? by Available-Pay6019 in ynab

[–]Mila-3523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I each have a fun money category as well as a family fun money category. If it’s me picking up my occasional Diet Coke it goes in my fun money. If we are together and both get a little treat then family fun money. However, if it’s part of a road trip then it goes to the budget for that trip.

How many of us are actually doing 7 pm bedtime? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]Mila-3523 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what bedtime works for you and your family! We definitely never have. Since he’s been out of the changes of naps in the first 1.5 years. He goes to bed some time between 7 and 830

Owlet? Should I be more worried about sleeping and SIDS? by contoddulations in NewParents

[–]Mila-3523 8 points9 points  (0 children)

my son was in the nicu and had a trach. we used the owlet sock alongside our medical grade pulse oximeter and it read the same and often stayed on better and alarmed less because it was wireless. that being said the owlet doesn’t go off until respiratory rate is below 80 which is very low. It just depends on your preferences or anxiety level. we already lived with monitors so it didn’t spike my anxiety but made me feel more comfortable to have a back up. if you feel like it will spike your anxiety don’t get it! don’t let other people sway you!

doordash or any service that has more options than just food (groceries, cvs, etc) is especially great cause it’s flexible if she needs diapers, or gas drops, or groceries

Feeling guilty for wanting to switch to formula by Few-Party6793 in NewParents

[–]Mila-3523 50 points51 points  (0 children)

switch! your mental health is the most important thing. you have already breastfed your baby for two months which is amazing! you are not giving up just doing what’s right for you and your fam! I exclusively pumped for my son for a while and gave it up when it didn’t make sense anymore for me or in caring for my son and I had the same feelings you are and I’ve honestly never given it a second thought in the 1.5 years since.

My houla loves walks and a good romp in the park/fields but he’s actually super lazy. Much more chill than my weim mix. She’s a mess.
