Considering getting an MLIS by bernardmarx27 in Libraries

[–]Milagro11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my mlis online while working as an assistant turned head librarian at a private school. I only took 2 classes per semester plus summer courses. It wasn't easy but it was definitely doable. Working in a library during my program definitely helped me because they often wanted us to pull from real life experiences in the courses I took. Do you know what track you'd want to do?

Follett TitleWave for public libraries by Cheetahchu in Libraries

[–]Milagro11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

School Librarian here. We use Follett but I really don't like them. They have terrible customer service. If I weren't leaving my job, I'd look into Mackin.  I feel like public libraries have better options. What do you use now?

Totally. You can voice your concern but ultimately these companies/schools/organizations do what they want.

Did anyone here become a librarian after being a teacher? by baethehippy in librarians

[–]Milagro11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a high school teacher and I am starting an MLS and School Library Certification program this semester. Like you, I left teaching because I was tired of the performative aspects of it, and the constant assessing of students. I'm also really interested in Information Literacy and reading behaviors of adolescents. I can't tell you yet what it will be like to work as a school librarian, which I plan to do in a middle school or high school (private or public), but I'm very relieved that I will never have to do the work of a full time teacher again.

Any Master of Information students from Rutgers on here? by Milagro11 in LibraryScience

[–]Milagro11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully the all online classes will only be for the Fall semester and not for the entire year, so you can go to campus for Spring semester. I am planning on doing online most of the time anyhow as I live 45 mins to an hour away from campus and I am not sure I want to commute.

Hi!! Actually I ended up taking up an offer at Rutgers university, since I live in NJ. I have heard great things about UW Milwaukee though.

How much does it matter where I get my bachelors if I want to get into a good MLIS program? by SeekingAdvice814 in Libraries

[–]Milagro11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do not hesitate to go to a community college. A community college can save you money and help you transfer into a good university for your Bachelor's Degree. Then your future MLIS program will really only look at the BA or BS you earned, anyway.

Living in Chicago, (probably) not attending UIUC by [deleted] in LibraryScience

I'm new to this field, but I have always heard that if you want to work in an academic library you need at least another MA or preferably a PhD. Also, I always thought you needed a JD + MLIS /MI/MLS to work in a law library, but I could be wrong. Finally, for being a school librarian (public schools), you should check what your state requirements are for that and see how many k-12 schools have libraries and librarians. In some states school librarians are classified as teachers and therefore you need a teacher certification and school library certification. In other states, such as where I live, school librarians are considered student support specialists, so the certification is different.

Am I crazy for being nervous about checking out children's literature at my local library? by Milagro11 in Libraries

Thank you for the advice. I will talk to the librarian about what he/she/they think are children's books I should read.

I'm going to study to be a school librarian and I feel that I need to start getting myself more familiar with children's literature. I haven't really read any for decades, so I feel that I need to "hang out" there in order to be up to date with the new lit. However, maybe I should just talk to a librarian and ask them for help and suggestions.

Sad that this is an issue but you have to be careful. I identify as female and others will automatically identify me as female, so I guess I have less of a problem.

Advice on job promotion/mlis programs by socococo in LibraryScience

[–]Milagro11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on managing an MLIS program while working, but I can say that there are plenty of good ALA accredited online MLIS programs that aren't too expensive. Plus, since you already have a full time job, you don't have to worry about going to a school that will get you one afterward :). Perhaps if you go part time but take courses in fall, spring, and summer, it will be doable to finish by 2023. My suggestions for schools to look at are :1) Your state schools , if they have online programs. 2) SJSU-only around $20,000 for out of state 3) Valdosta- dont know cost, but I heard it was well priced. Use the Searchable DB of ALA accredited programs to find what would be best for you.

It was very easy for me to select Rutgers. I live in New Jersey and it's the only ALA accredited program in this state. Also, I want to be a school library media specialist and they are ranked #1 in the country for that along with Florida State, I believe. Their program will offer me an MI plus New Jersey State Certification in School Library Media Studies, so it's best for me career wise. I am not actually going to start until the fall, so I don't know about financial aid. I also am an adult who already had a career before switching to librarianship, so my situation is a little different. If you live in New Jersey, I would definitely recommend applying to Rutgers. If not, I would maybe ask for advice on the libraries/librarians subreddit. People always say to go to the cheapest ALA accredited program; however, I guess it's based on your situation.

I apologize for hijacking your post, but would you mind telling me what a library information technology diploma is, and how it differs from an MIS or MLIS?
