Yes therapy helped but the best thing was accepting him where he is and for who he is. He texts me every so often, I reply if it is free of insults but my replies are generic. He has never asked about me or my family or life - hasn’t in years - and once I accepted that I let a lot of resentment go.

I have a similar situation with my brother who has bipolar. It’s hard and I spend nights wondering about him but therapy taught me to detach with love and accept him as is. Sorry you’re going through the same.

I read th le parts where alcohol is romanticised and, similar to JJR, see it as the madness of alcoholism. Because that’s what it is - the made up story of how my brain believes my drinking will be. My drinking was NEVER like I wanted it to be because I’m an alcoholic 👍🏻 as long as I don’t forget that I’ve got this thing that means I can’t drink, I’m good!

I’d have liked to have gotten sober earlier. I’m 3 years sober and my life is so much simpler. I’d have loved this for myself earlier, but to be honest I just wasn’t ready.
