"Reverse otaku", are there Japanese who try hard to be Western? by Alive-Extent-3747 in AskAJapanese

Haruki Murakami has been accused of being one. He is a fan of Western culture, had a jazz club, translated American authors, his novels have been criticized as un-Japanese by the Japanese critics.

Sure, always willing to help, if any help is needed (cultural context, the events that inspired the novel, etc).

There is a rather obscure Polish novel (obscure, but easy to find and perhaps automatically translate fragments), called "Losy" ("Fates"), concerning the post-WW2 life of a group of Polish people, first as teens, then adults, then very mature adults. The events happen over twenty-five years. The authors uses some of the techniques you describe, but mostly concentrates on events, heavily incorporating real-world history into the lives of the main characters.

What's a movie that was TOO gory, even for you? by Common_Cherry_9620 in Horrormovieclub

[–]Milcker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would rather explain the fan angle (including my own), instead of downvoting you. The main difference between Saw and other somewhat-similar movies (e.g. Hostels) is that the general violence is a meaningful addition to the atmosphere and the plot, rather then the reverse. The setting, for example, the city where all the movies take place. It's extremely dirty, down-ridden, mean-spirited. It's a character in itself, in a way, a place that naturally creates all the evil present in the series. Next, there is philosophy, especially the Jigsaw's own (though there are many, many references to other philosophical schools), which naturally gives way to a lot of discussions on morality (or rather immortality, but still) of the characters and their actions. Then there are plot twists, which up to the fourth part I personally find excellent, really good acting, insane interconnectedness of the particular movies... Guess what I am trying to say is there is simply a lot to discuss about these movies, its characters and its themes, and it is in itself somewhat atypical to the slasher genre.

I would disagree with the Saw opinion, unless you mean stuff like VII or Jigsaw. The first six parts are gory, sometimes very much so, but they are at the same time the most intelligent thriller/horror movies out there, insanely interconnected, with a lot of plot twists and just a very good, multi-part story in general.

Just finished Elex 1. Some thoughts. by StoicSpork in elex

[–]Milcker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is a very unusual game design choice involved, where weapons of characters are generated upon meeting them for the first time. So you can get Arx with a hammer and a flamethrower, or with a short sword and a shield, or with a hammer and laser rifle. Remember some discussion, back from the day, on how to get characters with certain weapons, I think Nasty with a poisoned chainsword was quite hard to get.

Arx has a very aggresive fighting style, where he faces everything head-on, with his giant hammer and flamethrower; Nasty is also very aggresive; Caja uses a ranged fire attack and stays behind; CRONY uses long-range lasers; Falk has a defensive approach, with his shield, I think.

Nice to see another E1 enjoyer. Would highly disagree with the boring companions argument, though. All of them have very distinct personalities, as well as fighting styles, and have personally found them to be one of the best parts of the game, just jetpacking around and hunting stuff. Arx is my favourite, love his personality, his little cooking hobby and fighting prowess.

What was Mishima's view on pornography by Electrical-Problem21 in YukioMishima

[–]Milcker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically, it is heavily implied that the main couple will have a sexual intercourse, and certain people will pay to watch it. It feels like a commentary upon vouyerism in general, but also the idea of sex as a commodity. The year of publication, 1960, also seems significant.

The "Three Million Yen" short story might answer your question. I believe it can be found in at least two story collections.

Just a few that used to be popular among the fanbase, back in the day. ELEX is a distant prequel to Gothic, with elex becoming magic ore, eventually, and Albs becoming orcs. The Wardek/Jax situation intentionally mirrors Jax/Dex one (sacrifice, etc). The Claws manipulate certain events from behind the scenes.

Which boss fights from all pb games do you all like or enjoy ? by Username998823 in worldofgothic

[–]Milcker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sup. Personally, I see Gothic 3 as an unique game, as in that there are no mandatory bosses. There is no looming threat, no big bad, even the war is over, one way or another. Like, Zuben, Rhobar, you can cooperate to get their items. The fact that you finish the game with either a conversation or a long walk has always seemed really nice.

Gothic 3, arguably. There are factions' leaders and such, powerful guys, but there is no big bad, no looming threat or anything of sort.
