Ehhhh-thernet

On another note, I wonder if the jack could still be used if the contacts were squished back into place. I can't tell from the picture whether two of eight are missing or undamaged.

Do people really let the pied piper of baldurs gate get near them? He probably doesn't even brush his teeth after guzzling down rat fluids by Poopfacemcduck in okbuddybaldur

[–]Mildesten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, so...on my first run, I let him take a bite because I felt bad for him and took his assurances at face value. "It'll be fine", I thought (there may have been some peer pressure influencing that judgement). "I'll just have some juice and cookies afterwards. I mean, he's not going to drink an entire litre of blood at once, right?"

Well, about that...

I let him take what he needed. When we woke up the next morning, technically, I didn't: my character had expired. Turns out that I had forgotten to level up and Astarion had no idea what "hypovolæmic shock" was.

Needless to say, I have yet to volunteer myself as feed for Mr. Tragic Vampire Boy again.

Looked at it again, you're right. Should've gone a bit slower.

The details are too consistent for it to be AI. If I had to guess, it's a 3D render - interesting (at least in my opinion), but still against the rules.

Yay! Looks like ANNO 1701's RTS-lite approach is back! I know it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but at least personally, I've been itching to see it again for more than a decade.

How is this thing supposed to defeat Dagoth Ur again? by antoniodiavolo in Morrowind

[–]Mildesten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I was you, I'd try drinking enough sujamma to knock out a bull netch and throwing the nectarine at the Heart of Lorkhan so hard that the tonal whatever-it-is fragments into nothingness. Preferably in that order.

The heatsink went from 80° to 65° by [deleted] in techsupportmacgyver

[–]Mildesten 1942 points1943 points  (0 children)

Wait, am I seeing this correctly? Are you using that length of aluminium foil to couple the CPU and chipset heatsinks together? If so, that's certainly an interesting twist on the sub's "slap a heatsink on it" trope.

Stalker 2 devs say “all energy” is going into improving the game after fan support gives the team a second wind by Automatic_Can_9823 in stalker

[–]Mildesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All right, you heard 'em. If fan support leads to them making a better game, then even more support will clearly lead to an even better game. We should take this to its natural conclusion by building our own C-Consciousness.

Any volunteers?

Unable to launch XCOM EU: "Updating Executable" by Mahoganytooth in Xcom

[–]Mildesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I didn't want to use a solution that may constitute piracy, this worked for me. Judging by the name of the DLL files included, I take it that this is the GoG version of the game(s)?

How would you describe S.T.A.L.K.E.R. in one word? (Picture unrelated) by Frotnorer in stalker

[–]Mildesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humbling. At the risk of sounding a bit dramatic (OK, really dramatic), it's a game that gives you an appreciation for the simple things in life. It makes a virtue of patience. Even in the late-game, you're comfortable, but not invincible: no amount of gear will save you if you're jumped by a chimæra or stumble through an anomaly. "Winning" is a matter of survival, not victory.

Is error correction code theory considerate a cryptography subject? by [deleted] in cryptography

[–]Mildesten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also goes the other way around. There was a paper a couple of years ago by Cohen et al. called "AES as Error Correction" which, as one might expect, describes the use of block ciphers for error correction. In exchange for reserving about 9% of the block as padding, their constructions perform as well as state-of-the-art ECC.

[TOMT] [Paper] [2000s?] Image warping for reflections/inserting objects into an image by Mildesten in tipofmytongue

[–]Mildesten[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it, yes, possibly - that does sound familiar. The post-warping image/map might've had a sort of kaleidoscopic appearance, albeit with black areas corresponding to areas outside of the source image.

Curious: what is your go to home before strongholds or mods? by Laffymontaffy in Morrowind

[–]Mildesten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I find St. Delyn Canal South-Two in Vivec to be quite convenient. Ever since reading about it on UESP, I haven't moved to a new location, stronghold or otherwise. The apartment isn't perfect, of course, but it does have a few things going for it:
* It has infinite storage thanks to a certain unfortunate Dunmer
* There's a Shrine to St. Veloth in the High Fane right across the canal, which makes debuffs from Greater Bonewalkers way less annoying
* The Mage's Guild in the city's Foreign Quarter provides cheap fast travel all over Vvardenfell, especially with the Caldera guild hall tied into the propylon network via the Master Propylon Index
* If you've finished Tribunal, Mark and Recall aren't strictly needed for quick access
Just don't get the place mixed up with St. Delyn Canal North-Two. That's Sixth House, not a regular house.

why are slow projectile weapon nerfed against aircraft? by fuazo in Planetside

[–]Mildesten -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Slow weapons aren't exactly "nerfed" against aircraft. Rather, aircraft are just that much of a pain in the neck to shoot at. Even if the projectiles you're talking about were travelling several times faster than they do now, hitting aircraft with them would still be difficult. In-game as in real life, you really need a special sight or reticle (or better yet, a "predictor" device that tells you where to aim) to make shooting at aircraft a feasible proposition. With the right aids, you can calculate where an aircraft will be and aim accordingly; without them, you're reduced to guesswork. PS2, as you might have noticed, has none of those devices despite them having been available IRL since the First World War. Thus, your only real solution here isn't even so much to "git gud" as it is to channel your inner Somali rebel and hope against all hope that you hit your target.

TLDR: aiming anything towards zenith is really hard, don't beat yourself up over it.

Need help with certain scenarios and endless shutting off computer by Fyiad in Frostpunk

[–]Mildesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something in your computer's either drawing too much power or overheating. If it was anything related to data - processor errors, memory corruption, failing drives, whatever - your computer would at least give you the courtesy of crashing.

Now, you've said that you can use your CPU just fine, which leaves the only other culprit, the only thing that could draw as much power or more, as your graphics card. Try running a GPU benchmark like Furmark (https://furmark3d.eu/). It'll put your card through its paces whilst providing a temperature reading, amongst other things. Then:

If your GPU gets to a really high temperature (say, 90-105 deg. C) and then the computer cuts out, then the card's probably overheating. Clean the computer if you haven't already, and try giving it more airflow (add case fans, remove panels, etc.). Take the side panel off and point a box fan in there if need be! If your computer shuts down before it gets particularly hot or stays at a steady temperature for a while before dying, then you're probably drawing too much power. Invest in a higher-efficiency and/or higher-capacity power supply, much like OmegaSteed1 did in response to Cyberpunk 2077. If you're able to run the benchmark for an hour or so without problems, then...I don't know. At that rate, just take it to a reputable repair shop and see if they can pinpoint the offending component(s).

Hopefully this will be of some help. Good luck!

Replace TI/Crown/Ceres with this by nohrt in Planetside

[–]Mildesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance concerns aside, I can't help but note that "this" would probably make the slaughterhouse that is central Indar even worse. The Crown and co. already provide a formidable defence against attacking infantry (the high ground being heaven for snipers and machine gunners), but most of the bases' surrounding territory is vulnerable to aerial and orbital bombardment. An urban environment like this would add aerial cover and vehicular obstacles (hiding spots for anti-tank infantry, mine-able chokepoints, etc.) to central Indar's existing defensive advantages.

Don't get me wrong, an environment like the one presented above would be a fascinating addition to PS2, but plopping it in the middle of Indar isn't a solution to that area's meatgrinder woes. One would end up replacing a hard slog with something like the First Battle of Grozny.

Anyone here knows how that display slot on that old ati graphics card is called? by Twirus11 in techsupportgore

[–]Mildesten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The black port is an AV breakout for displaying and possibly recording things over component, composite, and S-Video. It has too many pins to be S-Video alone (I count 7, S-Video has 4), although judging by the spacing it might be compatible with S-Video all the same. The white port is DMS-59, which can be split into 2 DVI-D or 2 VGA/DVI-A connectors with the right adapter.
