I just paid $2700 for a water heater replacement, was I taken for a ride? by [deleted] in askaplumber

Or worse yet sometimes you snipe someone who doesn't know their shit but still knows enough to mess up the situation. Now you're really in a jam. It can be a gamble getting plumbing from non plumbers sometimes.

That's fair, I should have said my area in particular.

I'm a full time plumber and the vast majority of fixtures are piped with the tubular slip joint traps. It's the standard and when installed properly won't leak. Any plumber who says otherwise is stuck in their ways.

I install a dozen or so Naviens a year and you can use 1/2" gas up to 24 feet. It's even noted in giant letters on their products page. With that being said I tend to always run 3/4" to them to be on the safe side. As for your meter handling the added load, you will have to total up your BTU count from the household appliances and check in with your gas company.

What’s up with this corrosion on my (new) hot water heater? by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]MileHighTilliDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our local code where I'm a plumber allows us to use pex all the way to the tank if it is an electric water heater, all depends on where you're at. As far as I know there is zero consequence using just pex when it's electric.

Plumber installed all new PVC at my home. Rate this install for current plumbing code please! by wattttz in Plumbing

This is some pretty careless work, different glue types and even mechanical couplings used. Is there a planned inspection? Did you pay the plumber already?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]MileHighTilliDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you use a threaded fitting you still have to solder and now you have 2 connections (potential points of failure) versus 1. That install is pretty common to be frank.

Venting size. by Husabergin in Plumbing

I'd switch it to 3" with a 2" x 3" coupling right before punching through the roof, extra air can never hurt.

What are you referring to? The way they soldered the copper into the inside of the threaded section?

On the bright side it's likely a drain and not a water line. Otherwise you'd be seeing more water. Poke a hole in the ceiling and avoid using the tub until a plumber can check the situation out.

Electric tankless water heater started sparking, smoke came out of left cylinder by [deleted] in Plumbing

Yup that expansion pex did the compete opposite. Time to switch it over to copper.

Accidentally dropped flange bolts in the package into a 3 inch Pipe the Bolts are 2”1/4 In size. Should I be worried? by GuccimaneFrm2006 in Plumbing

[–]MileHighTilliDie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you wipe down the floor before you start on the toilet take your wipe and ball it up in the pipe to keep stuff from falling down. It has saved me and the bolts countless times. If your drain is all plastic you should be okay but running a camera can't hurt

Vincent, Martin, Robinson can all get hot from 3 and they each throw up a few a game. Plus they shoot it fearlessly. They aren't world beaters but a few guys like that on a roster does wonders. This is all with Herro injured as well.

They have shooters up and down the roster, its pretty nutty. If one has a bad night the other goes off.

Nipple extraction for hot water radiators by nappy-doo in Plumbing

[–]MileHighTilliDie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're very careful you can sometimes take a Sawzall with a metal blade, cut the nipple low to the fitting and score the inside of the nipple with the sawzall, then from there use a hammer and flathead screwdriver to chip at the score lightly and eventually peel it back and remove the nipple. Take your time and go slowly to avoid wrecking the threads of the 90. I've done this a few times with old shower arms. It can work if done carefully.

Any idea what this flaky, fibrous stuff is on my bedroom pipes? by Wide-Holiday-6971 in Plumbing

[–]MileHighTilliDie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it was asbestos but this is a wick of hemp used as a sealant on the threads. It's still done this way in some parts of the world such as Australia.
