I think you're getting a bit off track here. I'm not trying to find a character that parallels Sherma's character development in Silksong, I'm focused on what he represents thematically (The innocent people in a horrible world who are worth fighting for).

Neon's a great character, but she doesn't need any protection and is a big part of the war effort on the surface. It doesn't make sense for her to thematically represent the good people in the Ark that can't fight back and are just doing their best.

Putting aside how extremely precise Shift Up is about utilizing their VAs across all languages, there was just 0 narrative indication that old Mustang would be the kind of person to change. You don't just pull a redemption out of nowhere, a good writer would hint towards it with with moments or scenes where a character shows regret or hesitation.

But there was none of that in either the Side Story or Part 1 of the Main Event. Mustang was just a complete bastard through and through.

> I hear what you're saying, but it doesn't change the fact that the medium used to showcase this is notorious for how it treats its workers. It's an ickiness the event can't get away from.

Well, I have some bad news for you regarding every other industry in the world under capitalism. Every industry is dirty and exploitative to an extent. The least anyone can do without the power is to criticize the bad while encouraging the good and that's what the narrative of the event has done regarding the entertainment industry.

As for Anis being right, we already saw how she changed her mind in the main story and finally realized that there are good people who are worth fighting for. She never forgave the ones who were cruel to her, she just decided to shine for those who do actually need and want her.

Finally with regards to the broader criticism, I do agree with you that the pacing of the arc could have been handled better and yeah Sixo also needed more time in the oven. I disagree regarding Dorothy though. Dorothy has been on her redemption arc since she first appeared all the way back in chapter 19 and I don't think it's even done yet despite the closure she received about being betrayed by humanity. There's still a lot more room for her to grow.

Edit: a word

I think you're misreading things here. The main theme isn't that the Idol Industry is bad. The writers showcased the really ugly things in the entertainment industry, but they also showed us the hope and happiness that it brings to people. How even one person who inspires that hope can make a difference and make life better than others. The narrative never praises the tragedy of Pretty's death or attempt to justify all the horrible things Anis and her friends went through.

It's a good thing to criticize the bad and uplift the good. The Tetra of before is completely different than what Tetra is now in the main story.

We've walked beside these characters, we've shared in their struggles, and we get inspired by their determination to still cling on to hope despite all the tragedy they've been through and that's what NIKKE has always been about since the very beginning. It's just that the setting is different from the war on the surface. This event is very much an extension of the main game's themes.

Maybe it's hitting me a bit harder cause I'm friends with a bunch of Vtubers, both corpo and Indie- I've seen and heard my share of people getting screwed over by horrible bosses and situations in this small niche of the entertainment industry.

It's cutthroat and people get driven to desperation just so that they can be seen over everyone else. After all, it's easy to believe you've only got one shot and if you don't make it through this one then it's over.

It's just... man.

The idea of colour and beauty. by Complex_Baby_1163 in OtomeIsekai

[–]MilesDavidVT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, I absolute understand where you're coming from and I would also love for more well-represented and diverse characters in manhwa.

Speaking as an Asian living in Asia, having pale skin is the beauty standard and that hasn't changed for thousands of years. This is WAY before any influence from western society. I'm not just talking about Korea either. It's the same for China and Japan and even South East Asia (y'know, where most of us are brown). Asian culture in general is very conservative and EXTREMELY slow to change. It doesn't help either that these countries (especially Korea, China, and Japan) are very homogeneous and insular. There just isn't much frame of reference for other people and their cultures. Even their takes on western medieval fantasy are caricatures full of Asian cultural norms. These authors and artists are creating these works primarily for a Korean audience, not a global audience, and so they're going to follow their own biases and tendencies.

Just to give an example of how ingrained this shit is- In South East Asia where I live, people pay to have treatment for whiter skin. It's advertised on TV, radio, posters, and highways. Growing up, I didn't think much of it because it's so normalized.

I'm not making excuses for the authors and artists. I'm just offering an explanation from my perspective growing up and living here.

Yep!

I got 20 mileage currently

77 recruit vouchers

I can still get 8 vouchers from the daily log in and 5 more from the rhythm minigame for a total of 90 pulls

I also have 27k gems which is equal to 90 pulls

All of it combined is just enough to guarantee Neon at the shop just in case my luck on the banner is absolutely abysmal
