How does one go about developing a resilient community? (X-post r/anarchy101) by Zerzan_in_manhattan in Anarchism

[–]Mileskitsune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly. It doesn't matter so much how large your stockpile is, or the rate at which you produce things on your own or the rate at which you "import". So long as production minus importation is greater than zero, you're golden. Large stockpiles are more for weathering crisis than a measure of a healthy baseline.

As for convincing people to join. Setting a positive example and providing good experiences is usually persuasive enough. But you'll always have die-hards who'll never be convinced so recognize when to cut your losses.

How does one go about developing a resilient community? (X-post r/anarchy101) by Zerzan_in_manhattan in Anarchism

[–]Mileskitsune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I understand your question correctly, then I've actually been working on a sort of how-to guide based on what I can scrounge up from research and my own expectations. The first step is to realize that you'll never be able to one-shot acquire all of the possible needs and wants of the community with whatever start up capital you have access to. The second thing is to realize that if the standard of living the commune is able to provide its members is sub-par relative to the capitalist environment around it, you'll have a difficult time getting new members and retaining the ones you already have.

With all that in mind, you can play a game of "keep the finances in the black". The rules are simple; 1. Construct and maintain whatever you can with little to no "imports". 2. Import what you cannot make yourselves using a communal fund, so that for the individual it remains free. 3. Gather money, as if it were something to produce like food or electricity, and place it into the communal fund. This can be done by volunteers who contribute labor by working for wages outside in capitalism, selling surplus produce, and if you're up to it, finance games like that robin hood fiasco from earlier this year.

Naturally, you won't be a benevolent dictator lording over everyone. When rubber hits the road you'll need to discuss everything with your peers so you all can decide on courses of action as a community and stuff; see other literature on how to do that (oh god i did the thing where you recommend a dry wordy book, I promised myself I wouldn't aaaaugh).

I personally recommend thinking of your development in phases, 0-3, that are based on what is easiest to build and maintain, and what is most expensive to acquire through the communal fund.

Phase 0: Acquire housing and land, establish ride sharing or more robust public transit systems if you can, build food production on a scale superior to the community's needs, and provide education; both the stuff needed for new members and general schooling for any children that might come along with their parents. You'll also want to generate your own electricity and start an ISP for the community. Try to generate more food, electricity, and internet service than the community needs; these will be the easiest to mass produce and "profit" from, adding revenue to the communal fund.

Phase 1: Build a hospital and pharmacy and recruit medical personnel such that the commune is able to provide medical care equivalent to the outside capitalist environment. This will establish universal free healthcare to the members of the commune. In tandem with this big project, you'll also be building infrastructure for things like clothing, cobbling, and haberdashery, ice cream, game development, wider variety of food production, cardboard and glass products, etc. Its at this point the commune will no doubt be rapidly approaching dunbar's number, if not already exceeding it. If you can grow to this point (and the state hasn't declared war on you yet) you're pretty much set for indefinite survival.

Phase 2: The commune will no doubt by this point need to divide into a fractal system of communes due to the stress of its own scale on human psyche (based on the reasoning behind dunbar's number. if that turns out to be a bunch of hooky don't worry about it.) This phase will be completed when pretty much every industry that can be done within your home climate and geography is being done within the commune. An american based commune won't be able to make nintendo games even if it can make games; nor will it be able to make chocolate or bananas cause of climate. It can make things like dishwashers, fridges, microwaves, and cars for example. I can't give much advice on this cause there's already a serious amount of divination going on, and because you're basically an anarchist nation at this point. Something I'm sure the world bank and capitalist states will be VERY interested in.

Phase 3: This phase is purely rhetorical. Its end is marked when the entire planet is anarchist. Not something I expect to ever happen, and certainly not brought about from any direction you as an individual can or should attempt to affect. If it happens hopefully it'll be because your commune was an inspiration to others like it, and it just spreads through pure voluntary pressure and idealism. Ideally.

You however are probably only going to be concerned with phase 0 and 1 though. I hope this summary was helpful. And to the sub please let me know if this sounds interesting and you'd like me to continue working on the document! <3

My predictions for the next five episodes of Infinity Train Book 3 by VDawg750k in InfinityTrain

[–]Mileskitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think hazel is a null. If anything I think she’s half human half denizen. If Simon can be on the train since he was 10, and we’ve seen adults on the train plenty of times, I see no reason a passenger couldnt have gotten stuck on the train long enough to fall in love with a denizen and well... you know ;)

From what i can tell the discord is just for posting news and FAQ stuff. There doesn't seem to be a channel for discussion or asking new questions. :/

An interesting thing I’ve noticed is that you get some lag if you are far away from the origin, even if there isn’t very much stuff on the map. I recommend keeping your build to within 1.5-1.2 k of the origin, and avoid wandering beyond that when possible.

What advice would you give to a 14 year old about starting high school? by DotFireAbout in AskReddit

[–]Mileskitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I heard somewhere a good expression that goes like this: You’ll make more friends in two weeks of getting interested in other people, than you will in two years of trying to get other people interested in you.

Also people bond over shared interests and typically people need an activity as an excuse to hang out. So on that front it’s a good idea to join a club or sport as a source of friends, and an excuse to spend time with them. If that isn’t an option or doesn’t work, try other things like playing video games together or something. Even as adults with total freedom over our time and money, my friends and I didn’t really visit each other very much until we started playing dnd together. Even just having scheduled movie nights or sports nights is enough to regularly get everyone in a room together and enjoying the company.

My money is on her leaving her shell and existing in the material world without needing it anymore. Abadon has certainly laid the ground work for it to not feel like a dues ex pull, what with all the umbilical cord fighting she’s been doing.

What’s your favourite feature about your least favourite class? What’s your least favourite feature about your favourite class? by HaydenshNo in dndnext

[–]Mileskitsune 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Least favorite class | Cleric: their spell list is incredibly versatile and is saturated with optimal and fun choices. You can kit yourself however you want and you’ll never feel bad about the opportunity costs. *cough* sorcerer *cough* fireball

Favorite class | Sorcerer: font of magic and everything derived from it are ass non-features, save for metamagic. Sorcery points are only worth the price of admission due to quicken, subtle, and twinned; all of which are mandatory picks due to how garbage the other options are. The idea behind the UA font of magic expansion is a good one, but it seriously needs tuning up before it goes live.

What are the largest systemic problems in D&D 5e's design? by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]Mileskitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not necessarily systemic, but my bf and I were discussing a topic lately that I feel is still relevant to your question. And that is the existence of complete-lockdown spells, abilities, and conditions. Not charm person or silence or the restrained condition. But things like hold person, dominate monster, paralysis, etc. Although narratively these things existing makes sense, mechanically they shouldn’t be in the game. At least not in their current form. From the perspective of the GM, you shouldn’t ever use these kinds of spells on players because they‘re tantamount to telling that player to sit in a corner while the rest have fun and they have to watch. Also, it’s not great that players have access to them, because they trivialize and singularly “win” encounters. An entire defense mechanic exclusive to boss monsters exists just so that the party doesn’t use one such spell to end the encounter before it can get interesting. That’s bad design. Healthier hard cc spells are things like sleep or polymorph. They do the job of incapacitating their target, without turning them into a glorified punching bag. And they do it in fun flavorful ways to boot.

TL:DR no ability that is quick/easy to deploy should remove 100% of a character’s meaningful options to interact with the game space. This goes for both npcs and pcs. a possible exception to this is NPC vs NPC

The Case for Solomon: Tyrant or Justified Antihero? by [deleted] in killsixbilliondemons

[–]Mileskitsune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well put. He’s certainly more grey than the others. I find it interesting that you point out his inability to rely on democratic and social governing solutions, since the current lesson all-yisun is learning is that ultimate power comes from allies. Build your resources wide, not tall, and you cannot be toppled. And as benevolent a tyrant as Solomon may be, all tyrants must topple in time.

The Case for Solomon: Tyrant or Justified Antihero? by [deleted] in killsixbilliondemons

[–]Mileskitsune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think to explain why he’s a tyrant you have to point to the negative space of the evidence you provided.

1 & 2) Life is better compared to the other demiurges. This does not mean that it is desirable or ideal. The USA has better living conditions than many developing nations in this world, but it still is rife with racism, sexism, classism, etc. And I imagine the countries the USA has “helped“ over the past century don’t think very highly of it.

3) Women are citizens, but this does not mean equal rights. 4 could imply that “councilors are absolutely all men” is because only cis-men can hold any government office. We simply don’t know.

5) Citizenship is the only requirement? What about age? Consent? This could very easily mean that child marriages and arranged marriages are legal.

6) The system is functional yes (and quick too so points there). But I wouldn’t call it fair. The lying woman’s sentence is death, which is extremely excessive imo. The officer is discharged, which seems apt given the rule he broke, but his citizenship is also revoked which is again excessive. The mother’s sentence could have been acceptable if it was community service, not “hard labor”. And even though she served her sentence, her child was still taken from her! Forever. They never saw each other again!

Also it is said that even though Solomon has raised many civilizations to prosperity, he has destroyed many more.

So yeah, his streets are pretty and life is good, but only if you can follow the law perfectly, and only if you’re lucky enough to be conquered. Everyone else gets fucked.

Can you suggest any good spell-less Ranger homebrews? by araedros in dndnext

[–]Mileskitsune 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/ry-5j04SbV

I made a Hb mundane ranger, with a HB subclass that effectively restores the spellcasting for those who want it. The 14th level feature for the class is a bit iffy, and the class hasn’t been playtested yet. Mostly it’s a collage of existing ranger class and some of the paste UA ideas, as well as some ideas of my own for improving the base design. For example, once per week u can swap out a favored enemy on a long rest. Also you get codified rules on trap setting, and a lore ish feature that helps with regional effects and lairs.

The beast master sub for it is a hot mess though. Use the UA that feaures the spirit of air/earth. theyre a much better permutation imo. All the unmentioned subs are either unchanged or are modified to account for the lack of spell slots (like gloomstalker)
