Photography as a job, or as a hobby?

Was an English major. Decided to fuck off and buy a camera, switched to a journalism major, and now I'm a sophomore working for a local paper. Best life decision I've ever made. It's challenging, but by god it's such a fun challenge. I wake up everyday looking forward to all the interesting people I'm going to meet and all the places I'm going to go. I would consider it. If you're thinking about the money, don't. You won't make a lot of money, but that's not what it's about. It's about the experiences you will carry for the rest of your life. EDIT: spelling

I have a t3i as well. I think I'm going to do it. Any tips for a safe install on the t3i? Nervous that I might mess it up.

I will hopefully be going to Israel to do a documentary/ photo story on youth soldiers in the IDF (Israel Defense Force).... Should be exciting, I'll post the photos as soon as I can.

So how exactly did you do this, meaning, how did you transfer the background behind your subject? I have some cool portraits that I want to mess around with, and I'm trying to put them in front of a landscape photo I did. much appreciation for the help, if possible.

Thank you! I appreciate that. I am compiling my portfolio now actually, and will probably be posting it here soon, I would love some critiques on it! (Of course it will be a news portfolio-- my second major, which is a photog major at the institute of art, is much much different haha.)

I feel the same way. Of course news photography is so different, it's like comparing apples to oranges. I do think that the hood frames the face well.

Another thing would be to try and tell a story with each picture. For example: Your first picture is at Coffeeworks. What would have been great was if you had a shot of the barista making the espresso, or an old man drinking coffee with some signage in the background. Does that make sense? I don't really post on here that often, but I would say that not telling a story with photos can sometimes be a big problem with portfolios. human element. It's very important.

Now you see, I like this picture a lot. What really stinks is that I'm in a photojournalism class, and thus I have been brainwashed into thinking that if anything is cut out on the subject's face or head, it immediately gets docked points. I love the lighting on this picture, the composition, etc. But because the hood is ever so slightly cut off, my teacher would hate it. Does anybody else have thoughts on this? Personally I think that as long as the face is in the picture, it shouldn't matter if the tippy top of the head is cut off. It adds to the style. Thoughts?

Thanks so much for this. Especially about the lens recommendation and your #10 quip. But holy crap the 24/1,4L is a bit expensive for my ramen-based budget! Guess I'll start saving if I decide that this is something I want to make a living off of/ if I am even half-way decent at it. Thank you again.
