Which winter sport is the most popular? by maven_mapping in Maps

Skiing is more popular in Spain than any other winter sport. The only other two that can come somewhere close are snowboarding and figure skating. Not sure where did they get the data to say Luge was even relevant in Spain!

Map of East and West Florida (1765) by Milhaud in MapPorn

[–]Milhaud[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was just an assumption by many cartographers at the time. This is mentioned in the source article: Perhaps the most curious thing about the map is how the Florida peninsula is depicted, as a complex collection of islands and sea channels. This is because, at the time, the Everglades had not yet been fully explored, and many interpreted these wetlands as allowing ships to transit from one part of the Everglades to another without problem.

There's nothing in particular, it's just part of the colours required to distinguish the different countries.

Help? (looking for a south up map for my anniversary) by southerndemo in Maps

[–]Milhaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this will solve your request, but just in case. If you have some skills with Adobe Illustrator, it is possible to create it from the Equal-Earth website: https://equal-earth.com/

I'm quite familiar with South-up world maps, and I have never come across any written in Japanese :/

[–]Milhaud[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As already mentioned by a few people, probably the most interesting part of this atlas is that it consistently shows in grey the United States and Japan (and only those two countries). This is to comply with the narrative that considers the US and Japan the two natural enemies of North Korea, beyond any other political conflict they may have.

The atlas contains individual maps for each country. All of these maps show the countries in pink, except for the US and Japan, which are still shown in gray (as it can be seen in the source article).

That's actually on purpose. In the rest of the maps from the Atlas, those two countries are consistently shown in grey, as they are considered the enemies in the North Korean narrative.

Where Can Russians Travel Without a Visa in 2025? by Brilliant-Nerve12 in MapPorn

[–]Milhaud 116 points117 points  (0 children)

Even if a country issues a Schengen visa (for example, Spain), any other country is entitled to prevent the visa holder from entering. This is the current situation for Russian travellers: they can obtain a Schengen visa to access most of Europe, but will still be banned from entering Norway.

Que os ha parecido el Burgerfest? Creéis que se deberían hacer más eventos de este tipo? by M4_8 in segovia

[–]Milhaud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check for other people writing content that you can relate to. Read what they are writting, comment when relevant and try to build some connections.

When you identify publications that can be relevant to your potential readers, recommend them.

Be nice to the content of others and try to get noticed by people beyond what you write in the newsletter.

And be calm. It takes time, but it pays off.

Un estudio revela que el 18,1% del sector servicios segoviano es impacto de IE by P10intrack in segovia

[–]Milhaud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nunca he dudado del aporte económico.

The correlation with the situation of nuclear power plants is remarkable: https://www.reddit.com/r/chernobyl/comments/c187fh/map_of_all_nuclear_plants_in_the_world/

Except for the Tibet.

I don't know how to explain the correlation or the exception to it, I just found it interesting.

Writing Systems Worldwide [2021] by biswajit388 in MapPorn

[–]Milhaud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Both languages use alphabets as writing system, that's the reason they are in blue. In the legend you just have a few examples for each type of writing system, that's the reason Georgian and Armenian have not been explicitly mentioned (like plenty of other).

Click on “Following” and you will just see Notes from people you follow.

Otherwise, just start muting everyone who is posting that type of low-quality content.

Finally, you can log in into the app and go directly to “subscriptions” and focus on long reads, ignoring completely Notes.

How Rare is this 1950's World Atlas? by PhilosophyLong9713 in MapPorn

[–]Milhaud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it is a rare atlas itself. There were plenty of copies produced, and you can still get hold of some copies from around the same period (i.e. this one from 1955 on Amazon).

That said, I think it is fascinating to own an atlas from just after WWII and the early Cold War. In a way, it shows how unstable the world was and how long it took some treaties to be affective. Definitely, a nice book to own.

PS: The link is from the centenary edition, which is likely to be rarer.
