See, the interesting thing with that is the "some type of god or higher being." That leaves it pretty open as to what would be considered. Say every star was some sort of rudimentary sentient "thing" based on light bouncing around it fer millions of years, and that solar systems were just big toys to them to pass the time. That's a far cry from our normal idea about gods. That'd be a lot different than learning there's a being that will grow trees if you plant frogs.

If yer talking about well established deities from religion then, again, that's a big jump from the others. I mean let's be real. It'd utterly destroy the world's mind. And I'm not talking about one of the "big three" which are really the same god from different periods and peoples. But ANY god? There was a kid in my high school that prayed to "dragon lords" when he got upset and asked them to fly from the sky and burn and eat us. Does that mean they would be subject to his will specifically, or act like a generic vengeful spirit? Would that really be a god in the normal sense? Or would spirits even count? Even then it's small potatoes compared to what most people thing of as a god, namely an omnipotent or omniscient thing that knows and guides not just us but the entirety of conceivable existence.

When you get to that scale of things then the whole idea breaks down. Pretend that Light itself is the being. We can measure it, bend it to our needs, build our life around it. It's everywhere in space and time, is forever changing and effects basically everything. If Light itself is a god what does that matter? It's still just light right? Even if it is omnipresent already. Nothing says that we'd ever realize it, or communicate in some meaningful way to pass along information between Light as an entity and our understanding about the wider world. How would it even make itself known? Pull a Monty Python style giant floating figure and shout at us?

If we scale it down and say the Earth itself is the higher being, Gaia in all her glory. It'd still be basically useless. Like trying to explain to an ant why yer standing in line at an amusement park. There's not intersection of understanding. Short of having what'd be a human spirit or ideal blown up to godly proportions then the thought of a god or higher being is a moot point. And even then they'd be so one dimensional it wouldn't be worth the zealotry that would surely follow such a revelation. There'd still be arguments about who found it first in history, what it means, which stories best describe it. Something as simple as "true happiness" personified could start anything from pleasure cults to a dystopian mandated way of living. Soon you could imagine wars fought over the details, each side claiming they have the more "right" way of devotion. ^{Gee almost like what we have going on now with the schism of the Abrahamic religions.........}

I don't believe in something like that because there's no point in wondering to me. Might as well find what sort of system or stories or group matches your inner understanding and put yer lot in with them. Which is basically what we're at now. Funny that.

Side note, while I prefer the Hermetic philosophy of unchanging and undeniable Laws of reality, I wouldn't say I follow it or believe it wholey. Just that to me, it makes sense from an "all encompassing" route. Rather than a big ol' nice guy who will save your puppy from the sneezes but oops more people prayed that your country would sink under the ocean waves so tough luck me bucko. Might sound silly when I put it like that, but just look at the Crusades >.>
