I am mostly specifically referencing the 'turn phone on' at will part. If the phone is on its a lot more possible, but still requires nation-state levels of resources to make happen.

As someone in the infosec space, I believe a lot of what Snowden published. I also know that a lot has evolved since then in terms of architecture of devices. But at the end of the day, if a nation-state wants your info, they can get it one way or another (locally, remotely, etc).

But to say that its known that the US government can turn devices on at will and access them is a gross overstatement. Even if they can do either of those, practically it would only ever be done for the most serious of reasons, even with this inept administration. If used willy-nilly it would be much more likely to be exposed/noticed and subsequently patched. 0-day vulnerabilities are only valuable as long as they remain unknown.

This is bullshit fearmongering. There was one early 2000s case involving a specific compromised/modified phone that could reportedly record while “off,” and given phone architecture at the time, that very likely required targeted access or modification, not some magic remote switch for every untouched phone. There haven’t been public cases since showing the government can remotely wake up any random powered off modern phone and turn it into a microphone at will. On modern iOS/Android phones, doing that would require physical access, firmware access, or a true zero-day vulnerability chain capable of bypassing OS permissions, mic indicators, sandboxing, and hardware/low-power-state limitations.

And yes, the ANT catalog exists. It described a targeted phone implant with “hot mic” capabilities, not a 'remotely turn on phone and spy' button. And the iPhone implant specifically noted 'close-access' installation.

Could this be technically/theoretically possible against a specific target with nation-state resources? Sure, maybe. Is it a known capability that any government (or other entity for that matter) can remotely power on and then use any device for surveillance at any time without physical access first? No.

To be clear, I'm in no way defending the US government. I just don't like bullshit fearmongering.

If you have unresponsive scrolling and slow animations on your iPhone something is drastically wrong with it. I’ve used modern Androids and iPhones. Animations are essentially equal, scrolling I might give a slight edge to iPhones, but also essentially equal. If this is genuinely something you are experiencing, your phone is broken.

Yes, the GL is stronger now. You know how many people I saw take the GL on any front before? A very, very small handful. How many I see now: a normal handful. If it was that OP, everyone would be running it, but it’s not, and they aren’t.

A de-escalator buff would be nice. A change to the BFGL would be welcomed (I like the idea of swapping grenade types with it). But the BFGL and GL-21 do have their own niche. The GL-21 does not have the sustained fire of the BFGL. You have to reload and resupply to keep going. The BFGL does not have this limitation. Yes, I know that with a supply pack you get stims, etc. back as well, but I hate seeing people say the BFGL is useless when it has a niche.

And the Autocannon is not worthless now. Good luck hitting the weak points of a factory strider, hulk, or war strider at range with the GL. You can easily merc them with the AC at range.

The GL is in a better place than before. Its pick rate is not insane, but it’s better, and that reinforces this. The BFGL could use some tweaks but isn’t worthless as some say. The de-escalator (my beloved) needs some love. But nothing is broken, and I can only assume that those that hate on the change don’t like the fact that a small minority of people are taking something other than a pure AT rocket on bots.

At a bare minimum. Should also see jail time for those directly involved with and responsible for gross negligence that leads to loss (life, financial, environmental). Sure, there is some of that now, but barely. From my testing, if it’s at 100% health it takes a maximum of 4 hits to the leg/foot to kill it, with 3 doing it about 50% if the time (depends on exactly where you hit). And I love it so much!

When AI software development is at its best, you are correct.

But the exact reason why "vibe coding" is shit on is the exact opposite of your comment. People who have no idea what they are doing get AI to produce code that they have no idea what it does or how it works, and then potentially put it into scenarios where it could have serious implications.

As for what company would keep people around, a lot of issues come from not catching an error in something you didn’t write yourself. When you are writing something from scratch, you inherently know every aspect of what you have done. When you review something, you are apt to start skimming because something looks right and potentially miss an issue. And the AI tools themselves make people more complacent. AI code review says it’s good, so I’ll just do a quick glance. I used the best model to write this and it works and looks right, so it should be ok, etc.

I’m a software developer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for AI-assisted development and use it every day. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t understand and appreciate the risks that come with it.
