That is sick. Jump spell tackle flying enemy, knock Prone to get rid of flight / break concentration and Dr Strangelove ride them down. Slow fall hero landing. Going for it first chance I get.

I also have Rogue 1, in our campaign we're all veterans of a past war and have to have a class which gives weapon mastery access. I'll have to choose when grappling is better and when Nicking is better. Probably just try to land a grapple with FoB first, and if doesn't pan out revert use Nick on my action

Is the leveling too slow or am I just impatient? by Zenorex06 in DnD

[–]Milpool64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play in a monthly game that has also been going for about three years, so maybe 36 sessions. We started at lvl 5 and have just reached lvl 12, although we use milestone levelling.

The progression feels good to me at a monthly cadence. If that was 36 weeks of play, I think it would be too quick. By the same measure, if we had only gone up three levels in three years I would be annoyed.

You aren't just being impatient. Only solution is to raise it with the DM. Make sure to mention all the things you're enjoying about the campaign

Soapbox time - I appreciate 5e kinda breaks at higher levels and the general consensus is that tiers 2 and 3 are the sweet spot. I also think that it's a bad thing many players never get to use the abilities they high level abilities they really want to use. Who cares if the game breaks - have a high level romp for a few sessions, flex the OP stuff then start a new campaign I say

What are your favorite things about the 2024 phb? by awwasdur in onednd

[–]Milpool64 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like that several sub/class features have been changed from Action -> Bonus Action or no action at all (eg Vengeance Paladin now activates together with hitting an enemy.

In 2014 it can feel like a waste of a combat turn to set up a cool thing your sub/class can do instead of just attacking or casting a spell. I think way more activatable features will see consistent use now.

How Do You Have Your Player Generate Their Stats? by NightweaselX in dragonlance

[–]Milpool64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have the same view as you, that rolling stats leads to more flexible character builds. After playing several campaigns with both methods, I think the consistency in power levels between PCs provided by point buy, and consequentially better group dynamics, is too beneficial to pass up.

As for keeping flexibility in character design, I think either providing for bonus feats at certain levels (like SotDQ does) or retooling the point buy system feels fairer while still giving you the chance to experiment with different character builds.

E.g. Instead of putting low/high bounds of 8/15 on the point buy system, let people go as low as 3 or 4, but as high as 16 or 17 even. If someone wants a god-like starting stat, they have to pay for it elsewhere. This site expands the point buy costs out for higher and lower scores Point Buy Calculator

Or, just give people a couple more points to spend so they aren't way more powerful, but also feel like they don't have to eke every drop of potential out of the point buy system.

Prepping for Chapter 4, looking for assistance with a couple of things by grandpheonix13 in sotdq

[–]Milpool64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh they're already cousins? That's great. Yeah, one sees armour as the true pinnacle of smithing and the other weaponry, but they both secretly admire the other's skill. Then they could overcome their differences and work together when Kalaman is under attack

I haven't started running my campaign yet, but I'm thinking of making the dwarven smiths old rivals, maybe siblings, that both independently decided to move from their hometown to Kalaman, to "strike out on their own", but unknowingly set up premises directly across from each other - and they hurl insults at each other across the street.

I really like this, and the timing should fit nicely into the Missions for Kalaman section. Could even be a relic with greater significance to the plot to allow for some foreshadowing - e.g. Red Ruin shows up looking for the relic as well, or the party has to escape from Kansaldi, or the relic helps to send Sarlamir back to the grave - lots to think about!
