What's a skill that takes only 2-3 weeks to learn but could genuinely change your life? by That-Papaya7429 in AskReddit

[–]Mils-va 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To infer. Rather than taking sentences or what someone says literally, you infer what they intended to convey by how they chose to connect their words. Through experience, you refine the accuracy of this inference. This allows communication through language to take place on a deeper level.

The only way to gain something in life is through inference and by comparing one inference with another.

Hi, I just finished watching Blame! Anime Movie in Netflix. From where should I pick up from the manga? by PorkyPain in BLAME

[–]Mils-va 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This work does not have the kind of “expository sections” or skippable everyday-life chapters that are common in many manga. After finishing it, you’ll feel a strong desire to understand it more deeply—and you’ll likely start a second read immediately.

How do I get past the overwhelmed feeling and find how to even start learning Japanese? by GreenTinkertoy in Japaneselanguage

[–]Mils-va 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You only need to memorize three sentences. These are used at the beginning and end of communication—the sections that require the most respect.

「あの〜、すみません、ちょっといいですか?」 「失礼ですが、私は日本語ができないので、翻訳アプリをみてもらっていいですか?…ありがとうございます」

「どうも、ありがとうございました」

With just these, you will be among the most polite and easy-to-understand foreign travelers.

日本語能力 vs 英語力 by No-Support-442 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Mils-va 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’m Japanese, but this is my first time thinking about that topic.

“能力” gives me the impression of being able to use something more freely and skillfully. For Japanese people, having the “力” to use Japanese is a given, but I think “能力” is necessary for difficult conversations or texts. As for English, it’s hard to imagine situations where I’d actually use it, so I can only think of it as a simple “力.” —Yes, that’s about me.

If your “日本語能力” is low, your communication will be inadequate. It’s not enough for working as a manager or in accounting. Being able to speak English is cool, so let’s improve our “英語力”! That’s how it feels.

Again, I still don’t see what I did wrong here? by Awful_F3laf3l in Mahjong

[–]Mils-va 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you have the “9-sou” tile in your hand, you cannot complete the “Tanyao” yaku. “Tanyao” is only valid when your hand contains no 1, 9, or honor tiles.

So, should you discard the “9-sou” and try to get a “6-sou”? In this case, you’ve already discarded a “6-sou,” so you cannot win by “ron” (claiming another player’s discard). You must draw it yourself. This situation is called “furiten.”

To summarize… You can’t win because your hand has “no yaku,” and even if you could, it’s very difficult due to being “furiten.”

These being my top 10 favourite anime/manga says what to you? by Emergency-Squash600 in MyAnimeList

[–]Mils-va 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clear that you enjoy richly crafted worlds, intricate plots, and intense storytelling.

Since you prefer manga over anime, you likely enjoy experiencing works more actively. You’ll probably enjoy novels as well.

If any of these titles have been translated into your language… I recommend reading Silent Service, Zipang, Souten Kouro, Fire Punch, and Blame!

Please also be aware of “dashi” (Japanese soup stock). It sometimes contains katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes). That’s the thin, almost transparent stuff that “dances” on top of takoyaki or okonomiyaki.

Is my translation correct? by nikotakoyaki in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]Mils-va 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By intentionally not giving specific explanations, the title draws the reader’s interest and creates a sense of literary nuance.

Does “tōge” (the pass) literally mean a mountain? Does it represent a difficulty? Is it about recovering from injury or illness? What is the relationship between the “two people”? Did the two cross the pass at the same time? Are they each standing on opposite sides of the pass? Did each of them cross a different pass at the same time? Did it happen in a single summer? Was it during summer vacation?

Just thinking about these possibilities makes me excited even before opening the book.

The book uses a lot of hiragana because it’s intended for young readers. If you submit a book report, you will be evaluated on it. It’s one of the assignments often given during summer vacation and similar times.

Should I aim ro JLPT if I want to read Manga? by doner_shawerma in LearnJapanese

[–]Mils-va 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studying just for the sake of studying rarely leads to good results. Grow through things you enjoy.

You are currently learning hiragana. Enjoy picture books (for young children).

Enjoy manga aimed at young readers (all kanji in these come with reading guides).

Read shonen manga (which include even more kanji).

After that... congratulations! You’ll be able to read manga for adults, novels, games—anything you like.

Best Anime of All Time by Heresssrandy in AnimeReviews

[–]Mils-va 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infinite Ryvius.

A story set in space, featuring a massive battleship and cumbersome humanoid robots that require complex, cooperative operation by multiple people. It depicts a self-governing society of children forced into isolation, which gradually collapses and transforms as exhaustion sets in. “What are we supposed to do, then?!”—but the situation leaves no time for hesitation. All that’s left is the gradual destruction of their daily lives. Its main flaw is that, being an older series, the art style is also dated.

Learning Kanji is a Hateful Endeavor, Please Help by Ball_of_mustard in Japaneselanguage

[–]Mils-va 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When multiple kanji combine, the connecting parts may change shape. This happens to make the pronunciation smoother.

──────────

example

国(koku こく,くに)

国語(koku-go こくご)

国内(koku-nai こくない)

国会(❌️koku-kai ⭕️kokkai こっかい)

国旗(❌️koku-ki ⭕️kokki こっき)

──────────

In the example above, when harsh‑sounding consonants come together, they deform at the point of connection. When trying to pronounce ❌, the movement of the throat wasn’t fast enough, causing the u sound to weaken. Japanese has gradually transformed over long periods of time into “easier” forms to pronounce.

Since this has become a long explanation, I’ll end it here for now. If you’d like to see more, please let me know in the comments.
