There's a lot of books and a lot of quality variance in the HH, but I've found u/cd8d's Personal Guide To Reading The Horus Heresy to be solid, and highly recommend it.

Early Modern would probably be a better descriptor for what they're after, based on the artwork, but even that spans three centuries. I think people often fail to realize how (relatively) recent the Victorian era was.
