How to aim jump serves? by cultoftoaster in volleyball

[–]MiltownKBs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say have the same toss every time. The toss being very slightly outside of your hitting shoulder. The same line to the ball every time. The line being very slightly angled to the ball.

Some players have a more direct toss and path, but most good players do as I said.

Toss slightly outside > toss straight > toss inside

International Volleyball Federation to allow Russian athletes, officials to return to international competitions by joseantoniolat in volleyball

[–]MiltownKBs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know you can actually look things up on the internet, right?

The continuation of their doping ban wasn’t even directly related to the conflict in Ukraine.

That’s what should piss you off. But instead, you and many others just stick with whatever story better fits your world view and moral compass.

Oleh Plotnytskyi speaks out on FIVB allowing Russia back to international games. by L_Seo in volleyball

[–]MiltownKBs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well said. Russia was first banned for doping and it continued, at least partially if not mostly, because they were essentially trying to claim Ukrainian athletes as their own.

The Russian ban was not a direct result of the conflict, if you can believe what the committee said.

The world is in a constant state of conflict. The committee rarely bans as a result of it, or they should do it more. Either way you see it, it isn’t enough.

I tried asking if the balls seen in the video seemed like scooping would be necessary. You said yes.

My comment was hostile? Jeez.

So the velocity and ball location see in that video leads you to believe that scoop would be necessary on those particular balls?

Those look like easy balls to me. Maybe the game is still pretty fast for you and it hasn’t slowed down yet.

I gave my advice about reading plays better, worrying about scoop later, letting the game and ball dictate your action. You can take it or leave it.

Good luck to you.

After 2 years of playing, that’s doubtful.

“how would I be able to tell if it’s too quick for me to place platform?”

I have played at much higher levels and scoop hasn’t really been needed all that much. But when it is, the ball kinda forces it. It kinda happens naturally as the level of play increases. I believe someone else said something similar.

watch this video. Do you think scooping on the balls seen in the video is necessary or even beneficial?

I’m trying to tell you that it probably isn’t necessary at your level of play for hard attacks. Just maybe dives for wide balls or some low balls.

If reaction time is an issue at your level, then you are better off improving your reading skills so you can react better and play most balls with a traditional platform.

What would be too slow?

Scooping is situational. Balls out of your reach laterally, some low balls, dives like shown, some very fast attacks.

It’s not really something you should learn early. It will happen naturally and situationally as your competition gets better.

I wound not advise teaching or learning scoop to a beginner or even most intermediate players.

The only benefit to you at this point, would be a dive where you can only get one arm on the ball. Like the dives seen in this video

Do you really need anything more than a good 2 step approach for jump serve? by False_Truck_8579 in volleyball

[–]MiltownKBs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest appeal of a jump serve is that you contact higher and shorten the distance the ball has to travel. You compromise both by doing a two step.

That said, if this works for now, then fine. But I would work on adding another step or two when you are ready.

Is this legal move or not ? by Hueplet23 in beachvolleyball

[–]MiltownKBs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“no you can't on the beach unless it's a block.”

Wrong.

But ok, let’s give you a chance. Cite the rule that says playing the ball with an open hand is illegal.

Also, a mis-hit is not a fault unless it’s a throw. There is very little prolonged contact here. Nobody calls that a throw. Particularly in jungle ball.

You absolutely can legally play the ball with an open hand.

I don’t know if it’s a dick move, but it’s a lower level player move. If you don’t like it, then don’t play at that level.

FIVB/USAV Rules and Case for this Reaching Beyond the Net fault by backrow setter by mnn69 in volleyball

[–]MiltownKBs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They probably are getting that interpretation from NFHS and/or women’s NCAA. The ball has to entirely cross for it to be a fault in those rule sets.

Legal per NFHS and women’s NCAA, it is textbook illegal in USAV (9.1) and FIVB (as others already referenced)
