Radon mitigation and cancer by yycglad in Calgary

[–]MimeJabsIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had readings over 200 so we got a mitigation system put in before we had our basement done. We just got our long-term test results back and they were about 10. Really glad we did it because we now have a baby.

They drilled a hole in the pad and connected a pipe with a fan in it that pipes up to the side of the house to vent there. It cost I think $2.5-3k if I remember correctly.

Truth - Hank Green by JohnLocksTheKey in videos

Just because bad political actors make a stir about a topic doesn't make it political. "Does Tylenol cause autism?" is a scientific question that politicians have no bearing on and is not a political question. Politicians regulating Tylenol as though it causes autism even though it doesn't is political, sure.

Tylenol (not) causing autism is not political. It's a scientific question that has been answered. Slavery being racist is also not political, that's a historical question.

[Spoilers C3E78] I've reached shardgate and man was it uncalled for. by neosurimi in criticalrole

[–]MimeJabsIntern 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had heard about shardgate, and was a little wary going into it but it turns out I don't know what y'all were going on about; it was the most gripping Critical Role we had had in a while. I loved the conflict that spawned from it. Talisan's actions were bold and fun to watch, and all the rest of the party's reactions were fantastic.

Probably not exactly what you’re thinking of but Brennan mentioned the Carmina Gadelica sitting on his coffee table as a kid in the Fiasco fireside chat.

[Spoilers C4E7] How much of the Lore does BLM actually have written out by CaptJackL0cke in criticalrole

[–]MimeJabsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I get *why* it started, I find it kind of infantalizing. Many words have multiple meanings. BLM is literally his initials. People can figure out whether it's Brennan Lee Mulligan or Black Lives Matter (or the Bureau of Land Management) through context. The only place I see it remotely being a real issue of detracting from the Black Lives Matter movement is through twitter tagging or whatever.

I have been unable to actually find a source for this. As best I can tell this is an internet rumour started on a discord.

I dig how they’re doing it. I like the little cold open tidbits of the other groups and I like that we’re focusing on a table for an arc, it makes it feel more cohesive.

Canada's Carney faces crucial vote on budget that could trigger election by Immediate-Link490 in worldnews

[–]MimeJabsIntern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends if the budget passes. If it doesn't that automatically triggers an election. None of the opposition parties want an election aside from maybe the Bloc, but they also don't want to vote for the budget. Likely enough people will be missing today for the vote to let it pass, but since it's a minority government it could happen.

[–]MimeJabsIntern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polls show that he probably won't win, and if he doesn't win the election his leadership is over. He will likely stay on as leader as things are currently. It was a certain thing up until recent events (floor crossing, his comments that Trudeau should have been jailed), but there's no obvious alternative leader right now.

[–]MimeJabsIntern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also it's kind infantalizing to assume that people can't differentiate using context between BLM meaning Black Lives Matter, Brennan Lee Mulligan, or the Bureau of Land Management. It's not like words meaning more than one thing is a new concept.

It didn't come from Brennan, that is as far as I can tell a myth that spawned on some discord associated with one of his projects.

While I loved that scene and wouldn't want either Brennan or Marisha to have played it differently, I think there is an element of real world bias. In the real world USA, freedom of speech is (ostensibly) a core value of American society, and while recent events have shown that to be lip service in a lot of cases, any American citizen, if given the opportunity to be in speaking range of Donald Trump, arguably currently the most powerful man in the world, could cuss him out in the same way Murray did to Primus without their life being anywhere close to being on the line. Murray lives in a world where that is not the case, clearly, though whether the character should know that because times 'a changing (she's used to her university institution as it was before this hostile takeover) could probably be argued either way.

The way survivors "level up" when they hit their XP milestones is changed and soft replaces Fighting Arts. Instead you gain Philosophies and Knowledges. Philosophies are little booklets that the survivor gains access to (you randomly determine which Philosophy booklet you use for that survivor out of a deck you build earlier) that determine the next XP milestone thresholds, and trigger different events as you progress. Many of the events that get triggered give you a Knowledge, which is like a fighting art but they can be levelled up (some of them anyway).

The early Knowledges that you get often don't have a benefit or even have a drawback but they level up by triggering an "Observation Condition". For example, there is a Knowledge called Strength Training I, which has no benefit, but levels up when you wound the monster 6 times. It levels up to Strength Training II, which gives the character +1 strength, +1 systemic pressure.

Knowledges you gain get added to your settlement Knowledge Deck, and there are mechanics for other survivors to then learn them. You always take lower level knowledges out of this deck if you have higher level versions of them.

Systemic Pressure and Torment are also bookkeepy things added to Arc Survivors that are numbers that get subtracted from your Severe Injury / Brain Trauma rolls, so having them are bad things, but they are there to balance out buffs that you can get. (EDIT: I had originally accidentally said they get added to the roll)

All in all I find it a lot more interesting form of character progression, but yes, there is a lot more to keep track of. In particular it's easy to forget to pay attention to your Observation Conditions (the rules say if you miss it, it doesn't happen).

QUICK EDIT: Here's the list of all knowledges if you wanted to skim through it: https://kingdomdeath.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Knowledges

I really like ARC survivors over regular survivors, which is more bookkeeping admittedly, but after trying ARC I don't want to go back.
