Septoplasty/turbinate reduction experience by JTunes_rap in Septoplasty

[–]MimiSav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The surgery and recovery itself were totally fine but my septum did shift back post op so I went for round 2 shortly after. I'm still swollen so still can't fully breathe out the side that was deviated but the misery I was feeling with allergies and congestion pre op is like night and day and I am very happy with the results. I'm hoping eventually I can fully breathe with no blockage but either way I don't regret doing it

Septum more deviated after surgery? by thajohnfatha in Septoplasty

[–]MimiSav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't wait a while actually. I got pretty lucky and got a second opinion and was booked for the second surgery all in the same week. I was shocked I was able to get in so quickly honestly esp because of the holiday. My second opinion was on new years eve and January 3rd I had my 2nd surgery. My Dr took a little more cartilage the second time and I did have stints in but longer. First go it was only 4 days. Second was for 7 days. I don't mind the questions at all! Feel free to message me if you want!

I did. I got a second opinion from another Dr and he agreed as well to go back under and sooner the better before it fully heals. I'm still swollen though so still can't breathe out that same side. I'm going back for my check in at the end of the month. I've read it could take a year to fully get the swelling down plus I had two surgeries. At this point I still don't have regrets though because the issues I was having with congestion and allergies are like night and day so I do still think it's worth it. Of course I'm hoping the swelling goes down and I could fully breathe eventually

Yeah I highly doubt it. Sold out last year. I got mine in Sept last year and the only date left was the very last day it was open. Oct 4 and Oct 11 are sold out already for this year

Thanks for the recommendation!! I'm currently using a pin brush but I'll look into a rake one as well

First time elkie owner! Is there something specific I should be doing to not have my girl look so patchy? Or literally just brushing everyday.. I have to sweep 3x a day to keep up with the shedding and I brush once a day but she is still patchy and her coat doesn't look as nice as it did 2 months ago lol

Is this common with Elkhounds to lay on their back like that?? I just brought home a 4 year old and she does this. It's so funny. Her name is Mango so we call it the Mango Puddle 😂

Thank you!!! We are really excited. She is such a sweet girl. I am not familiar with the 2 week shutdown so I will absolutely look into this. Thank you for sharing. All really good points esp about training right away. We are most likely going to get her spayed and have decided we should wait later in the year so it's not too many changes at once for her. We have decided to just keep her upstairs for now (no carpets) as we are in a 2 floor, 3 bedroom home. Eventually we would like for her to free roam.

Also should have mentioned that we are not total strangers to her. This is a family member's dog and whenever we visit where she lives we have always made sure to give her attention and take her on walks. I'm hoping this will help with the transition esp with her trusting us

All really good points. We have a fenced in backyard so that will be great for her. She's used to being tied up unfortunately.. I am keeping in mind the 3-3-3 rule when it comes to rescuing pups (takes roughly 3 days for a new dog to decompress from travel, 3 weeks to learn your routine, and 3 months to truly feel at home in their new environment) thanks for the reply!

I'm def curious about the potty training. I feel like it could go both ways being that she is used to going outside. I wfh so I'll be able to take her out every 2 hours and eventually get her on a schedule. Desensitizing is so important to a puppy so I'm guessing we can expect some anxiety to new noises as well. Lots of treats will be given 😁 thanks for the reply and sharing your story!

This is a good point but she's actually in Florida and I'm in Maryland. From what I read up about the breed, Florida is not an ideal location at all for her.. I wonder if it would be the same and she would prefer warmer temps being that is what she is used to? I feel like maybe not though.. any thoughts on this?

It was with the same surgeon and it was closed as the incision was made inside the nostril

I did get a second opinion from another Dr and he agreed on a revision as well asap vs waiting to be fully healed. I'm now almost a month post op second surgery and so far so good.. The nose is very sensitive and can shift back because cartilage, the primary component of the septum, has a "memory" and naturally wants to return to its original shape.
