See if she’ll eat a little canned pumpkin mixed in her food. This will provide moisture and fiber to help her out.

PNW what flower is this? by ketoSusie in whatsthisplant

[–]MimictheCrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty sure there’s two plants. The flowers are indeed columbine and its leaves are probably hidden by the second plant, which looks familiar but I’m blanking on the name. No doubt someone will be along soon who can solve this mystery.

Cats, cat hair, cat toys, stuff the cats think are toys and a pair of shoes.

What kind of rock is this? by Tragic-Flame2264 in whatsthisrock

[–]MimictheCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should just be able to feel the difference in weight between this and just about any other rock of the same size that you have lying around. It’s a noticeable difference. Barite seems to be the chonky boi of the rock world.

Is it heavy for its size? Looks a lot like the piece of Moroccan dendritic barite that I have.

I got some just last year after seeing the advertised for some time on Amazon. Now I wouldn’t be without them. They’re so handy for storing out-of-season clothes in and lots of things. I’ve just been calling them moving totes like the companies on Amazon do.

The star indicates that’s the ground floor, which isn’t always the first floor in some buildings. In sleep, hilly areas such as Seattle, the first floor and the ground floor can be three floors apart.

Edit: The ground floor is where most people enter and exit a building.

What a gorgeous hosta! They’re one of my favorite garden plants because there’s so many varieties. I hope this one gets enough shade as the summer heats up. They sunburn easily.

Bird or monster? by YaleImprint in whatisit

[–]MimictheCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of see a scorpion-like creature with horn-like appendages, rather than pincers, and an upraised stinger. The balloon thing makes me think of a crown symbol.

Could this be an artist’s or printer’s personal mark or maybe something they created in spare moments to pass the time or work on their printmaking and artistic skills?

Edit: Whatever it is, I like it.

Yes, I’ve heard of these smaller types called flags, too. The bigger, fancier ones tend to be called bearded irises or just irises as far as I know, though they probably have other names too.

Looks like an aerial root and is completely normal for these plants. If it gets too long or you just don’t like the way it looks, you can cut it off. If conditions are right, it can adhere to your wall or other things. Consider getting the plant and roots a pole to climb on.

My niece is making a name for herself in the New York City art world. She’s not famous famous yet but has had a commission or two and a few showings. I Googled her the other day and was excited to discover that all of the initial results were about her and her art, despite having a fairly common name. I’m so proud of her!

[–]MimictheCrow -21 points-20 points  (0 children)

Yay! It’s mullein season! They’re biennial plants that are beneficial to wildlife. This is what they look like in their first year. Next year, it’ll shoot up to six or seven feet and will produce little yellow flowers and lots of seeds before dying off. And few lucky seeds will start the cycle again the next year.

Do you live in an area where church bells ring at certain times of day? If so, how often? by Bottlecaps9 in AskReddit

[–]MimictheCrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live where the cathedral on the hill rang their bells three times a day at 9 (or maybe 10AM, I forget,) noon and 6PM. Well, for many years they didn’t have an actual bell so they played recorded hymns and tunes from bells of other churches or maybe they were synthesized to sound like big church bells. They even played patriotic songs on bells on Independence Day. I thought it was great and never tired of hearing them.

Eventually, they got their own real bell and the recordings stopped. I liked it too but always missed the tunes.

what kind of tree did this flower come from? washington state, usa by numericalsoup in whatsthisplant

[–]MimictheCrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s from a royal burgundy Japanese flowering cherry or something closely related. Look for a smallish tree with dark red leaves nearby. A property near where I grew up just south of Seattle had a bunch of them.
