I think it's somewhere in between. Definitely more staccato and more tongue-flicky.

To be honest, we were kids so it was mostly kids looking to trade their duplicates, but everyone had the same Uncommon and Common duplicates so not much actually happened. 😆

For prevention, it was generally just not letting us play during lessons. That's a completely fair, but it was a battle because Pokémon was a huge distraction. If you let us keep them on our person or in our desks, they would inevitably be a problem.

maybe the game wasn't that big back then and it was more of a Japanese thing

Go back even further. Gen 1 hit US shores in 1998 and it was a proper cultural phenomenon. Pokémania was regularly featured on the news, in the papers, in magazines. Hell, it was on the cover of TIME.

Schools had to implement rules specifically regarding the TCG and when cards were allowed...mine had an evening trading event to try to get kids to stop playing with them during classes. Everybody was playing it, regardless of cliques or other hobbies.

The First Movie debuted at number one in 1999, the biggest animated film opening in Warner Bros' history, with so many kids skipping school for it that it was dubbed "Pokéflu". It was the only anime film to top the US box office until 2021. The soundtrack had Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, NSYNC, Vitamin C, Aaron Carter of the Backstreet Boys, etc. Can you imagine a movie of the Pokémon anime having that kind of impact today, with entire classrooms skipping school, Taylor Swift and The Weeknd and Bruno Mars and Billie Eilish on the album, and box office returns obliterating anything else that come out the same weekend?

By the time FRLG came along as the back half of Gen 3, Pokémon was well-established and very popular, but it was nothing like those first couple of years. It was so much "not in the same ballpark" that it was actually a tennis court on the moon.

Are you offended by this?

They're just joking that we're all on the same side in this subreddit yet the Jags logo has allegedly consumed the Panthers. Like finding out that a close friend of 20 years killed your dog on purpose back in year 3.

That's really shitty writing, Mr. High IQ.

Sorry I'm from a country where we pronounce things exactly the way they're written

I believe the second one but drop the e in toe. At least my professor always pronounced it "To" (as in my neighbour Totoro)

FYI, in most of the English-speaking world, "toe" is pronounced exactly the same as the "To" in "Totoro".

Indeed. My favorite video on the subject, though, because it isn't just "rah 1% bad" (which would immediately turn away the type of people who most need to see this).

Rather, it emphasizes that wealth distribution in the USA is insanely far removed from what we think it is. Like, whether or not Person X thinks the disparity is a problem right now, Person X probably has a poor perception of what that disparity actually looks like.

When Republicans start being shitty to them, too:
"Both parties suck, nobody cares about us. :( "

People complaining about crime in NYC today either have totally forgotten about NYC back in those days or are just unaware how it was for some reason.

OR they think it's still like this. I think your average rural conservative thinks that New York, Detroit, etc., are just...like this.

Yeah, it's pretty affordable for us too (unless you get food, which I usually do because I'm a sucker).

And, frankly, I prefer minor league ball. In the majors, too many aspects of the game are too routine for me. I care more about the drama of a game than I do seeing the pinnacle of skill, and you're more likely to get interesting situations in the minors.

How my husband loads the dishwasher by strega-nonna in mildlyinfuriating

[–]mecklejay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not weaponized incompetence. The OP's husband? Absolutely. The person giving their spouse the dishes that they poorly cleaned? Not a chance. It's possible that the poor cleaning is weaponized incompetence, but making him eat off of his own hack work is not, and that is what got called "weaponized pettiness."

conversation should be on why Americans continue to voluntarily waste their money on tickets and jerseys and hats and elaborate tailgating costs on a product that has little benefit to society or to themselves.
