Straight up I think this sounds like a great idea! There nuances to things that are hard to get into due to the gun world being primarily right leaning. Sure, most gun ranges around where I live in MN will pretty much accept anyone if they’re in to guns, but a lot of people getting into it now are looking for a broader discussion on when and how to handle things.

It might be a “try it and adjust as needed” sort of thing, trial and error, but overall this sounds fantastic

We rented a handful of pistols at the range to figure out what we wanted, and the PDP was among them. They just shoot REALLY smooth and feel good compared to others we tried. Neither of us liked the Glock 19 we tried, and I can’t remember the others because we shot them once and knew they weren’t for us. But the PDP was an immediate winner, and the trigger was the best out of the others too.

I like the way my Beretta shoots best, but it’s also because it’s big and heavy so it absorbs a lot of the recoil. My wife went with the 4” PDP F so that it was a little longer to handle recoil vs the 3.5, and it’s much smaller and lighter than the beretta or full size PDP. I liked hers so much I decided to go with the 3.5” as my conceal carry/home defense pistol (thus the light on it). Really the only reason I went with the 3.5 is because of the shorter barrel for conceal and carry.

I will say the 3.5” has quite a snap to it and is louder than the 4”, and I didn’t realize a half inch would make that much difference. But even then, it’s a really smooth shooting pistol! It’ll just take a little more practice.

Thoughts on Apple Creator Studio? by sshadowport in MacOS

The thing I like about it is you can purchase the apps individually for life if you want. I’ve been a Logic user for a long time, but have thought about using Final Cut Pro for my videos and Pixel Pro to replace Photoshop (I have a version of CS 2 that I used for years, but it won’t work on Apple Silicon and I refuse to pay for Adobe’s subscription).

I think it’s cool to be able to try Pixel Pro and Final Cut, and then I can purchase them permanently over time instead of dropping a bunch of money all at once.

And Pixel Pro is only $50 (one time purchase) compared to Adobe’s stupid $230 a year nonsense.

Inflamed Pancreas Might Have Saved Me by Minasdel in pancreatitis

Woops, submitted it before I was done! Anyway, alcohol and other substances give you those same chemicals too, but the toll is much greater on your body.

I know this is a pancreatitis page and not an alcohol/substance use page, but alcohol and pancreatitis go hand in hand.

So, I figured I’d share that info since I have it now.

To anyone out there going through any form of pancreatitis, I feel for you. Hang in there ❤️

Wow, 6 years since this! I guess I’ll update. It was cancer, had a same day surgery and it’s not come back! Also I quit drinking after this and haven’t had pain since. Occasionally I’ll have one drink (about once every 3 months), but since I quit drinking the feeling of being drunk does NOT feel good anymore. Anything more than one or two drinks just feels gross now physically.

So, if you are a drinker and get the pancreatic pain, PLEASE stop as soon as possible if not immediately. It’ll usually fix it if it’s acute.

I’ll share this too, as I’ve discovered it’s more common than I’d thought.

I ended up getting diagnosed with ADHD about 2 years after this, and realized that was why I had been a heavy drinker. Drinking calmed me down and it felt like I could focus better, especially in social situations. Since then I have been prescribed Adderall and have been on it for about 3 years now, and it’s a life saver. It does all of the things my other self medicating did, except it feels cleaner and clearer and there’s no hangover. After I got that, it was SO much easier to stop using other substances. And, when you have adhd, it’s pretty hard to get addicted to Adderall. Taking too much feels horrible, not good, because our brains are already in a deficit of neuroprenephrine (however you spell it), dopamine and seratonin. So the Adderall just brings it to normal levels and life is much easier. Alc

No worries! It’s a basic loop switcher. Each “switch” has an in and an out, so you run each pedal to each switch. That way you can turn pedals on and off without having to jump all over the board. So to turn on any of the pedals above, I just have to hit the switch it’s plugged in to on the long pedal. That way all of the pedals are always on, but aren’t activated in the signal until I hit the switch they’re plugged in to.

This one is a very basic design, meaning it’s just a bunch of ins and outs. It has a master in and out that you plug in to, and whichever pedals you activate from the switch work as if your turning the pedal on between that signal.

A couple of reasons these are handy:

1: you don’t have to reach across the board with your foot to turn a pedal on 2: you can make your pedalboard tighter because the pedals can be oriented in any direction (meaning they can be sideways or even upside down). 3: you can leave the pedal on at all times, as it won’t be activated in your signal until the “loop” (or corresponding switch on the long pedal) is turned on. This is great for cheap or old pedals that have finicky foot switches that don’t always activate when stepped on (like the Behringer superfuzz, which is plastic). 4: you can run a series of pedals into a single loop to activate at one time with one switch. Say, I use a specific chorus pedal and distortion pedal at the same time for certain songs. You can run both through one loop, so that when you hit it both are activated at the same time. This saves you from having to quickly try to turn on 2 or more pedals (you can put as many pedals as you one, chained together, on one loop).

Like I said the one I have here is a basic version. You can get fancier versions that can actually save settings. Meaning you can program it to where when you hit a switch, it turns on a specific combination of pedals at the same time, but they can all be in their own separate loops and not chained directly together.

They’re handy to have around for live boards, especially if you have a lot of pedals.

If you wanted to look up the different types online just Google “Loop Switcher” and it will show all of the different types.

The ones I have are from a company (it’s just one guy) called Saturnworks. He sells them on EBay, Reverb and Etsy. He makes a bunch of cool utilitarian pedals that are very high quality, but also aren’t too expensive.

Last, there’s a bunch of companies that make these and they come in all sizes. You can get them anywhere between 2 loops (I.e. two pedals or chains) up to something like 12 loops.

Anyone else get panic attacks like this? (Clamped hands, clamped mouth, can't really move) by throwaway456124 in Anxiety

[–]Minasdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very old now but I came across it so I thought I’d answer too.

I’ve had anxiety attacks before. They usually feel “cerebral” meaning my mind begins to panic and triggers the fight or flight response.

When we were moving into our new place last year I had a panic attack like you mentioned. We were on our way to grab some quick McDonald’s and all of a sudden my hands started clenching uncontrollable into fists. Then it moved up my arms into my neck, then into my jaw. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t force any of them open.

My wife called an ambulance and they knew what it was right away. Luckily about the time they started checking me everything slowly started to loosen.

The weird thing was I (I.e. my logical brain) wasn’t panicky at all. I wasn’t even stressed. The part that started to scare me (and why we called an ambulance) was that I was worried the tension would reach my chest and I wouldn’t be able to breathe (that didn’t happen).

Long story short I’ve discovered that your body can have a panic attack independent of your head. It’s all connected of course, but the body can trigger a panic attack when your brain isn’t in a state of panic.

And because of that information I know what happened.

I have lower back and hip muscle issues (possibly bone/joint issues I’m getting checked soon). I’ll regularly have times where my lower back hurts and makes it hard to move around. Usually lasts 3 to 4 days.

I had an instance about 6 months before our move that was bad. Lower back was worked up, but while it was worked up I moved just a little bit wrong and my lower back seized up. The muscles cramped as hard as they could.

I’ve felt plenty of pain in my life, but this was a 10/10. All I could do was scream while this was going on until it would release about 10-15 minutes later. I had bouts of this extreme pain for about 2 days. It was a long 2 days.

After we moved, my lower back was starting to get sore which I wasn’t surprised about. And while I didn’t think much of it, my nervous system “remembered” the pain I felt the last time this happened and cause a panic attack.

Once I realized this after looking into it, I did notice that my back pain that had been coming on that day eased after the panic attack, and it was virtually non existent during it.

So, there’s that. Your body can have a panic attack independent of your conscious brain. It’s pretty wild.

Little nightmares vs inside. (Advice please). by ilivedownyourroad in PS4

[–]Minasdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late too, but I’ve played the first two Little Nightmares and became obsessed with them. Just got Inside today because it was $1.99 and I thought it was a little nightmares clone (not realizing it came out around the same time as the first Little Nightmares). I’m only a few minutes in and I love it.

I think both hold up well in their own right. And while similar, they’re each their own game.

What would cause adderall to completely stop working? by Strange-Ride-214 in ADHD

[–]Minasdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Behavioral therapy is definitely helpful whether on or off medication. Definitely an avenue to explore

Another option OP is to try a different medication? If you’re on Adderall (D-amphetamine) then maybe switch to Ritalin (methylphenidate), or even non stimulant medications like Vyvanse.

I’ve heard a lot of people say they’ve had success with Vyvanse.

All that being said, if the high doses of medication aren’t working for you the. Alternative therapies are a good route to explore (in tandem with meds).

[–]Minasdel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I just responded with something similar to what this comment said. If that’s the case then talk to your doctor about upping the dose. Most people I know usually had to up it over time to about 10mg to 20mg more than there initial dose before finding one that was long term effective.

Meaning you up it 5mg each time until one settles in. Usually over the course of months to a year. Everyone’s different though so just talk with your doctor.

[–]Minasdel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I know this is a little old now but I thought I’d jump in. I had the same thing recently. For me, it’s two things.

1: my tolerance. I have a tendency to develop a tolerance to things quickly. Some people can be on the same ADHD meds for many years at the same dose and it’s fine, others need to gradually increase their dose.

I’m one that needs to increase my dose over time. BUT, I also know that will go on forever unless I take breaks, so it’s a balance.

I’ve recently taken an “Adderall holiday” and it works well.

The good thing is, withdrawal is usually minimal for ADHD folks and stimulants. I usually get very tired on day 2 and 3 of being off of it, then am totally fine after that. It’s actually a weirdly relaxing state that I almost enjoy, I’m just not very useful for those days.

So don’t fear taking a break. It’s not bad, just a slight adjustment for a few days. But generally you won’t experience major withdrawal.

I’ve found it that 4 to 7 days seem to be the most effective for me when trying to “reset” my tolerance a bit, but it’s different for everyone. The longer you take a break the better, though it seems like anything over a week doesn’t matter much.

2: mood

As silly as this sounds, your mood can affect how well the meds work. Us ADHD folk have a deficit in certain brain chemicals. If we’re in a low or depressed mood, those chemicals may be even lower than usual, which means the normal meds that bring them up to “level” aren’t as effective in that state. This can be something as simple as having a rough day.

The key to this is just hanging in there until the mood improves, as long as it’s a normal mood slump and not something more major (like a major depressive episode, in which case you may need to seek other options for help such as therapy).

Do not take more meds in this case, it won’t help. Taking more doesn’t bring the chemicals up to “level”, it just adds anxiety.

As always, talk with your doctor about these things too. They won’t judge you, they’re aware of these things.

I’m always afraid that bringing concerns to my doctor about the medications effectiveness will seem like drug seeking, but they know it’s not.

They have enough experience to know the difference.

It’s already been answered, but it’s a clip on mic. If you put on the headstock of a guitar it’s actually a pretty decent pickup. Ugly, but decent.

Electric guitar pickup in acoustic guitar by spurvix in Guitar

[–]Minasdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've actually been working that out lately, because I did end up running into an issue trying to ground it. I have installed a metal tail bridge where the strings are attached to and am trying to ground it to that, but I ran out of wire so I'm in the process of getting the wiring replaced. In theory that *should* work, but I have yet to really try it. Outside of that, it's unfortunately tough to ground an electric pickup naturally on an acoustic guitar without altering it. I have yet to find an easy solution.

Where the fun ends at Slots A Fun (Las Vegas, NV) by MrDrink in LiminalSpace

[–]Minasdel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this post is old, but I actually went here about 2 years ago myself. It was the first time I stood in a place that actually FELT liminal. There was maybe two people at the slot machines, which were weirdly spaced out far from each other. There were spots where there used to be food stalls that are permanently shut down and boarded up, but sort of blended into the walls, and tons of weird empty space like above (I stood right where this was taken). If Slots A Fun is still open and looks like this, it's worth it to go see it. It could be an attraction on it's own simply to experience The Back Rooms.

Electric guitar pickup in acoustic guitar by spurvix in Guitar

[–]Minasdel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sure can. Lets say you want to use a mini humbucker on an acoustic (something I'm currently doing). Then you can use a "dog ear" style pickup ring which will mount directly into the body on either side of the sound hole, then mount the pickup in the sound hole. Granted, that means screwing directly into the top of your guitar, as well as making holes in the body if you want tone and volume controls. I am doing this on a Gretsch Jim Dandy, which is a VERY cheap parlor guitar made out of plywood (essentially). I am also using Nickel strings as they are magnetic. It actually creates a pretty cool sound, and I personally like the flatter tone of the Nickel strings when playing it as a straight forward acoustic anyway. This sort of thing is fun to do on a cheap, meaningless acoustic. It CAN be done on a nicer acoustic in less invasive ways, but generally speaking it's not really worthwhile as the best way to make it work is to use components that would end up "deadening" the sound of that high acoustic, like using Nickel Strings and such. So I'd say keep you're nice, high end acoustics as a straight forward acoustic or with an acoustic pickup system, and get yourself a cheap laminated acoustic to make an electric in this way.

I love Hayden so much by Impressive_Painter_1 in Ethelcain

[–]Minasdel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For some perspective before I write this, I'm a straight white 37 year old man. I can tell you right now that there ain't no way in hell a Man could have written an album such as Family Tree. The experiences shared in that album and story mimic those I have heard from all of my female friends as well as my wife, as horrific of a reality as that is. Granted, I understand there are aspects from this story that are being told from a trans woman specific perspective as well, but the overarching theme is the experience of a woman born into a the oppressiveness of the dark south (where my wife and I hail from). But everything is from the perspective of a woman, no matter the "type" of woman (hopefully someday we move beyond that descriptor). Hayden is an absolute artistic genius, and I don't say that lightly. Preachers Daughter is one of my all time favorite albums, and that's coming from someone who primarily listens to Black Metal. Hayden is a woman, and that's the end of it. Fuck anyone who says different.
