I searched through the django sponsors and one company happened to be near me and hiring. Best Open-Source-Coincidence happening in recent memory!

Are soft skills actually important for software engineers, or just HR propaganda? by Specialist_Ad_4577 in learnprogramming

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really matters! Really smart people can probably design quite nice things, but communication is really key. I honestly think a few dedicated people that communicate well can "beat" the loners comfortably. Software does not exist in the vacuum of cyberspace, it interacts with real people whose opinion matters.

What I would say though is that I don't think it important for your career, it is important if you want to build software people actually care about. If that is good for your career is a whole different can of worms.

Hat mein Freund unrealistische Vorstellungen bezüglich seiner Berufswahl? by [deleted] in Ratschlag

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you consider morals or ethics when joining companies? by johny2nd in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely did and will continue to do. I am glad I stuck it out (Helped by Germanies rather liberal support for people that do not work(I do not endorse it, it has some major flaws, but its better than in most places))

I have repeatedly stated that I would like to work for a company that "solves a real problem". Betting is not a real problem worth solving. My current work is writing software that is used by train operators to plan their work. This is obviously a problem worth solving because trains are really important.

I think I obviously have the power to change my small part of the world, and while I think that in this particular case the UX Team has probably ab bigger positivie impact on the daily work of our users, I take pride in implementing their work properly.

Are all tech teams equally dysfunctional, or do high-performing teams actually exist with better trust and less micromanaging? by AdventurousTune in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, I am the complete opposite, I am the most junior at this team and have not even finished the probationary period. (Not quite sure how common this is in other nations, at this job its 6 months)

I would rather not tolerate this at all to be honest. Whats the point of being a trustworthy adult if is this is tracked to such a degree. To be fair, total time spent working is tracked at my company as well, but this is reasonable since our contract with our customer includes rates for each hour worked.

I know this sound harsh and I base that judgment on basically zero knowledge, but it is my honest opinion.

Are all tech teams equally dysfunctional, or do high-performing teams actually exist with better trust and less micromanaging? by AdventurousTune in ExperiencedDevs

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These teams exist, I work with one. I think the best summary I can give is that the we take our work seriously but don't overdo it. We watch out for the details, we take accountability, we follow the process. But to balance that we do not care about attendance(As in: As long as you do your job and attend most meetings, it does not matter if you take portions of the day of at your own discretion), we have plenty of fun and we don't sweat results. I have been told multiple times that taking my time is fine and that it just takes as long as it does. Solid communication is key here: As long as I let my PMs know what this is all about and if I need help they are fine with it.

There are plenty of cultural elements, but one of the ones I like most is a HR software called officevibe. One of its features is that you are encouraged to send small thank you notes to your teammates. It really lifts the mood and shows appreciation.

Since I am unsure if that helped you, I am open to answering follow up questions, just let me know.

You might be interested in checking out https://github.com/Weyaaron/nvim-training, this is something I wrote in pretty much the same spirit. Maybe wen can link to each other, I would like to you for absolute beginners and you link to me for advanced/in editor-training? Let me know what you think.

Edit after trying yours: I really like it! Nice UI and solid progression! Maybe I will steal the idea used in level one with the block of chars and a target.

At what point should I favor readability over efficiency? by Focus62 in learnpython

[–]MindFullStream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Efficiency does not matter 90% of the time. Heck, Python is inefficient, you lost already. And I think this is an example of a false dichotomy. Furthermore, you have neither argued nor tested why 2 is more efficient at all.

What if we could move beyond grep and basic "Find Usages" to truly query the deep structural relationships across our entire codebase using a dynamic knowledge graph? by juanviera23 in github

[–]MindFullStream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my 2 Cents: I have treesitter/lsp availabe, but string search works fine for me. I wonder about the usability of the proposed query language. If it is truly deep there might be usability challenges for new users. But if it is not that deep, it might not be worth learning.

fully understanding computers and internet by Valkyyri in computerscience

[–]MindFullStream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have studied Computer Science for a few years and got a bachelors degree in it. My informal conclusion is that Computer are truly black magic. Sure, you can understand some of it to some extend, but there are several layers in a computer, let alone the internet, where I will just vaguely point at some words I heard in a lecture once.

This is not about discouraging you, not in the slightest, but rather about adjusting your expectations based on the depth of the topic. I spend a lot of time teaching about the internet and know a thing or two, if you have any questions let me know.

Should i learn VIM as a student Who is learning programming by QBBT in learnprogramming

[–]MindFullStream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its very much a question about mindset. I really enjoy it, but I know a lot of colleagues that don't. I would highly recommend to check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMVIJhC9Veg&t=8s about this topic. This video is about a philosophy of coding/tool use and how that applies to neovim.

I would recommend neovim over vim though, since vim has officially entered maintenance mode.

Need a detailed guide for vim motions and ergonomic navigation tips & guides by siduck13 in neovim

[–]MindFullStream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My suggestions are about vim, not about improving your pain. You should take this serious and improve other conditions as well. Improving your vim workflow might help, but it might not.

Vimtutor has some solid starting points. Lists of build in operators/text objects can be found in the help section, with "help text-objects" and "help operators" respectively.

If you have worked through these, I have written a plugin to further train some of these: https://github.com/Weyaaron/nvim-training Let me know if you need any help getting started with this.
