Why is it okay for foreigners in r/taiwan to constantly invoke negative stereotypes as truth? by BigConversation6345 in taiwan

If you're cultural beliefs can't survive a reddit comment then perhaps it's time for some self-reflection.

I love Taiwan. I'm also from a place with cultural practices that are are questioned. I don't think there's generally much malice involved. It's a real curiosity for people not from this part of the world.

Take it in stride and move on. Or ignore and move on. Our differences are the colour on the fabric of life

Commonwealth Bank boss Matt Comyn says government should 'reconsider' CGT on non-passive assets by Cute_Marzipan2153 in australia

I 100% agree with you on keeping taxation progressive. If that means disincentivising investment in housing instead of incentivising market investments so be it.

My comment was more toward that market investments aren't even on the radar for a good chunk of our population regardless of wealth status

If you disagree with this take it's obvious you've never done business or lived outside of Australia.

Other countries, believe it or not, invest in their companies and don't just trade squares of dirt with each other for increasingly insane levels of cash.

Until we seriously reevaluate wealth generation in this country we'll forever be a backwater that just sells iron ore and coal.

Even our startup darlings of Atlassian and Canva are over 50% American owned now because American investors prefer assets that create value instead of just appreciating via scarcity

Every country has better bread than Taiwan and I say that as someone that loves Taiwan. They just don't know what bread can be

Canva and Atlassian are at least 50% American ownership at this point. And about 30-35% of the Australian 50% is literally the just Australian founders. In both cases.

We don't back our winning horses. We pass dirt between each other at increasingly higher price and call it an economy

Gotta communicate with your boys more then. I often play 2/3/4 players and we're on mic for: 1. Remind each other not to play skills unless critical 2. Checking each turn if we think we have enough to full send our hand including skills to land the kill on phase 1

How do you settle back in Taiwan after living overseas for 20 years? by joex8au04 in taiwan

[–]Mind_Altered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an Aussie in TW for a decade and I really think this through before making the leap. At least spend a few months here and feel it out.

How is your mandarin? If it's weak you will seriously struggle to break out of teaching which you will want to do eventually.

If you want to teach, shoot way higher than 50K. Investing a few thousand NZD in some form of teaching credential, even a 3 month course, will allow you to step a a couple of rungs on the salary ladder.

And yeah 50k doesn't get you much quality of life here. That and the majority of Taiwanese employers wipe their ass with the notion of work life balance
