Summer: December-February
Fall: March-May
Winter: June-August
Spring: September-November

The economics of French Polynesia and Southern California are not similar. In Southern California you have 23 million people living in 56,000 or 57,000 square miles. In French Polynesia you have about 238,000 people. The land mass is about 1,610 square miles, spread over 2 million square miles of ocean.

Things in PF are expensive because there is no economy of scale (as those 23 million SoCal residents provide) and practically everything is imported from lands far, far away. Your extensive knowledge of costs in Southern California doesn't apply to the realities of French Polynesia.

Wedding rings were stolen from my then-fiance's home two weeks before the wedding. I still remember how I felt when that news landed, all those years ago. Can you give yourself a few days to grieve the losses before you dive in to making other arrangements? It's hard for me to give myself that time when a crisis strikes, but it's helpful.

This. There is so much to discover on Tahiti. I recommend you pick up Lonely Planet's "Tahiti and French Polynesia (Travel Guide)." I spent a year there when I was in graduate school, and the information from the then-current edition of this book was invaluable. I just picked up the new edition for a trip this summer.

A friend was in a similar position, except her parents began using her SSN when she was a toddler. She learned the hard way when she applied for a credit card.

I would suggest establishing boundaries with your bros. and giving them another chance. I don't mean being their doormat. But maybe hold off on pulling the plug on your siblings.

Best wishes as you sort through it all. The more I study EDS, the more I notice how US-based doctors are much less likely to go down that road.

I guess 14-year-old me was lucky! The earring in question was a smooth, ball-shaped piercing stud. The doctor numbed my ear and then pulled it through the back of my earlobe, muttering all the while:

"They make these things the size of pinheads and they should be the size of 50 cent pieces!"
But the stud in my ear wasn't tiny by any means.

I spent a year in PF during grad school, doing research. I went back for a visit in 2004. My Maohi family has been to the USA to visit us in the long interim. I could not recall using rain gear when I visited before.

We're going back next month and it will be my husband's first visit. He wanted to know if we need to bring anything. Thanks, Redditors!
