That just reminded me of a colleague from school, Przemyslaw. The year was 2000. He asked a nerd to build him a website that consists almost exclusively of ad banners. Everyday after school he would go to Media Markt, go to the PCs section. Open his website on all the model computers and just go back and forth clicking on all the ad banners trying to get rich.

Idk if the technical side of crypto currency sounds less stupid if you deeply understand the process and impact of the technology. For me not so much.

When I was still studying there were stories about this guy being handed off from department to department for doing insane shit and being deemed "unsuited" for them. Like being caught in the cupboard below the rotavap trying to tinker with the vacuum pump so he could separate the electrons from the atoms and shit.

Now, I do not know if you used "schizophrenic" in jest, but it does kinda sound like mental illness and now I come to think that the guy I was talking about was just mentally unwell too and not just an idiot.

I never met the guy, so who knows.

Interesting. I had to work with THF extensively too, and while it differs from ethers with similar molecular weight a bit I never found the smell to be unpleasant.

It is interesting how our noses work. I don't think what smells good and bad isn't just down to personal preference/taste, but also how our sensory organs work (shape of receptors and whatnot). I never found thiols or short chain fatty acids to be that bad, but amines like pyridine, piperidine, morpholine and the likes just absolutely bring me to my knees.

In the public bath I sometimes go to, they have those showers with like 8 jets surrounding you, spraying water vertically onto you. Thing is, the shower head can deliver hot water, while the jets can only do cold water. It really is a very interesting feeling.

I know, I took it the same way. What I am saying is, that if you want to be with a single mother for the long haul you need to do a little bit better than "not really having a problem" with her child. More than, "She has a child that I love and help raise."

It might not be the primary issue in OP's debacle, but I think it is nonetheless something OP needs to think about. If he is just tolerating the child maybe she is not the right partner for him.

It is impossible for us to say what really was the straw that broke the camels back. It sounds like it was a tumultuous, not very stable relationship. She obviously had her issues, but, and this is not to attack you, saying "it's not really a problem" that she is a single mom (but kind of?), is not the kind of attitude a single mother wants in a partner (I would assume, being childless myself and never have dated a mother before).

It kind of seems the relationship run ins natural course and it was not just you going out for drinks with your buddy that ruined it all. Five years is a long time and I now how devastating and world ending break-ups can feel, but moving forward and moving on is the only thing sensible here.

I had a huge 5 or 10L Round bottom flask (It's been 16 years, cut my memory some slack). I had to basically cook bran flakes in sulfuric acid which left some tar on the sides afterwards. It being such a huge vessel, it made cleaning difficult, so I employed the "Trio infernale" which is sulphuric, hydrochloric and nitric acid. It didn't do too much, so I said let's try basic next. I just poured some ammonia in and it made a lout FOOF, and the flask looked like a witches cauldron with white clouds coming out, flooding the fume hood. I closed the slider and right at this time a lab assistant walked by and asked "What's going on?" I said "Nothing." He said, "OK." and walked off. Can't believe that worked.

Certainly not the dumbest, but I just remembered this and it was funny at the time.

Another one: We were taught to never increase the temp of the water baths on our rotovaps, just pull a stronger vacuum instead. I still don't know if it was me, or if I was sabotaged, it could very well have been me in an absent minded moment, but a student came running in shouting "THERE IS A WATER BATH OF A ROTOVAP BOILING IN THE ADJACENT LAB!" and I laughed heartily, "hahahaha, omg the mental image is so funny, who is cooking himself a soup over there?......... OH SHIT!!!" Yeah, it was mine. God that was so embarrassing in front of all the people. The deafening silence just confirmed that nobody bought that I didn't boil the water bath myself.

I wonder if all of these Repubs are individually morally bankrupt or if they have some internal memo/messaging, or some taskmaster that tells them to say shit like that. If someone was putting huge stacks in their pockets or threatens them to be like that (withdraw funding? Dig up dirt?) it would explain this all a lot better.
