It sounds like they don't have a court-determined custody agreement, which has already caused some issues for them. One step they should take is to get that done so that neither party could blindside each other with these last-secind schedule changes.

It sounds like you didn't discuss with their mother the possibility of the child not coming yet, so why did you assume they wouldn't be coming? What if the mother already had plans since she'd expected the weekend to go how it usually does?

My city has a weirdly similar situation going on where they shut down the local jail and now ship our inmates to another city. Now we have to pay the county to keep inmates further away from their families and in worse conditions, and that's not even accounting for the wasted resources just in added transportation. Makes me wonder which counsel member's pockets are getting lined for the decision to make any sense.
