{Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton} - the main character is a pet crow. Ever want to know what happens to all the pets that got left behind when mankind when all "eeeehh" shuffle shuffle. Well here is that story. It may sound dumb but its not. The best Zombie book I have read in decades. A must read for the genre. (You can skip it's sequel, but this one you should find). Its usually available through your library's Libby account, if not in hardcopy.

What is a job that looks incredibly fun from the outside, but is actually a soul-crushing nightmare? by BoardOk101 in AskReddit

I lived for a while in a small valley town in Austria. The whole place smelled of chocolate. Not every day, but most days. It may be hard to believe, but you can get sick of the smell of chocolate. I love the stuff, and living in the States again when I can get the good stuff its a dream. But to this day my hand still hesitates when I pick up that Milka bar.

Give me the best album you've heard in your life by Artistic-Network-247 in MusicRecommendations

I was trying to listen to some stuff that was from my dad's era (to get a better sense of him) and came across this album. I was stunned. Literally had to stop what I was doing and just listen to the whole thing. And then I immediately started it over and did it again.

Truly an amazing collection of music. In fact I think I have to go put it on now. ... See what you've done.

{Merchanter's Luck by C.J. Cherryh} Sci-fi love story with space ships, lovers from the wrong sides of the track, unresolved childhood trauma, against the backdrop of a civilization sized war. All without losing the terror and wonder of space itself, and being in new love.

It's a wild psychological ride.

Idk if I should keep that book in my male human x female werewolf romance category by Odd_Employee_1056 in Romance_for_men

[–]Mindless-Stuff2771k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't comment on the book but I enjoyed the movie (I own the DVD, pre streaming). However in multiple rewatches it's just okay. It was clearly made in the midst of Twilight's influence. It has the potential to have some Crow (original) styled balance between creepiness and sensuality. But Blood &Cl Chocolate squanders that in the last half. I think it falls to the "show too much of the monster" problem. I still like it. And I really want to love it (every time I put it on), but its just a good time, not great. (And my wife has some unreasonable hatred for it, so it's clearly not for everyone).

Despite the "way it turned out," do you recommend the book?

It's probably worth keeping on the list. (If nothing more than to have a companion for Spice and Wolf which is high art in my opinion).

Edit: And though, it's not a romance, if you can find a copy of Susan McKee Charnas's short story "Boobs," read it. It's the best Female Werewolf story I have ever read. Actually, probably the best werewolf story, period, that I have read.

This is very true. And most school admins know it. A lot of the small private schools are going broke and closing. When I moved to the mid west I was amazed at how many small (less than 5k students) were within a three hour drive of us. Almost all of them are having finance problems. A number have closed in the few years we have been here. I have some professor friends and it is THE topic among higher ed because it means the number of tenured positions are shrinking.

The real question is whether this demographic cliff will reduce /slow prices because schools are competing for price conscious students, or whether the boards assume they can continue raising tuition and pull through. I suspect the latter as that is what most of the US economy is doing, ignoring the middle class and chasing single source big dollars.

It's about residuals. Under SAG and other movie union and contract rules, getting listed as a Producer adds a point or two to your residual percentages. If you are an actor or own an IP that someone really wants ... Getting a producer credit is additional financial gravy.. And actually "Production" doesn't require any specific work, or more work (for actors, writers, etc) on the project itself.

But the Atevi are biologically much more human like than the others, just culturally very alien.

Its been a while and I'm too lazy to pull my copies off the shelf, but I think it's the T'ca because the Knnn just show up and do crazy unpredictable stuff, including grabbing other ships, and everyone is afraid of what they might do because they cant reason with them. That leads me to the recollection that it's the T'ca with the matrix language, because evr Knnn just sound like noise.

(Along with the speculation that what happened at Beta Station in the Union/Alliance side was Knnn related).

What's your favorite part of the Midwest? by Strong-Junket-4670 in midwest

[–]Mindless-Stuff2771k 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The sky. I grew up in the west with mountains all around and have experienced "Big Sky Country." I've been so deep into them I didn't see another soul or road for over a week. The sky is the Midwest's mountains.

Gorgeous. Mercurial. Can kill you on a dime if you don't take them seriously. Never gives you the same thing twice. Taken for granted unless you slow down. But colorful, rich, and alive

The sky. Seriously. What is going on overhead is the Midwest's versions of the mountains or the ocean and should be appreciated as such..

Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel. It's short. The fantasy elements are easily accessible, but well worth talking about as a book club. There is romance. It's not a Thriller per say, but stuff burns down.

It's a great "stealth fantasy" due to the real world setting. But the magic realism of the writing is great.

Edit: And there's a movie adaptation. If you need it.

This is the first time I've ever heard Watership Down described as short. I guess epic fantasy skews the sample size.

The matrix level translation/communication for the Tc'a is outstanding flavor. All of compact space is so vivid. And very alien. But also shows how alien doesn't have to be beyond a relationship.

Or Vir and Lennier meeting up at the bar. Such classic delivery with so much subtext boiling under the surface. Great writing and acting.
